I love that theses women are treated like people before they're treated like lesbians. LGBT romance is so often treated like a spectacle, especially between women, so it's wonderful to see a movie like this where the female leads are never presented as anything but people.

THE END WAS BEAUTIFUL, YET TRAGIC. Hearing an orchestra was something that Héloïse longed to hear. It was perhaps even something worth being married for. Now she finally gets to experience it - with the implication, like the painting, that she is now a married woman, whether it's to the Italian or someone else - but that brings its own complex set of emotions. In one sense, Héloïse has something that she wanted; she's happy. But hearing the music - specifically, this music - cannot help but call to mind the memory of what she lost in order to gain it; namely, Marianne. It's fitting that the piece itself is about a perfect summer's day being interrupted by a storm, though it'd also be fair to question which is which in Héloïse's case: is the invading memory of Marianne the storm, or is that the summer's day, being crushed by the reality of life without her?
she didnt see her.. but we all know how much Héloïse felt on that time when ochestra started to play.. Shes thinking of Marianne.. Héloïse kept her in her heart.. and i think in time, they will meet each other again..
that shot of Heloise’s hood falling to reveal the back of her hair and the subsequent reveal of her face as she turns are two of my favorite shots in the film. so striking and mysterious.
Never been so glad to have watched a movie. This movie lingers. I don't REGRET watching it, and will surely REMEMBER this art. My heart has been broken again.
I usually cry watching lovers not ending up together but this time I didn't, maybe because I was so mesmerized with how beautifully they portrayed love and emotions and also the fact that even though they are not together they will remember each other forever. I mean that's what the true love does, it never lets you forget🌺
You just don't cry because of the ending. You cry because it is such a beautiful film and no words could come out of your mouth after watching it. You are just there sitting, the credits rolling, in awe of what you just witnessed. It leaves you empty with a little butterflies in our stomach. It is that wonderful. And I'm still crying.
I just finished it tonight. It took me two nights, as I was afraid to finish it the first time. It took me a lot of pauses before finishing, I get overwhelmed at certain moments that I had to pause and cry. After finishing the movie, I know this is one of the films that is burned in my memory and will forever have a place in my life. Some are not fleeting. Thank you Celine Sciamma. Thank you, Adele Haenel and Noemie Merlant.
Two scenes that I really liked was when Heloise asked, "When do you know it's over?" Marianne replied, "At some point we stop."And the last 10 minutes of the movie. In my opinion, the last 10 minutes of this movie summed up the joy and pain of their beautiful love story.
Every frame of the movie was like a painting. The ASMR of each scene was music to my ears. Each spoken line was so poetic and romantic. The chemistry between the actresses was so good. And the ending! First time a movie left me so emotionally disturbed.
I mean so what? Anyone with the right equipment and editing can produce striking photography of nature..over-reliance on these static shots for effect tends to be something lacklustre film-makers do, who cannot make a cohesive moving whole. Film isn't about pretty pictures here and there. Few people understand it's more like music than painting. Too many 'gorgeous', 'colorful' shots can actually spoil a film, same way music with crescendo every few bars is not really musical. They're more what trailers are about than what cinema is about.
Saw this for the 1st time last night and then watched it again earlier today. This might be my best movie of 2019. It is captivating in terms of the visuals, the performance of the main actors, and the storyline. And yes, it is heartbreaking. But I don’t think the ending was sad. One must keep in mind that this was set in the 18th century (if i’m not mistaken), where a romance between two women was still unacceptable. One thing that I like about this movie is that it didn’t give us any of those tropes that is usually given to us in gay movies to make a good story. None of the main characters died. There was no cheating. Instead, the movie gave us a pure and incredible story of two women who found comfort and connection with one another within a short period of time. What would’ve been sad was if either one of them has forgotten. But they have not. Each of the characters vividly feels and remember one another, and the moments they spent together. And that, to me, is enough.
Please someone tell me how to watch this.. please. Anyplace I find that plays it is too far away. Im not from a place that really celebrates movies like this. its hard to find here..,
I think the movie, "Water lillies" was way sadder but this film is pure GOLD, I don't really understand literature much, but I regret I didn't when I had the chance
i watched this last night as a part of a film festival here in the Philippines and it was absolutely gorgeous!!!!!! the emotions felt absolutely raw and powerful. i'm never going to forget this film.

