Hi Teacher, you missed out on an interesting point, I am not a Chinese, nevertheless I learnt my mandarin in the 1980s when we never had your superb talent neither the You tube then. You are certainly the best teacher in the world. I'd never forget when I learnt the characters 'ming bai' (Understand) came from 'ming' derived from 're' and 'yue' sun and moon in combination becomes 'ming' (bright) and 'Chong Ming' as wise. This is the precise reason I loved mandarin characters.
I know a 50 years old Man from The domincan republic who started to Learn mandarín at The age of 48, first he learnt pinyin and now at The age of 50 he can speak fluently and can also write hanzi using more than 3000 characters, so, i think we also can make it.
I started learning three days ago. I like it that you don't have worry about alphabets and grammar too much in write, you just go straight to learning words and memorizing.
People think Chinese is intimidating because it looks completely different from what they're used to. "There's no WAY I can learn 3,000 Chinese characters.. You're crazy!" But if you think about it, how many words does the average person have in their vocabulary? Just a different way of thinking is all.
To me 3000 characters are not unfathomable. However 3000^2 words you can build with them... It's much too learn and you do need to learn them as it is not like you automatically know what one or another combination of known characters might result in.
@@miloradowicz I mean in Chinese each character in itself is a morpheme. In English, each word can be composed of many morphemes. So learning each Chinese character is like learning the different English morphemes like in "unfathomable". Un before the word means not and able after means able. Quite similar to the Chinese as described in the video.
I know your comment is three years old, but the issue is that in phonetic languages, you have to memorize 26,28 or more letters and you'll be able to to read any article or book even though you don't understand, and the more you learn, your vocabulary will get better... But in Chinese, I think every word, (or most of them,?!) is written differently.... This is why, it's hard to learn it.. I believe even Chinese people can't understand their literature, most of them..
I can’t believe how far Mandarin instruction has advanced. I studied it in the late 90s and now the content on youtube is like a thousand times better than my formal education ever was. I should pick it up again.
We've come a long way from the traditional methods of teaching Chinese, and our curriculum in particular is designed with non-native speakers in mind. I hope you get back into your Mandarin studies and hope you enjoy studying with us! 😊
I’ve been speaking Mandarin with my family but I’ve never learned how to read or write it. I ignored all my lessons when I was a kid. Just recently I realized how important it is for my heritage and family and I’ve lost much of my touch with Chinese over the years. I can barely keep up a conversation anymore except the basics. I decided to slowly start rebuilding my Chinese up again and your videos have really inspired and motivated me! 谢谢老师!
500 for basic communication(greetings, basic Q&A). 1000 for daily conversation.1500 for fluent daily conversation. Most native speaker like myself know 2000-4000 characters. But its more about putting them in contexts than simply knowing them.
2400 characters isnt enough at all (HSK 5), I know 3000 characters and often time I dont know words on Chinese drama, I am studying hsk 6 now to aim for 5000 characters
I don't know how many characters I've learned (maybe something near 500 or less), but I can comunicate with Chinese people on QQ, so it's true that you don't need to know like a huge ammount of characters for that :o
Yes, very nice. It is easier to remmember new characters when placed in two-character words. For instance i always mix 问 & 间。 but when I see 问题, there is no hesitation because my brain recognize the 2-characters words.
True when you read, not when you write. On one hand it makes you more fluent, on the other hand you grow dependent on circumstances that may not always be met. What for instance if there's a line break between 问 and 题. Will you still be able to easily read them as a single word? Or will it disrupt your understanding of the whole sentence? It's not to say that there's no merit in picturing the word as a whole, it's even truer in Japanese where the pronunciation of the characters is heavily affected by the words they're in (like 部 in 部屋 and 全部). But at some point you need to be able to tell the characters apart without the whole words they appear in.
@@retroanim Yes I understand what you mean. Of course I have some problem like "应该" or "知道" where I recognize the word but not the characters so when I see 应 I am mix, I have to think, is this ying or gai... But if I see 该 it is easy cause I know it looks like 孩 which is hai, so gai is close. Nothing is perfect.
I like this video. Learning hànzì is a long way to go for a majority of English speaking people. It is like Japanese takes many years to learn Spanish which English speaking people take just a couple of years or so. On the other hand, the Japanese take just a few months to be able to acquire business level Chinese(pronunciation is not as hard as you think). Anyhow, discipline is the key to learn languages.
Thank you for the positive feedback! Discipline is key, but it's also important to have the right approach! We recommend students first get a foundation for spoken Mandarin before you start to learn Chinese characters. It’s a lot easier to learn how to read and write when you already know the vocabulary and sounds the characters you are learning form. And it’s a lot easier to focus on your pronunciation and the basic grammar and vocabulary of spoken Mandarin when you aren’t also trying to memorize hundreds of characters.

As a low intermediate, I totally agree with this video. I know most of the characters that I see. With a little help (to look up words I don't know), I can understand what people write and I can write to them in Chinese. Note that every language has the same problem: there is a core of around 800 most-common words, but less common words appear often. So it isn't realistic to "know every word you will see". But learning the most common characters in Chinese? That's a perfect strategy.
I have 312 characters organized on my notebook and another one with sentences. My goal is to get the 3000 characters or more. Since i started to get more information and write it, i can visualize sentences on my mind.

