I used to do a lot of stuff like this, but I find I don't play the games once I make these...so I'm back to just buying a game, because something about sticking a game in a console makes me more dedicated to playing it.

Between buying all digital on the Switch, my Steam library, retropies, arcade1ups and everdrives... yeah I have nothing to play.

@@RedCowEntertainment yeah same kind of way I feel about digital games which I do buy from time to time, but physical just makes me appreciate them more for some reason. I feel like my loaded pi is the gaming equivalent to doomsday prepping.

I do the same thing. Spent hours setting up an old sound canvas to hear better MIDI from old PC games, got it working, marveled at how great it sounded and called it a day. How many games have I played through it since: 0.
I’d love to collect original games but it would just end up being another rabbit hole. My latest solution is to focus on the games themselves…analyze them, turn over every stone, etc. As a bonus this process creates a foundation you could build a decent review on.

This video inspired me to pull the trigger on a mini pc and Batocera. Couple hours later and I’m all set up! Thanks for sharing man.

This is very special, I bet he will treasure it forever. The printed box art was the icing on the cake, nothing got you excited for a new game than a good cover art.

That's pretty nice that you can change the icons to Nintendo style and swap A and B. Definitely makes the transition seamless.

Mini PCs are the future of gaming. I've seen videos of them getting great performance for PS4 games, it's absolutely incredible. With launch box, batocera and retro arch the emulators are ahead of the console makers. Imagine retro arch with Xbox 360 and switch emulation, it would be completely over.

i have to do this for my son! Hes turning 6 this year and i think some fun retro games that are easy to access will be perfect for him

This is amazing! For your son, you are the coolest dad ever! I did something similar for my boys as a present a few years ago (Home made Arcade machine & Raspberry pi 3b+). I bought the exact same mini pc in September 2022 to replace an older htpc as a media player and retro console in the living room. I use Windows with Launchbox - Bigbox frontend instead, it works well. Great video!

I intentionally purchased one of these because arcade punks came up with a 1tb batocera PC build on version 35 and just as your video explains it doesn't work. Took 5 days to download and 7 hours to unzip and 5 hours flash and luckily I came across this video before I introduced it to my 5 lb hammer lol. I hooked it up to one of my other computers and switched it to beta and now it's updating to 36. Thanks for the video and I subscribed!

How'd you get those roms, EJ? 😗
I think I need to snag one of these as both my Wii and Wii U are slowly dyin and the performance looks to be quite good. Awesome that you can connect a sensor bar to it as well and good to hear that there isn't any lag/positioning issues with it.
Also, lovin the green screen! Bimmy would be proud!

Hey EJ, now that you've had a bit more time and experience with it did you run into any more issues or has it been completely smooth? I want something that can do everything from Atari to Wii U but I have no experience with these mini PCs. I watched a video Digital Foundry did a while back about the Mister FPGA which does the hardware emulation and looks awesome but i'm not sure how it works with more modern systems like PS2 or Wii U. I like the idea of accurate emulation but honestly as long as it plays smooth enough without any major glitches or differences I probably wouldn't notice if something minor is off. The only thing is if I went the route you did with the mini PC i'm gonna need a much larger hard drive than 500 GB so i'd need to see what it can support storage wise. This is an amazing gift for your son though...the amount of thought and time you put into customizing it and getting it just right for him is genuinely admirable.

This is really cool. I don’t know much about configuring a pc to do this but I have owned a raspberry pi years back that had 1000s of games on it. I liked it but it was slow and some games just wouldn’t work. Is there a resource where I can learn step by step to make my own mini pc arcade ? If I have full instructions, I would love to build my own.

Hey Thanks for the informative video,
Is there any reason you used a usb dock for the ssd installation or is it possible to do once its already installed into the pc.

Nice video. Why are BIOS files needed, don't they mostly have them already in the emulators? I have a few on android and the only BIOS I've needed to use is for PS2, the rest already run fine without needing BIOS. However, PS2 is the limit for thd tablet I own.

    • @RedCowEntertainment

It’s worth a shot! These mini pcs can be tough because each of them can have a custom motherboard that would have to be added to future builds. You can always try trolling around the batocera forums to see if anybody has any insight
