Awesome stuff!! Thanks for sharing! Some commentary would be great, I know it is awkward in the beginning :-D! Will this go for your own use? What's the benefit of holding the tool in the tool post over the turret lathes tailstock?
sunppaa the turret lathes are the the number 1 choice but my customer asked if it was possible on a lathe. I would like to do commentary but I had a car crash 3 years ago which left me with speech problem. I sound drunk when I speak. It's why I love your channel...you explain what's happening in a precise way. Our job is the best job in the world. NO mistakes allowed. Thank you.
I am a design engineer but I design machinery. I have always marveled at tooling designers. Their creativity and ability to think outside the box is something I always admired. Well done; keeping Sheffields reputation intact.
This is the first time I have ever seen a metal cylinder bored that deep and wide. With so many RUclips channels on heavy metal drilling, boring, milling, etc., why am I seeing it now? Incredible sight to see for someone that appreciates precision work.
This video was great and im glad i found your channel. I got a little confused when you used the other trepanning tool. I thought i missed some steps. Looks like a job very well done though. Congratulations on being one of the good machinists and i'll be watching all of your videos.
Nice to watch a D.S.G. lathe being used, the parts you are producing and the finished results take some believing with the older machines you have . Great to have a longer upload with more information just to see how much is involved .
thanks Chris. yes the D.S.G is old but what a machine. ive worked on many makes of lathe and nothing comes close to them. ive done work on this that it was never expected to do. never broke down in 25 years.the bridgeport millers are the rolls royce of manual millers. again never lets me down. thanks for watching.
I used one for a few days while the regular turner was off sick , be about 1972 . Never been so impressed with a manual lathe as the .D.S.G. I have always said they are the Rolls Royce of manual lathes, Always wanted one but could never afford one . have to make do with a 13x60 Colchester but it's just an old mangle compared to D.S.G.
I lived next to Bridgeport (Connecticut) growing up and most of its manufacturing is long gone now. I still remember the court case where The Bridgeport Milling company proved its design was copied (I forget if it was Japanese or Korean company), but the court didn't care. As you know, they are long gone now too.
hi dave. are you back in america now? if so are you able to film the solar eclipse where you are? you will need a filter for your camera to see it. a welding mask works too.
I have always admired both the economy and precision of trepanning, even if only using the old knuckle busting General Tools fly cutter on the drill press, it's almost like getting something for nothing when both the work and the offcut have value.☺
Here is how you made the tool, great, thank you. What was the materials you used?. I found a you-tube and had Sanvick tool that looks like yours but smaller dia and shorter. Your insert holders Sanvick?
Wondering about the welding of 4140 material, it's not a type of material that is suitable for welding really. Why is the end cap a separate piece in the first place, machine size limitations?
The maximum I can do is 42" long due to maximum bed length but I can make any size tool any length. Email debbie@tooltek.co.uk for any enquiries. Thanks for watching. 👍
Talking prior/ during machining operations is good as with a lot of other videos on RUclips. But it is good just watching the machining in stead of listen to someone trying to explain what they are trying to do, you can see what is happening no need to talk to much. I was thinking that your english speaking was not so good, so you choose not to speak ( I read one previous reply and now i understand why ) I think a lot of people are and will enjoy watching your videos. Just keep doing what you do, and enjoy the reasons for starting a RUclips channel. Have already subscribed and like what you do. All the best, Regards Peter.
Hi Dave, at 12 minutes in I'm guessing you have drilled the holes for mounting on the piss so's that the cutter obviously pulls down but also back against the back shoulder. So did you tap the mating holes in the insert holder as well. Also is the insert at assembly parallel to the opposite cutter when installed? I'm also guessing it's Bob on the centerline. Thanks from Canada.
Just curious, if you cant get the size of, bar or pipe you require, why not get a casting?. Sure there will be pattern costs, but the time and material you used to make your trepanning tool must have been significant. Nice tool BTW.
Amazing work! Really interesting to see the different types of work in the industry. What kind of shop do you work for, you sure make a lot of trepanning tools and do a lot of trepanning, which is a great way of doing what you do, such material and energy savings that way. And you seem to have both fine and brawny skill, judging by how you’ve ruffed and finished some of the shafting I your other videos, inconel, titanium… torque is king! 🤴 👑 haha great stuff, like the channel. Which part of the UK are you from?
Looking at Davids hands he is a young bloke---but he can call himself a master machinist-- other blokes on you tube like joe pie are not on the same page. How pie can call himself close to a master is beyond me when we have machinists like David..Skiting and ego comes to mind.
@@userwl2850 Yes and it's terrible. You might benefit by watch some of the other machining videos out there. Guys who explain what and why there are doing different operation. Ahh, too bad. Thanks!
I would guess that the benefit of holding the tool in the tool post is the tool can be fed automatically.
userwl2850 beautiful work
@lindowan123 wow thanks buddy. That helps with my confidence. I love this comment. Thanks again. 😎 🍺🖐👍
Good to see some manual machining for a change . Just getting it done ... 👍👍👌👌

