I feel so sorry for the dad. He spent 2 years debating if he should tell the truth about how the mom died, the day he tells her, she tries to kill him and her friend the dies in the span of a few hours.
This movie truly has an amazing way of talking about addiction. Like yes this is a horror film; but the first time you touch the hand and let the spirit in, you feel this “glow” and it’s nothing you feel before. Just like drugs.
I don't think it's "a metaphor for drugs", in that it's not _about that,_ it's just heavily using that allusion to tell its story. Like, I'm not convinced the message of the movie is about doing drugs or addiction or any of that. I feel like it's just a clever parallel to tell a horror story.
So the directors of this said that it wasnt her mother at all. They said it is the drowned decaying woman that possessed her from her first time letting her in. The spirit stayed with her and used her mother to manipulate her. You can tell that its the drowned spirit because the moms decaying flesh and the mom looks like she was just more drenched as the movie went along. The spirit that took over riley is the spirit that the drowned woman points out when she was first possessed by her. "There he is" "hell split ya pretty boy" she apparently had a partner and together they were able to manipulate the humans in order to be able to trap riley.
That was basically how I always understood it more or less. I didn't assume the spirits "worked together" so much as I thought that the spirts followed them around even when they weren't doing the séance.
It's hard to say if the spirit that we see was ever really Mia's mother or if it was just her when Riley did the hand and then another took over. Either way, the spirit Mia sees is clearly not her mother and is probably the drowned woman Mia sees when she first does the hand. The drowned spirit looks at Riley and says they like you, then threatens to hurt (split) him, then starts repeating run. Further proof is Mia's mom died of an overdose, yet the more we see of the spirit pretending to be her, the more water noises we hear and the wetter the mom looks.
Seems like the spirits can read your thoughts or memories in a way. The one inside the boyfriend said he doesn’t like it when the girlfriend touches him, so obviously the spirit could feel that. So I feel like the drowned woman possessed her originally and found out enough about her mom to later trick her inside Riley.
Yeah, it was most likely the drowned spirit playing Mia like a fiddle to extend the time during Riley's possession. Also the one who possesses Riley is most likely alluded to be the male spirit the drowned spirit points to during Mia's first possession, saying "there he is" and "he'll split ya". He's also the spirit pretending to be the little girl in the hospital, as in the visions of hell we see the same old man in the hospital bed and wheelchair holding onto riley as he gets tortured. I wonder what the relationship between those spirits are, and how a relationship in the spirit realm would be even possible. Like why is Mia's demon working so hard towards Riley's demons goals, instead of just trying to get Mia killed ASAP. I think the spirit that took Riley might have a bigger role in the lore than I initially assumed.
Directors in an interview said it was the drowned woman each time, because you hear bubbles when her "mom" showed up. Also, after her first time (going overtime) that night the drowned woman brushed against Riley's face in his sleep. She was already under limited possession at that time, so she probably saw her watching/listening to videos of her mom as she does it all the time. But also, it's likely spirits can read your mind when they possess you but it's not 100% proven.
Yessss. I LOVE this movie. It’s so good. I saw it at least three times in theaters. I tried to take everyone I could, every chance I got 😄 I love hearing people’s interpretations of the ending.
I could appreciate the technical making of the movie. But just like you I would never mess with the spirit world like that, and that is why I found the whole premiss of the movie stupid. It was also parts that didn't really make sense for me personally. I'm quite unsensitized to horror movies, and since this one was so highly regarded I had too high expectations I guess - because it didn't scare me at all. But it's fun to see your reaction to horror movies.
Like you said 29:22 stay in the state you died, so by that logic the mom should've looked like how she died, if she took pills, and died in the bathroom with her finger nails bloody. Why would the mom every time we see her look more and more different, it was the one spirit just imitating her.
i thought it was a excellent way to show how a different generation of kid would treat a paranormal situation the rakka bois out did themselves on this one for sure
Yes Arianna...total agree. Felt like taking a bath after....like I was a dutty bwai just for watching. The hand gave them wings...then took away their sky. Forever. Bloody good reaction and assessment.
I get that this is their version of doing drugs at parties but out of everything in this film, the part I have to suspend my disbelief the most on is the idea that these kids actually enjoy it. Otherwise it's a pretty cool movie and the brother's experience is gnarly.
My generation nowadays would 100% be down for some voodoo gumbo like this. You’d be surprised what people do when they don’t have to chop wood to survive.
@@andrewstephens5885 I mean, we as humans have always done that stuff though. Bloody Mary and the Ouija board are talked about in the same breath as slumber parties. There's thousands of different stories from different cultures about people, and children, messing with things they don't understand, either for grief, power, or entertainment. This generation is a bit off in ways we aren't used too, but we as people have always been a bit off when it comes to this stuff
I think it was an impressive freshman effort but clearly a freshman effort. it's influences are very obvious and the structure would have lent itself to a short maybe better than a feature cause the feature feels short and kinda overly simple. it's very Sixth Sense meets Hereditary with some splashes of Euphoria. I also think the analogy for drugs is very obvious and a little corny but it still kicks the heck out of most things you'd see cruising on Netflix
I feel so sorry for the dad. He spent 2 years debating if he should tell the truth about how the mom died, the day he tells her, she tries to kill him and her friend the dies in the span of a few hours.
Not to mention he'll probably never find out why either.
It was also the same as the way her mom died. Begging for help while he slammed on the door trying to get it open.
This movie truly has an amazing way of talking about addiction. Like yes this is a horror film; but the first time you touch the hand and let the spirit in, you feel this “glow” and it’s nothing you feel before. Just like drugs.
I love how this is an obvious metaphor for drugs but its done so tastefully and filmed so well you almost forget
Did make me feel a bit bad about watching it high tho lol

@@Trepanation21 it is 100%. Even the directors/writers said so. At its core it's about addiction in general, not specifically drugs.

The RUclips twins RackaRacka have outdone themselves with this film. The fact that this is their debut film is crazy
The acting in this movie is amazing. There's a good chance that if they make another movie it'll be a prequel. Great reaction channel.
Very well done horror movie and I absolutely loved Ariana's reactions lol
The kid smashing his head and plucking his eye out, dude that got such a crazy reaction when I saw this in the theater
YESS!!! Hella excited for this reaction 😁
This went straight into my top 10 of horror films. I loved everything about this and thought it was done brilliantly.
Ariana gives this movie 1,000 No's. I hope she got the hugs she needed after this.
That was the most intense show I've ever watched great twist at the end 🤯

I'm not entirely convinced she enjoyed that.
enjoying a good horror movie looks like not enjoying it cause its meant to make you uncomfortable

This movie relied less on jump
scares than I expected. (No offense to any movie). I liked that. I didn’t know it would take a place over days.
❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥
Poor Arianna! I liked the movie overall, but I had to get over how unlikable so many of the minor characters were.
Yeah it made it hard to care about them. Based on how unlikable they were, you would assume this would have a higher body count.
Not scary but very good!!! And I think they contacted demons not spirits
She gets contacted at the end and she's not a demon
This movie made it so hard to feel bad for the protagonist. Mia was always manipulating people to suit her needs 😬
Like an addict in that regard. True to life.
"woof"... Is that what the kids are saying these days?
The mom in this is like a clone of the mom in Ozark.
The teens in this movie are some of the dumbest horror-movie teens I've ever seen, but also pretty realistic.
