I can’t help but be amazed at what was allowed to hit the air when I was a kid.

JOHNNY OLSON'S VOICE IS SO RECOGNIZABLE. I CAN STILL HERE HIM SAYING "FROM THE SUNSHINE CAPITAL OF THE WORLD MIAMI BEACH" FOR THE JACKIE GLEASON SHOW.
    JOHNNY OLSON IS A LEGEND.

I always loved Kitty Carlisle. She seemed so excentric and highly intelligent.

This show was taped at NBC's Studio 6A at Rockefeller Center, the same studio where they did Jimmy Fallon's "Tonight Show". The first three years of the series was at CBS' Studio 50 before they moved where this show was taped.

I agree with Kitty. This idea of the first contestant was a total disgrace!

That opening bit had me wondering if the first guest was an expert on sexual harassment.

Sadly, this wasn't considered harassment back then.

Kitty shrank to about 5 feet tall towards the end of her long, illustrious life. Before that she was a statuesque 5 feet 6 inches tall.

In 1971, I guess only men drove on highways and only women shopped in supermarkets. It's really hard not to feel that the opening skit and first round are just one big prank on the audience.

What I hate about these later episodes, is how the producers tried to "freshen" up the show. It got canceled anyway. Seems to me that when you have a formula that works, stick with it to the end!

Lichtenstein got this not-so-original idea from a 1959 issue of Mad Magazine.

Everyone connected with this program would have been fired... and possibly jailed... if this bizarre opening was produced today. I'm no defender of over-the-top political correctness, but this attempt at humor went WAY too far.
