    Regarding the dead cub...do You think it's possible it became sick? It didn't look super thin, so I'm not convinced it couldn't compete for milk. Plus, it's pretty common for lion cubs to compete for milk. Seems to take more than playful competition to kill baby cub.

    • @alexf9381
      @alexf9381 14 дней назад

      Sadly, no. It definitely staved to death. This mother lion was known for having issues with her mothering. She had another cub that died after she refused to allow it to suckle. This is how cubs look when they starve. People expect to see an ultra ultra skinny lion in this case but especially for cubs, they can starve to death while still not looking overly skinny. They become weak very easily if they don't eat and that's what happened here. It 100% died of starvation.

      She's not laying appropriately so the cubs can drink. She finally did later in the video. But the 3rd cub was starving and she was refusing to lay so it could drink. Only 2 nipples available (and barely) when she is sitting up like that. Yes, lionesses have 4 nipples; however, they are of no use if the lioness won't allow the cubs to drink.

    • @callyg54
      @callyg54 2 года назад +2

      I don't believe the fighting was solely about dominance...though the hungrier the cubs are, the more aggression there will be between them. But 3 cubs, 4 teets and another female with (2?) cubs, 8 teets, so not like there aren't enough to go round. Possibly a combination of circumstances contributed to the death of the cub. Lack of milk? Poor quality milk? Inexperienced mum? Illness?

      @@daysipaz8312 I stand corrected. I see some of the same comments from others below. Yep - she's an awful Mom. I wonder why though 🤷‍♀🤷‍♀?? Is it painful for her to nurse? She let out a loud growl as they were trying to feed.
      No more cubs for this lioness. That is all.

      @@auntiez4917 I'm wondering what is wrong with her... I've seen this happen to a cat of mine. Maybe it's like humans, some aren't good for mothering.

      @@daysipaz8312 Exactly this - some lionesses are just not good Mothers. These lionesses are very intelligent too. She knew that 3rd one was starving when she didn't make sure he could drink. Actually, all of the cubs are starving which is why they are being so aggressive while feeding. So the guide is wrong - competition is not what killed that cub. Starvation is. There are plenty of lionesses with 3 cubs who are able to sufficiently feed them. Hopefully, the other cubs hang on despite her non-existent parenting skills.
      She and the male look well fed so I don't think it's a matter of her not producing enough milk🤷‍♀🤷‍♀...

    I know there is competition but this isn't a common thing. Isn't this the pride eating a giraffe the other day? Unless there was something wrong with the cub?

    I don't understand why a mother would not feed its cub(s), unless the cub was sick?. Makes no sense from an evolutionary and survival perspective. How sad - normally cub videos fill me with joy - this one was the exception. Thanks for chronicling this all the same.

    How is not saving the weak one good for conservation?

    • @Iconoclast1919
      @Iconoclast1919 2 года назад

      Because they have to be strong enough to survive on their own and much later when/if they go out on their own. The humans aren't always there. Natural selection is the way of nature. Lions shun weakness so they would have to take the cub and raise it in a rehab facility.

    En principe , les mamans lionnes savent le nombre de cubs qu'elles ont , non ?

    I always feel that Lions natural aggression makes it so hard f humans t get near them t help( aswell as letting nature take its course).
    Unlike human parents, Mum lionesses ain't made t b interested in feeding 1 cub more than the others; its 1st come 1st served along with more dominate siblings regularly taking the best spots.
    Kinda shows the different between animal instinct an human consciousness where a ( loving- cos not all mums care bout their kids) human mum wud try an give as must individual care t all her babies if she had quads, trips or sextuplets etc ( she'd hav them weighed 2)unlike a lioness running on instinct an don't understand when 1 cub maybe constantly missing out on regular milk feeds.
    Mum lionesses don't have family kin or friends tell her that babies needs reg milk diet etc..

    That Lioness didn't want to feed all three. It was too hot to extend the energy for them. So she decided which ever ones that was feed should be thankful. Too hot Too tired Too lazy. Better luck next litter when she feel like raising cubs. Cats have attitudes outta this world.
