I had never heard of that, alleged, diary excerpt by Admiral Byrd. It sounds like he'd been reading Edgar Rice Burroughs The Land That Time Forgot, which featured an island around Antarctica covered in lush forest with a river running through it populated by strange people and even stranger beasts. Speaking of Burroughs, in his Tarzan series, Burroughs made the lost city of Opar an Atlantis lost colony deep in the African jungle (don't ask). Maybe Byrd WAS reading too much Burroughs? 😁
I definitely think there is a strong basis of truth to Atlantis, which became exaggerated in time. Plato didn't pluck it out of thin air. It would be nice to think it was beyond the Pillars of Hercules in the Atlantic Ocean but I lean to it probably being somewhere in the Mediterranean.