@@ailaabellanosa8949 Yeah, I checked it out on google. Too bad I missed it! Keeping my fingers crossed that Cinema 76 or Cine Adarna would pick it up. Thanks for all the help. Anyway, thanks for the recommendation. 👌 Let's keep our fingers crossed that they'd screen it to malls and local theatres. 🙂
the oscars aren't even in this film's league. these women are true artists who are far too good to compete with hollywood amateurs. amateurs who are too afraid to applaud this film because then they'd have to admit that a female produced, written, directed, dp'd film about lesbians is better than their mediocre american films made by white dudes. honestly the entire best picture category (other than parasite) look like child's paintings in comparison to this. #sorrynotsorry
Mmm Best Actress (Adele Haenel), Best Supporting Actress (Naomi Merlant), Best Director (Céline Sciamma), Best Cinematography and Best Foreign Language Film.
Barely saw this in the last day of Cannes at the last minute, literally right after “Parasite” in the same theater. It’s the second best one I saw out of 9 movies at Cannes. Since it was my 3rd film of the day, I was very tired, and didn’t know if I was going to make it through. It does have a slow pace, which may have seemed like it wouldn’t have complimented my tiredness. But due to many elements such as cinematography, direction, tight dialogue/story, and acting, I was surprised how much I got engaged with the film.
I do not mind at all, 1. Parasite 2. Portrait of a Lady on Fire 3. The Traitor 4. Les Misérables 5. Bacurau 6. A Hidden Life 7. Little Joe 8. Matthias and Maxime (in 35mm!) (3.5 out of 5) 9. Frankie (3.5 out of 5) Last two are still quite back and forth.
I've watched this movie more than a dozen times this week, especially Noémie's performance is so wonderful, from now on I will pay attention to all her films. I hope this quiet, shy woman will have more amazing works in the future.
Our french trailer is boring compared to the international one. That's why international people know this movie better than us, french people. But everyone need to know and watch this movie, this is a duty for all human beeings on this earth !! Merci à Céline Sciamma ♥
The most fantastic movie I've seen in a long while. So beautiful and touching. Hats off to the extraordinarily talented actresses and actors in this film! A thing of beauty
Beautiful movie. Everyone can detonate a building and unleash aliens, but the true art lies in making the audience feel and being so courageous not to rub it in their face, but to rely on subtle moments and masterful acting.

I am at awe with this film that is making me feel like falling in love...! I can only compare it with two other masterpieces Carol and The Handmaiden
Agree!! Carol and Handmaiden are my favorite lesbian movies ever... and then this gorgeous masterpiece! Argh! Really, my top 3 and all of them hard to beat. Superb films, each one on their own way.
Got to see this at a local film festival yesterday and I can’t stop thinking about it. Easily one of the best film I’ve seen recently. I had high hopes going in, and honestly the film did not disappoint. Can’t wait to see it again.

Jesus, it’s been a year since I first saw this film and even till this day I’m still in awe. It’s one of the very best showcase of screen storytelling and film as a language, mesmerizing in every freaking way. It’s definitely the best film from Céline Sciamma.
Me too but Neon put all their money and energy into Parasite. They token released Portrait in December so that it can at lease get qualified but I don't think the Academy is at fault when the US distributor doesn't do much to promote the film.
The Academy ignores most of the best films. Them ignoring it is more evidence of this film's brilliance. Don't get me wrong, I hope they change to be inclusive of and to reward more quality films - but don't hold your breath.
I've seen the movie, but I still click to watch the trailer. And yeah, been binge watching red carpets and interviews with these two. It's THAT unforgettable this movie is.
I finally got to watch this film. I have no words. A cinematic masterpiece. The visuals, the acting, everything was just perfect. I will never forget this movie.
Love this movie. I knew nothing at first (someone recommend this movie to me) and after watching it, this literally change my life. Superb acting, superb lines. Superb directing. SUPERB BAGUETTE😥😥😥😥😄😄😄😄😥😥😥
I watched this twice and became so mesmerized with the two actress, as they fell in love for little time but stays with them forever, this movie is next to The Handmaiden, I love.
Finally watched it because it's on netflix in the Netherlands now. This is one of the most beautiful films I have ever seen and visually it is the most beautiful I have ever seen.
Using Vivaldi's Summer in this film was absolutely everything. It could not have been subtle. What she felt watching the orchestra play remembering, could not have been subtle. It had to be felt. What a lovely film.
Masterpiece..... she chooses the memory of her. She doesn't make the lovers choice, but the poets. One of the best love story movie ever. Its been up to 2 years and I'm still heart broken. Watched many love story movies after this no one can take it's place..
@@Nature_Mixture Yes, but still they're not together. and the ending scene in which she listens the piano, and then starts crying. the ending scene lets us see Héloïse through Marianne's eyes with Héloïse's defenses fully down. The raw feelings Héloïse kept bottled, at bay, just out of Marianne's reach during their portrait sessions as young women is let out in this last shot. And it happens because Héloïse is listening to a song which, it would seem, reminds her of the woman she still loves in some way.
@@Fusions101 If they both made the lover's choice, that's mean their love is possible. you didn't see they meet on screen, it's not mean that didn't happen in theirs own continue stories. Marianne could go say hi after the concert or Héloïse eyes caught Marianne at the end, but that would be just poet's choice all over again.... Well...it's just my interpretation, it's bittersweet and perfect the way it is, make you felt the film even more. you also right, cos the film has many layers.
Fun to see that the trailer for US market just shows they are going to have a love story when the french trailer is way more subtle about it. No need to guess here.
This movie is so good it's hard to believe it's only a couple of years old. It's very old fashioned in its narrative structure. Classical cinema reborn.
Saw it last night at The Landmark both protagonists were there + the director Celine. Loved the film, the acting, costume design, the little use of music, the script, the use od color, everything. Great chemistry on screen too.

