- On Yom Kippur 1973, the holiest day of the Jewish year, Israel’s air raid sirens started to blare. Egypt and Syria-still bitter over Israel’s victory in the Six-Day War-had launched a surprise attack. Israel’s survival hung in the balance. How it responded in this existential moment shaped Middle East history for the next five decades.

The date was October 6, 1973, Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the Jewish year.
Synagogues in Israel were filled with Jews fasting and praying.
Then, at precisely 2:00 p.m., air raid sirens started to blare.
The prayers stopped.
In their place came whispers-rumors of war.
But they weren’t rumors.
In the south, an Egyptian force of 100,000 soldiers backed by 1,300 Soviet-made tanks was crossing the Suez Canal.
They quickly overran a series of fortifications Israel had constructed along the Canal following the 1967 Six-Day War.
Israeli fighter jets scrambled to meet the invading force, but the Egyptians were ready with the latest generation of Soviet-designed anti-aircraft batteries. Israeli tanks ran into a deadly barrage of anti-tank missiles. These were weapons Egypt didn’t possess in 1967, and Israel wasn’t prepared to deal with them.
The Egyptians inflicted hundreds of casualties, but the Sinai desert is deep and far from Israel’s southern border.
There was no such buffer in the north.
Hundreds of Syrian tanks, outnumbering Israeli tanks five to one, broke through Israeli defenses on the Golan Heights.
That night, Israel’s legendary Defense Minister, Moshe Dayan, appeared on Israeli television and broke down in front of the cameras, telling viewers that the Jewish state was in danger of total destruction.
How did this disaster happen?
There’s one simple answer: complacency.
Israel needs to stop listening to other countries and do what's best for Israel.
The US needs to do what’s best for itself and stop listening to Israel. Also stop sending them or money and weapons.
Good job PragerU 👏
Excellent videos, Prager U👍
If there was an atrocity or tragedy, don't be surprised when Kissinger was behind it

The red green alliance is still active.
You left out the battle of Chinese Farm, which was three hellish days of T-55 and M-48 tanks fighting muzzle to muzzle in 360-degree combat, blowing the turrets off from as close as a meter apart. When it was over, hundreds of tanks on both sides (and their crews) littered the desert.
There was no fierce fighting before the encirclement of the Third Army. What simply happened was that there was a gap between the Second and Third Egyptian Armies, which was detected by a supersonic American aircraft and this information was relayed to Israel. Based on this information, the Israeli forces moved, encircled the Third Army, and besieged it.
Shouldn't you be meeting your goat wife?
If the Egyptians didn't win the war, why and how did they take Sinai back? Is this how negotiations are conducted?
Israel gave it up. You know Israel could just nuke Cairo yeah? Idiot.
your interpretation just shows why the whole region is a mess.
@@dukeff4 Fine, enlighten me with your correct interpretation then.
they got it back in the peace accord between begin and sadat like he explained in the end of the video
@@yanivray Okay, my friend, maybe I wasn't clear. I know there was a peace treaty between Egypt and Israel. What I'm talking about is how Israel agreed to give up the entire Sinai Peninsula in the peace negotiations if it had won the war. What did Israel get in return from Egypt?
I don't think mentioning Meir's average consumption of cigarettes helps. It just damages her reputation even if it's a fact!
Complacency? I would think "assumptions " is a more dangerous word!!! It's a word that's usually not based on facts but opinions.
PRAGERU!!!!!
could?
I like how the picture of Golda Meir had her with a cigg in her hand. Lol

Wooden doors?
Even after crossing the canal, besieging the Third Army, and cutting off its supplies, the Israeli army could not enter the city of Suez or the city of Ismailia... the Israeli army could not defeat a group of policemen and civilians.
Time for your diaper change!
Did Israel give back part or all of the Sinai to Egypt?
ALL, simply because they know that Egypt is too big for them to have as an enemy .... land for peace
Israel had goals in 1973 which they Achieved non of them
Stay in Sinai forever
Destroy the Egyptian Army
Force Cairo to surrender
Egyptian Goals🇪🇬
Return Sinai
Cause the israelis the biggest loss in their History
Vengeance for what happened in 1967
Destroy Barlev Line
They even claimed that Barlev Line is “Invincible” and it learned from the mistakes of the German and French Defensive lines in WW2 and it appears that it also falled into the same mistakes as the rest of the lines
They even failed to block the supplies coming from Egypt to Sinai for the army that is fighting there
And if Israel after not Achieving their goals and also claim the victory why did they formed a committee right after the events of 1973 to investigate in the reasons of Loss?

Why after fighting for a land that is important for me in the religious way and for the safety of my people I just return it if I am negotiating from a strong position? What kind of War do you win and lose a land at the same time ?😆
Help Israel and stop supplying Ukraine
Help both!
Help neither!!
Ukraine deserves the help , Israel? They don't
עם ישראל חי
So that's where the US tax payers' dollars are going...
When Israel is fighting the Arab Islamic world, would you sooner send money or troops, because if they ever lose, you're next for Islamists.

Wait, but isn't the Sinia desert Egyptian territory? If Egypt had invaded Israel, why did the fighting against Egypt start there? Genuinely curious, not trying to post some anti-Jewish snark.
Israel took the Sinai in 1967
Israel took it from Egypt in '67 and said it would trade it off in exchange for recognition, which Egypt said NO since, other than security in the Suez canal, the Sinai is not important and Israel would just eventually get rid of it anyway, but it was a good buffer against the invasion as seen on the video. Also their strategy worked and they ended up recognizing Israel later.
@@felipeazevedo6704 The Sinai had major oil fields which contributed significantly to the Israeli economy of the time.

Israel was completely conquered in 1948. A year after the establishment of Israel, the Egyptian army was fighting in Jerusalem and Fallujah, and Egyptian planes were bombing Tel Aviv. The United Nations concluded an armistice between the parties and stopped this war. Secondly, the October 1973 war. Its aim was only to liberate Sinai, not to invade Israel, as the fa
Cool story but I will not go die for israel
You keep saying "Soviet-made tanks", "Soviet-made..... ", but when talking about the Israeli side you don't say " American-made .... ".
Well, these are the facts: 1) Israel is an occupier state that has no right to exist neither in Palestine nor Syria, or Saini.
2) Israel is the one who started it in 1948.
3) If USA hadn't supported Israel since 1948, there would have never been a state called Israel by now.
4) USA is the one that supports problems and wars in the Middle East, they are using Israel as their dog to protect the USA businesses in the Middle East
US had an arms embargo on Israel until 1968 Abdul.
Cry more loser.
Typical loser, keep crying😂
The facts are that you are clearly antisemetic and are basically calling for the annilihation of the Jewish people by denying the right for the only Jewish country in the world to exist. Israel was and will always exist. These are the facts, buddy.
I can tell that you're historically illiterate because
1. The Arab countries started in 1948 by invading Israel
2. The Jews accepted the UN partition plan in 1947 while the Arabs rejected it
3. Nice way to blame all of your problems on America.
Using Israel as their dog? Is that what you call protecting them from 3 arab countries that are constantly invading them?
Many times across these videos we heard about the U.S. & Israel trying not to be perceived as the aggressor, holding back. If it was up to the arabs, they would start another holocaust and wipe out the west without a 2nd thought. How do you expect us to be okay with that?