It's complicated. In English too we can have parts of words having their own meaning. For example, in the English word "redo" we have the prefix "re" and the root verb "do" and together they convey the meaning "do again". "Bicycle" is another example: it literally means "two (wheeled) cycle". The Chinese words for bicycle 自行车 and 脚踏车 mean "self moving vehicle" and "foot pedal vehicle", respectfully. But there are Chinese words that cannot be broken down this way. Traditionally every character had its own meaning but in modern Chinese some characters only represent sounds and a spoken word in Chinese would be represented by two characters that don't have meaning by themselves. This would be especially true for words like 咖啡 (coffee) and 咖喱 (curry) that were borrowed from other languages. Please correct me if I am wrong about this.
The chinese that ur talking about which cannot be broken down are more like "chinglish" or "chonglish". those words are meant to sound like english words since there is no direct translation for the word. For example the english word "calories" is written like 卡路里 (kaluli) which cannot be broken down or have a direct meaning. These are just pure memorization so it is quite hard to learn at first sight.
such as 尴尬, both of the characters should combine together to make the meaning of "embarrassing " Each of the two characters cannot stand independently in spoken or written chinese. if you look up into the chinese dictionary to look for the 尴 word, the dictionary will only tell you the meaning of that word when it combine with 尬, which is, 'embarrassing'

I really enjoy the lessons provided by yoyo chinese but it would breat if you could provide some free lessons for those of us who can't afford to purchase the whole course as we would like to learn more characters... thanks. .. you are a very beautiful teacher!
You make learning Chinese easy and fun! I love language because it allows us to communicate with others, and think about things in another way! Think of how many people we can communicate with with a shared language opposed to people who don’t speak your language? It feels like a missed opportunity of getting to know someone. If you speak with someone in their native language, then you speak to their heart. And looking at China becoming an economic power, there’s no reason not to learn Chinese now, especially with the large population of Chinese people across the world, and building good relations between nations. :)
Thank you for this awesome comment Tony! I appreciate the positive feedback, and I love your enthusiasm about the language. You are totally right: when you can learn even the basics of this language, it is a huge opportunity to build better relationships - both personally and between nations. And there is really nothing like being able to communicate with someone in their native language. 加油 (jiā yóu)!
Im learning japanese language right now and its pretty much the same techniques when youre beginner, but in Japanese their are 2 readings in majority of the characters that youll need to get used how a word was written in Kanji , so I kinda came here if I can juggle 2 languages and it seems impossible for me. and im guessing mandarin will be kinda be a piece of cake when im done with japanese maybe in 2-4 years.

I read, back in the early 1960s, about a Chinese character typewriter that had 3000 characters. I also heard that 4000 characters were required to be "functionally literate" and that a reasonably well-educated person should know over 6000 characters.

I just want to understand the correlation between characters and the words so what's the point here learn characters or words I mean hsk levels or Learn characters .for example hsk 5,6 what is the amount of characters? 🤔
Characters each have meaning, and combine to form words. We recommend you first get a foundation for spoken Mandarin before you start to learn Chinese characters. Would you tell me please, how to boost memorized and how many words should learn daily basis. I was interested writing character while memorizing it then conversation in order to faster learning. Do you think it is the right way?
I’ve spent about 100,000 hours studying English humor and Western culture, and about 100,000 hours studying Chinese culture. My native language is Chinese. I teach Chinese language with humor and pictures. Hope you can recommend my videos to those who want to learn Chinese.
Anyway, thanks for this video. I get bored with conversational Chinese videos because I have been studying Chinese for almost 30 years now. I really need to improve my reading and writing: if I want to improve my listening and speaking it is better for me to just talk to someone. :)
Not nearly as monumental as you think! With just the most common 300 characters you can form 64% of all written Chinese, and the most common 600 characters form 80% of all written Chinese. That's a lot! It takes our students less than 1 year, studying only 30 minutes a day, to complete our 2 Chinese Character Courses and master these 600 characters. Then our Character Reader Course helps you make the jump from memorizing characters to reading full sentences and stories in Chinese! The first two units are free, so check it out and make your dream of learning to read Chinese come true: goo.gl/XcnV8r

Thank you for the positive feedback... I really appreciate it!
Thankbyou so much! I really love this series
When you are ready to learn Mandarin, our lessons will be here for you!
This chick is legit! Thanks Yoyo!
不客气 (bù kè qì)! 😊

I read, back in the early 1960s, about a Chinese character typewriter that had 3000 characters. I also heard that 4000 characters were required to be "functionally literate" and that a reasonably well-educated person should know over 6000 characters.
Thank you

I just want to understand the correlation between characters and the words so what's the point here learn characters or words I mean hsk levels or Learn characters .for example hsk 5,6 what is the amount of characters? 🤔
Characters each have meaning, and combine to form words. We recommend you first get a foundation for spoken Mandarin before you start to learn Chinese characters.
We recommend you first complete Level 1 of the Beginner Conversational Course before you start our Chinese Character Course I. At that point you’re ready to start learning these amazing characters!

Nice! You help alot!
Anyway, thanks for this video. I get bored with conversational Chinese videos because I have been studying Chinese for almost 30 years now. I really need to improve my reading and writing: if I want to improve my listening and speaking it is better for me to just talk to someone. :)
I love your videos! greetings from Colombia

明白 is míng bai (neutral).
You're my beautiful teacher, Yang Yang.
A monumental task.
.
我是美国人,我在学校学习中文。我不知道多中文字,我喜欢你的教训。谢谢!
MaceMan Sounds great! you can write these characters, but it might be better to say 教导 or 教学 than 教训. Haha, hope it can help.
MaceMan 教训 means “lesson” in "teach you a lesson". 教学 means “lesson” in "lesson 1/2/3..." or "teaching".
Thank you very much, I'll be sure to use this in the future!
MaceMan 我是美国人,我在学校学习中文。我不认识很多汉字,我喜欢你的教学。谢谢!

We also plan in the future to add content teaching many more characters. We also strongly recommend the Skritter app for learning Chinese characters! 😊👍🏼
