I've never heard an elk bark, lol! That was interesting. Good tip on the squirrels. I always hear them barking, but always thought they were doing that because of MY presence. Will have to look around a bit more when I hear that!
Wow! Love your videos man. You got some great points in this video, thanks for sharing that! I will make sure to check for squirrel sounds when I'm out.
I do not know your personal thoughts on your new lens, but to me the images look spot-on superb. Very nice indeed. Great to see you using fieldcraft and knowledge to find the Owl, and you got rewarded too...brilliant stuff. Great video, keep "em coming! ATB
Elk sounds a bit like roe deer that we have here in the uk. They are much, much smaller but make a similar noise as they run off once you have disturbed them.
I'll do my best ! Your videos really are inspiring. And of course, I love your portfolio, great photos in this amazing place I hope I get to explore one day !
Great vid again! Pics nice as always and are looking sharp and contrasty so the 100-400 seems to be a winner as far as judgeable from a HD-Vid... I'm impressed by the Owl let you come that close while hunting btw.. but mb the animals here in Germany are more careful ;)
@@SteveMattheis I look forward to that vlog post! … this is the first video of yours that I have watched but I’m already a subscriber! I came across your video as I am prepping to expand on the hobby of wildlife bird photography. I live in Michigan so every winter I spend time learning something new for my short time outdoors in the spring through fall. Thank you for a great content and I will be spending a lot of time on your channel! One of the first things that I noticed on this video was your Pat and I was going to inquire about any Bigfoot experiences that you might’ve had. But this reply answered at all! Be safe!
Very nice video with some superb shots. I have a couple of question about your gear, if you don't mind me asking. First, I know you use the Sigma 100-400, but what is your longest lens and since your videos are so clean and sharp, what camera are you vlogging with? Thanks
My ‘big’ lens is a 600mm f/4. My main vloggin camera is a Panasonic G85 with Rode microphone. I also mount a Sony action cam on my windshield and use that quite a bit when I’m in the car. Hope that helps!
I love your videos! Where are these videos taken? You don't have to get all technical, I don't like to expose the locations of owls, was just wondering what state!
This is like your 10th video im watching and i just cant get over how the hell do you find the owls so easily and often, but what surprises me more is why on earth aren't they scared of you?!?!?!?!?! I don't know much about owls but if something, that they are shy. I wonder how can you get so close without them flying away instantly!
I don’t really have a great answer except that I spend a lot of time searching unsuccessfully but don’t post videos about that (boring!). And a lot of them don’t like people and will fly away. Every animal has a different personality though and some aren’t bothered by people. Luckily.
yes, that's clear that you dont find an owl everytime, but when you do, it's not even stared to hunt a few meters from you - just wow .... a friend of mine photographs owl, but with a 600 on a tripod hiding in a tent.
One time I came across a Northern Pygmy Owl in my local nature park. He knew I was there but let me get within 10 feet of him :) a lot of owls avoid human activity, but they don’t seem to be scared of humans.

Your not only a great photographer but your also hilarious.

Such a cool episode!! Thanks Amazing shots ! Thanks
Its really great to see the way you make your subject comfortable and they stick around you. People must calling “An Owl 🦉 Man”
+K E Y U R they don’t call me that, yet...
Just getting back into birding. Ran across your channel. This is a great episode! Thanks for sharing. Super information and superior photography.

Hi Steeve, just love the videos. Keep them coming please! I think Sigma needs to sponsor you, I think you have me sold on that 100-400.
Very cool.
You're a wizard making animals appear !
You definitely deserve more subscribers !
Haha thanks! I just started a few months ago and am getting new subs every day. Please share the videos you like, that will help...

So cool! love that wing stretch shot. Looking forward to watching the review of that lens

Hi Steve! I've found a couple GGOs listening for red squirrels too. It really works!! Awesome videos keep posting!!! :-)
+Ashleigh Scully thank you! Yep, follow the squirrels...
When you were 1st starting or even now have to gotten a Great shot with a Kit lens ? Maybe in a situation where that was all you had with you ?
Absolutely. Kit lenses are great for lots of subjects.
Loved the video. You have a new fan.
Cool, thanks!

Thx for watching! Great Gray Owls in particular are generally more tolerant of people than most species for some reason.
What mosquito repellent do you use on your excursions Steve?
Typically I use a thermacell

Ever thought about using a flash or strobe to really make the birds pop?
+Christopher Wood I don’t use flash on owls.

that was Bigfoot doing his elk impersonation ;)
+G Pierson Someday I’m going to bump into one in the forest. That’ll be a viral vlog...

+Tristan Mann I live in Jackson, Wyoming and so far have made videos here in Jackson Hole and in Yellowstone.
Steve Mattheis Awesome! Love the videos!
Aaaaawesoooome. How do you like the d500? I'm thinking of getting it
+isaacs picz it's great, my current favorite body. But... the D850 is coming in about 10 days so that could change 😬
Steve Mattheis I know the 850 looks like a beast! If you get it you should do a review on it