Thanks Johnny
awesome work mate - i hope i get the chance to make and use a treepanning tool like this one day on my shop. thanks for the nice video!

leegenix hey thanks. I do trepanning on much more difficult steels than this. I can bore a 15" hole in metal. Thanks for watching.
Great craftsmanship.
that's like watchin' a suspense movie!! Super
That was a freaking COOL video! Never imagined you could do such massive work on a Bridgeport. Trepanning is very neat! Thanks for the video.
Randy Wilson thanks Randy. I subbed your channel. 👍
Wow, thanks for much!!! I am going to start making a lot more video very soon.
I can’t imagine what this is going on but very impressed with the surface finish from the core drill! Nice work!👍

Hi Dave
Is it viewable in China?
Just arrived into Nanjing from Ningbo
I'm here another month
fly to Boston from BJ on 9-17
Very nice work. So it's kinda like a giant annular cutter in a way... Neat!
Davo Moto yes that's exactly what it is.
How did i not find you till now🤯🤯??
I've been here years 😂

BeachsideHank absolutely. The core the customer gets from doing the first 3 jobs will pay for the tool and they have over 100 to do.
@@userwl2850 That's a quick return on investment. Well into positive territory.
That... is.... awesome!
Miss your videos mate.
Awesome channel
Good work David 👍🏻🇬🇧
I used to trepan 12inch stainless blanks to make valve seats
wonderful.
after watching your videos we successfully implemented.
again thanks and regards
You make it seem so easy, but it's not. Excellent work.
abom should step up after this!
I don't think abom does any work like this anymore which is a shame as I thought it was more interesting

Second time I have watched it....the dogs nuts.
pretty cool, is there a video available in op?
Do you need maybe some turner?
Hiii.when you drilling there is no cooling system at the kit.
رجل شرقي not for video.
what is the name of that tool holder? I'm looking to do something similar, not as big though!!
Grt work sir u r genius 👍👍👍👍
So you used a trepanning tool to make another (bigger diameter ?) trepanning tool ?
Serge Gostoli lol yes I did..
Are most of the metals you cut this way not available in hollowmbar?
Trevor Parnell no not available.
Had to ask........
Hello what's the name of the tool in the minute 7:40???
It's a smaller trepanning tool... to make a bigger trepanning tool.
Some serious firepower...
i like the machine used ,its a heavy duty machine
you are proffesional!!!
Holy doley, what a fantastic job, well done, really awesome
Unbelievable, just came to my mind that that tool's internal volume is bigger than that of an average coolant tank, just as a scope of things!
Several yrs back i.made the same attachment but the with of job was just 60mm used the white tools arc welded and held in tail stick by socket
I own a Lathe.....but......I usually have no idea what it is you are making but always enjoyable to watch 👍🏼

Hi, How much maximum length u can trepann ???
if we req tool can we get ????

Thank you very much...
Thank you very much...
This tool is on its way to Dubai
I could of just made one here...
I'm just curious if the black carbide cutter holders are a part you made, or ordered from somebody else
Mārtiņš Zinbergs hello buddy. I make them and sell them. The fit all size from 70mm to 300mm.
fantastic work, are the insert heads general turning tools or specific to trepanning.
the cartridge insert holders are used in various tools, mainly U DRILLS and use a WCMX insert.
mind blown!
i wonder how much it would cost to make and post a trepanning tool to me in australia?
Can you please help me to guide me what's the insert number you are using?
With hope waiting for your responce .

Brilliant work, some serious lumps of high strength material Inconel 718 ect. Great videos. Is that DSG lathes ? Finest maker of lathes "ever "
Yes.. DSG type 21. Brilliant machines. 👍
You're getting a great surface finish from that old lathe, nice work indeed .is the trepanning tool body made of 4140 or something like ?
Yes Paul. 4145. Or EN24T 👍
That fucking amazing work. Never see before tool like this. And size! 👍👍👍👍👍👍
Wonderful work, but I don't understand when you said it was time to get "magnet".👍😎

costs of pattern and casting would be horrendous in UK. Plus a casting would ideally need forging for strength.
Great use of the proper(correct) name of this tool. Most machinist don't know the correct name. Fly cutter isn't correct.
Think I got it, so to make the tools to make the tools, you make the tools.