Deeply attached to it. How can I even move on? Tell me. This movie captivates the innermost sense of love. Not because a relationship has ended, meaning it's over. I just came from the cinema after watching this. Wow! What a piece of art. I absolutely loved it. The connection between them was captured in such a beautiful and refreshing way.
One of the finest movies made in recent years. It's a beautiful story, with great photography and great actors. Not sending this movie to the Academy Awards was a great mistake.
In those several films I had watched that included a romance between two women,Carol and this spectacular movie was the solely the both that made me feel something ethereal and couldn't move on how beautifully those movies were written.
This movie is mesmerizing, for a lack of a better word. The themes are one centerpiece for discussion; the other would be the superb acting and chemistry between Adèle Haenel and the beautiful Noémie Merlant. 5 stars. A must see. On a personal note, it is excruciatingly painful to make the lover's choice but in keeping true to the film, I now understand that you must always remember and never regret.
I can not thank you enough for this comment, esp the last sentiment tying into Vivaldi's Storm.
Also, do you write for Screenrant?
she didnt see her.. but we all know how much Héloïse felt on that time when ochestra started to play.. Shes thinking of Marianne.. Héloïse kept her in her heart.. and i think in time, they will meet each other again..
Yuzu Mei i'd argue she knew she was there but didn't dare look as she was making the lovers choice
I think Héloïse knew Marianne was there. She chose not to look at her. It would be too painful
Just write Spoilers ahead please so others who haven't watched the movie won't fall for it please
@@mudbucket1354 i guess you are right.. coz they are both aware thats Marianne's favorite orchestra piece..
I have chose to believe that they met in the lobby and lived happily ever after. No other belief would let me sleep at night.
that shot of Heloise’s hood falling to reveal the back of her hair and the subsequent reveal of her face as she turns are two of my favorite shots in the film. so striking and mysterious.
Never been so glad to have watched a movie.
This movie lingers. I don't REGRET watching it, and will surely REMEMBER this art.
My heart has been broken again.
I like what you did there
I usually cry watching lovers not ending up together but this time I didn't, maybe because I was so mesmerized with how beautifully they portrayed love and emotions and also the fact that even though they are not together they will remember each other forever.
I watched this at TIFF and I cannot get it out of my head. It is an absolute masterpiece!!

Basically by reading your cmt i realised we are movie twins ...same process
"Page 28" and "Turn around" made me cry😭
I cried watching the trailer. This movie is insane. It changed me forever.
EASILY one of the best movies of the last few decades. An astonishing achievement. Practically flawless.
Two scenes that I really liked was when Heloise asked, "When do you know it's over?"
Marianne replied, "At some point we stop."And the last 10 minutes of the movie. In my opinion, the last 10 minutes of this movie summed up the joy and pain of their beautiful love story.
Iam not lying when i said this is one of the best movie ever...
Even after 50 years, this movie still will stay as legendary!!
Every frame of the movie was like a painting. The ASMR of each scene was music to my ears. Each spoken line was so poetic and romantic. The chemistry between the actresses was so good. And the ending! First time a movie left me so emotionally disturbed.
I saw this movie almost a month ago. To hear the singing again in this trailer was enough to make me tear up. It is truly magnificent!
the colors at 1:33 are absolutely GORGEOUS!!!! THIS MOVIE LOOKS SO COOL!!!!!
princessthyemis omg i thought the same
I mean so what? Anyone with the right equipment and editing can produce striking photography of nature..over-reliance on these static shots for effect tends to be something lacklustre film-makers do, who cannot make a cohesive moving whole. Film isn't about pretty pictures here and there. Few people understand it's more like music than painting. Too many 'gorgeous', 'colorful' shots can actually spoil a film, same way music with crescendo every few bars is not really musical. They're more what trailers are about than what cinema is about.
@@helvete_ingres4717 I get that. But still, dude!

