  • Is College a Waste of Money in 2024?
In 2024, for most people, college is considered a waste of money unless it leads to a specific job such as engineering, nursing, medicine, or law. General degrees like marketing, business, fine arts, or history often result in graduates struggling with substantial debt and low initial salaries. Practical work experience in fields like marketing and sales is seen as more valuable than a theoretical college education.
College may be worthwhile if one has strong connections or is pursuing a specific career that requires a degree. However, due to high unemployment, inflation, and a tough job market, alternatives like trade school are recommended. Trade programs, which last from six months to a year and a half, can lead to high-paying jobs in HVAC, plumbing, welding, and electrical work. Tradespeople often make over six figures and have opportunities to start their own businesses.
Additionally, online certifications, such as those offered by Google through Coursera, provide cost-effective education in areas like digital marketing and SEO, leading to well-paying jobs. Given the high cost of college and uncertain returns, exploring trade schools or online certification programs may be more beneficial for most people in 2024.
