This is a story of a mother lion and her 5 newborn cubs. At Maasai Mara National Reserve, Kenya. An elephant attacks the lion’s hideout. The mother puts her kids in her mouth and takes them out; however, one cub gets seriously injured.
And there is another injured cub. What is the mother going to do ?
This is a remake of the episode aired on Amazing Animals in May 2005.

She knew the cub was going to die, so she groomed him to comfort him, then she suffocated him until he peacefully passed away inside her mouth, then she ate him to protect the other Cubs from predators trying to eat the Cubs carcass.
She (gently) kills the cub to put him out of his misery, and then eats the cub. This (1) prevents arrival of other predators, (2) feeding helps the lion make milk so she can feed her other cubs. It's Nature at work.
3) Probably tastes good too.
She had to since it (remainings of the dead cub) leaves trail for predators. A lioness priority will always be against a weak or injured cub than endangering the majority cubs (especially when they can barely run or escape). Some lionesses leave their injured cub to die but I guess this situation had her mother instinct to focus on the living cubs' safety.
I heard they have this mourning phase or ritual by roaring but given the situation it is impossible. Instinct told her to erase the 'trail' that would lead to others. Although, I do agree that she went for the kill 'gently' since normally they're aggressive to their prey. This pretty much shows how her motherly instinct is overlapping between the injured and the remaining ones.
Interesting reality but also sad.
This nature is also applicable to us. We actually follow this rule as well but ours can be judged depending on the circumstances while theirs is more framed to one decision regardless whether they feel anything or not.

That's a nature instinct on cats. Even domestic wild cat often eat her death cub in order to not waste it as the food for scavengers, rats, etc. It is a normal for cats but not for human.

Just look at her eyes when she let her cub go inside her, tightly closed as though trying to contain all d mother's pain. After his death, its not her cub anymore, its just a lifeless body. So she chose to do wat was best for the living other cubs, eliminate d trail. Animals are far more wiser in their instincts than us humans in our brightest conscience.

Very well put! What a GREAT mother! They are so gentle picking up the Cubs in their mouth. It was almost natural selection as she only has 4 teats to feed 5 Cubs.
She HAD to eat her dying cub to protect the others & put it out of its misery rather than just leave it for predators or bring the predators to her and the remaining Cubs.
Lionesses are particularly patient, kind moms by keeping them away from the pride until they are older which put her and her babies at higher risk.
So sad yet incredible video at the same time.

Lives of wild animals are between life n death for every day and every meal. Lives of human is safest and getting easiest food in the world.

She only ate the cub because the smell would have attracted other predators who could kill her other cubs. The mother didn’t eat him to end his suffering! He was already dead.

Only then did she eat it, Had FURTHER predators and found its dead body, they'd have known there were probably other cubs in the area and those cubs, too, would become prey. I was once staying on a farm in the UK and one of the farm cats also ate her dead newborn kittens. Instinct, I suppose.

She was very gentle in suffocation of baby; not like brute force delivered t her preys young. lt weren't a decision taken lightly, im sure but collateral damage( that we as humans may not understand); essential f survival of rest of kids

That's the mother Lioness decision. Maybe better ment for other 3 Cubs. Even Lion kills Cubs, when they defeat any Lion of Pride. In many videos I have seen that Lioness ignore injured Cubs & stops feeding.