@Tooty Futts thanks babe
Im not from a place that really celebrates movies like this. its hard to find here..,
Hulu
I think the movie, "Water lillies" was way sadder but this film is pure GOLD, I don't really understand literature much, but I regret I didn't when I had the chance
i watched this last night as a part of a film festival here in the Philippines and it was absolutely gorgeous!!!!!! the emotions felt absolutely raw and powerful. i'm never going to forget this film.
Hey, can I ask where did you watch this? I'm really curious. Thanks!!
レスリ Hello! I watched it in Trinoma. The film was part of the World Cinema segment of the Cinema One Originals Film Festival. Unfortunately the festival already ended yesterday, though I hope other local theatres could take the chance to show the film. :)
@@ailaabellanosa8949 Yeah, I checked it out on google. Too bad I missed it! Keeping my fingers crossed that Cinema 76 or Cine Adarna would pick it up. Thanks for all the help. I've been hearing good reviews about it. Some say it's way better than Parasite and Midsommar. Sorry for the rambling, haha. Thanks! :D
レスリ It is good!! Can’t compare it to the other two films since the genres are vastly different, but it is definitely a must-watch! Hope Cinema 76 and Cinema Centenario indeed pick it up, I want to see it for a second time.
@@ailaabellanosa8949 Yeah, idk why my friends are comparing it to the 2 films. From watching the trailer, I can see the that this film is way too different than Midsommar and Parasite. This movie could’ve easily taken at least 5 Oscars. What was France thinking !!??? ABSOLUTE MASTERPIECE, best Film of 2019
the oscars aren't even in this film's league. these women are true artists who are far too good to compete with hollywood amateurs. amateurs who are too afraid to applaud this film because then they'd have to admit that a female produced, written, directed, dp'd film about lesbians is better than their mediocre american films made by white dudes. honestly the entire best picture category (other than parasite) look like child's paintings in comparison to this. #sorrynotsorry

If you don't mind me asking, what's the ranking of the films that you saw at Cannes?
I do not mind at all,
1. Parasite
2. Portrait of a Lady on Fire
3. The Traitor
4. Les Misérables
5. Bacurau
6. A Hidden Life
7. Little Joe
8. Matthias and Maxime (in 35mm!) (3.5 out of 5)
9. Frankie (3.5 out of 5)
Last two are still quite back and forth.
So.. It is gonna be worth it? To watch I mean?
Aphyrius After seeing it, I definitely think so.

Best romance film I have ever seen. It is a beautiful and tragic piece of art, and quite possibly one of the best films of this century so far.
This movie is like a beautiful painting. I couldn’t look away.

Jesus, it’s been a year since I first saw this film and even till this day I’m still in awe. It’s one of the very best showcase of screen storytelling and film as a language, mesmerizing in every freaking way. It’s definitely the best film from Céline Sciamma.
This film is one of the rare pinnacles of aesthetic power and humane civilization. Brava!
The fact the academy ignored this film entirely really bothers me.
Fred T yeah that’s what I was aiming for
Me too but Neon put all their money and energy into Parasite. They token released Portrait in December so that it can at lease get qualified but I don't think the Academy is at fault when the US distributor doesn't do much to promote the film.
Reece Devine It bothers me too !!!!!!
The Academy ignores most of the best films. Them ignoring it is more evidence of this film's brilliance. Don't get me wrong, I hope they change to be inclusive of and to reward more quality films - but don't hold your breath.

“Don’t regret. Remember!” I love the way 2 actresses was treated together. How wonderful act and the portraits
Masterpiece..... she chooses the memory of her. She doesn't make the lovers choice, but the poets.
One of the best love story movie ever. Its been up to 2 years and I'm still heart broken. Watched many love story movies after this no one can take it's place..
But in the third ending they both made the lover's choice, though.
