I live in the Southwestern Appalachian Mountains in North Carolina! Not too far from the Smoky Mountains National Park. Most of the trees have lost all their leaves here, and it's starting to get colder too. I should mention, that back in 1999 my best friend and I hiked the South Rim to North Rim. We planned for it for two years. Back then, in order to get our permits, I was awake at 6 am and kept faxing our permits until they went through. We were lucky and got the exact days of our hike in mid-Autumn. What amazed the both of us was the amount of water flowing down side canyons from numerous springs. We stayed at the campground at Phantom Ranch for 3 days and 2 nights. We had made reservations a year in advance to eat dinner and breakfast while there. It's a hike that should be on many "bucket lists".
