Every time I see an S2k, I'm at awe at how it still looks modern and looks like something that was released maybe 4-5 years ago. The definition of a timeless design.
It's clearly 2000s, but definitely looks more late than early (ignoring the changes in Honda's design language). It's totally timeless in the sense it'll never look bad due to being outdated, though
@@bige7186 I'm too autistic about cars and I know design language through the decades way too well, but it is a good looking little car. I could maybe see it in Mazda's or Lexus's current lineup with a few changes and a few more lines. Really just needs a facelift, which is pretty good for a 25 year old car :)
As someone who daily's an NC Miata through Canadian winters, hell yes! I'd also like to add that there are actually some unexpected benefits to driving your small RWD sports car in the winter: 1) Fewer + smaller windows = less snow and ice to scrape off 2) Once the engine gets some heat, the HVAC has less cabin volume to warm up, so the interior gets toasty pretty quickly. 3) As silly as it looks, you have similar clearance to anyone else in a civic, corolla, etc, you just have to contend with RWD 4) The faces of people in their crossovers on all season tires who have poor braking and handling in inclement weather and think that you're crazy. 5) If you like sports cars, why deprive yourself of yours for several months at a time, get some winters and have some year round fun That being said, I probably wouldn't do this with a pristine S2000. If my Miata rots I can very easily find another one in good shape at a reasonable price. The same can't be said about S2000s that are essentially becoming collectors now.
Hell yeah, dude! I'm also dailying my NC through the winter, though we don't have it quite as rugged here in Central WA. I've been hating these Blizzaks on dry and wet, but since the snow started falling, they've been amazing. The drifting controllability on ice is just unbelievable. I've never driven any vehicle in any condition that has such a smooth break-away and recovery as this Miata does on ICE. It's like cheating.
i’ve been daily driving a mk1 mx5 here in the Scottish winter and it never fails to put a massive smile on my face, sideways pretty much everywhere but you learn so much at such low speeds so you’re never in any true danger. Great video sir looked a riot!
I live in southern Maine and I’ve been driving a second generation Lexus IS350 RWD year-round as my daily and can confirm snow tires are all ya need to get around in the snow. Drifting is phenomenal also
I dont even atempt to drive my 02 S2k w 50k miles if there is even a spot of ice on the road it goes sideways going straight and slightest touch of gas its not a good outcome being said i have Michelin sport cups on it so its a nightmare fun in a parking lot if not too deep i got stuck once and luckily someone saw me and helped me get unstuck
Topher! I live in Utah and deal with the same conditions. I highly recommend royal purple in the transmission and differential. Seemed to help my shifting in the cold weather before the car is warmed up. Cheers!
I just bought a set of xice snow for my outback wilderness. After the first couple hundred miles of break in with the tires, we got hit with snow here in MN, the confidence and traction it gives you is crazy good. I do a lot of driving up north to duluth from the twin cities so having these tires, I feel safe. Haven't been able to use any of the x modes but maybe later when we get more snow on the ground and I can head out to some forest roads :).
This is awesome. I lived in Indiana for about 7 years and daily drove my '01 S2000 year round. So this was a POV of my life lol I always ran Michelin Pilot Alpins though, not as good... Still excellent.
Great skills! Last time I drove a RWD car in snow is 15 years ago but did not have the skill of courage to drift it like that. Makes we wanna have a RDW car again to practice.❤
Last week I went into the mountains in my NC Miata on Blizzaks, and my friend brought his 3V Mustang on Hankook i-Cepts. We arrived on our favorite road just as a 14-inch snow dump and blizzard was getting started. We had quite possibly the best drive ever, practicing the art of no-countersteer drifting up and down the Carson touge. When you drive sideways, the cloud of snow blows sideways and the guy behind you can still see. The convoy of Jeeps were VERY surprised when they saw a couple sports cars street racing Initial-D style on that road. When the Miata started leaving tracks from the differential and control arms, we decided to break for home. Eventually it got to the point where I was pushing a bow wave of snow, and in certain parts it was coming over the hood and windshield as we clawed our way out of a canyon. We split up at Goldendale and made our separate ways back home. I will NEVER forget that drive.
I’ve already watched this three times, I just picked up an nd2 thanks to your videos, if I could get winter tires I’d love to be attempting something like this near me
I have the same exact setup on my 02 Ap1 w only 50k miles Hks high power single exit w 70mm Berk test pipe,Skunk2racing pro st coilovers and a AEM cai and Mugen 3 black suede steering wheel best car ever imo
Amazing I am hoping to make my video tomorrow on all season tires in the snow. And you right driving in it is sooo fun, and as for a beginner like me you learn so much about steering and throttle input.
Those tires are really impressive! Grip for days even in ice and snow like that! That's the difference between having an accident and being in control.
The s2k is amazing in snow thanks to 50/50 weight dist and RWD with some good snow tires. I used to laugh at AWD vehicles stuck. As long as u don't mind cleaning under carriage and plowing street w lip, it's a blast!
This looks fun as hell... first chance I get to slide my ap1 in the snow I'm doing it.. even if I need to bundle up with no windows and stripped interior. The heater core is legit.. I will be having FUN :D
Oh!Man!I can't wait to get one.I was shark how it perform in the snow. But I won't drive it in the winter if I own one. I am worry about the salt will affect the chassis.I want to keep it as long as I can.
Hey Topher you can look into karcepts str tune done with emanage. Basically it's a map designed work with aftermarket i, h, tp, e. Will lower vtec from 6500 to 4500 will gain about 10whp up top and 30 lb tq mid range. All in all its about $1k for emanage, tune, and wiring harness
Looks like fun. The one time every five years that it snows and sticks where I live there are literally no cars on the road, so that would be even better, however it's just not practical to own and install snow tires for this.
I'm upset that this car is so expensive on the used market. I'm not a fan of convertibles but I would LOVE to have an S2k. I wish it would make any business sense for Honda to bring this car back and maybe temper those used prices even a little. At least the Miata isn't as expensive (yet?)
Totally different road conditions from the other day in the brz. Much colder makes for more fun. I think the Falkens were studded and these Michelins not. Is that true ? Does this S2000 have traction control ? Both cars have Torsen lsd I believe....no clutches.
Yep, very different. I’ll also be uploading a BRZ video from the same day as this s2k drive. And you’re right, both torsen diffs. Falkens are studdable but not studded (can’t run studs in MI), and no traction control in the s2k!
Dedicated Winter tires are better than all-seasons on any vehicle during winter. (: (As well as summer tires are better than all-seasons on any vehicle during summer.)
Is rust proofing effective? I’m afraid the oil film will attract and trap dirt and grime and make the problem even worse. I’m thinking regular washes including the undercarriage would be preferable.
It’s very effective at keeping your car rust free. It’s not effective at keeping the underside clean. That said, dirt trapped w/the oil coating will act more as a barrier than a trap for moisture.
We have some touchless car washes locally that have an undercarriage wash. But with the coating you don’t want to do it too often. Like you said in the spring is ideal 👍
i typically love your videos. why would you drive like that in the neighborhood though? it's so irresponsible and dangerous. go to a skid pad or autocross to do that. they have those in the winter. controlled environment. you are safe and more importantly there are no innocent bystanders that can get hurt in an event that you will lose control.
High revving NA engine, a proper manual, RWD with LSD - that shit never gets old!
