Bruce Lee was the only reason I watched the Green Hornet.
He was the reason alot of people watched it.
Unfortunately he is the reason there are DVDs out that are compilations of scenes from the show rather than proper full episodes.

When I watched the matchup between Kato and Robin as a kid, I thought there was no way Robin could beat Kato let alone fight to a draw.
I was thinking that Kato was holding back because they were also the good guys.
Bruce Lee threatened to quit because Robin was supposed to win. They compromised and so the “draw”.
That's reason Bruce Lee walked off the set. Burt ward was upset with the fact that he was going to lose. He walked over to director and whined about the role.
I remember the scene where Kato tells the Green Hornet, "Gung Fu is Gung Fu.. It's no child's play..."

I watched GH during its first run as a six year old. Every week I waited to see if Kato would get a substantial fight scene. Many weeks it was disappointing because Kato was an afterthought. The ridiculous matchup with Robin was like having Dr. Smith take down Don on a Lost in Space episode. You can't imagine the impression that Bruce Lee made on little kids of that era.

Bruce Lee was a Hero to a lot of young boys in the mid 60's and
that loyalty carried over to his movies in the 70's.

(2:29) Keye Luke portrayed Kato in the serials of 1940 and 1941. He played the blind Master Po in "Kung Fu" and the grandfather in "Gremlins."
He played Number one son in the Charlie Chan series of movies first.
He also played Governor Donald Cory in the Star Trek TOS 3rd season episode " Whom God's Destroy".
He was the only Asian actor to play Mr. Wong. He did cartoon voices. He played in big budget, low budget, leading roles, supporting roles, good roles, stereotypical roles, uncredited roles. He also did Broadway. He was also a noted artist.
Weird how they changed his nationality from Japanese to Filipino of Japanese descent to Korean. Like They couldn't list his original Chinese descent? 🤔
I saw Keye Luke in the 1940 (the year Lee was born) version of The Green Hornet. Luke did NO martial arts. All he used was gadgets to get out of trouble.
I loved both shows. The fights, the cars...holy crap that's all a six year old kid needs. That's entertainment! Though I will cop to this. Even as a six year old....whenever Catwoman or Batgirl was in an episode...I was a bit...just a bit... MORE interested. Though I had no idea why. ;)

Me too. I've looked at women who dress all up and wear makeup as superheroines to this day because of Batgirl and Catwoman. Perhaps, because of the transformation they go through. To me, they wear superhero uniforms and disguise themselves in makeup when they go out and about everyday.
"A Piece of the Action" & "Batman's Satisfaction" are a couple of my favorite '66 Batman episodes. The fight scene where they along with B & R take on Colonel Gumm and crew is the best.
The Green Hornet was one of my three very favorite TV shows when I was a kid. I got to meet Van Williams years later, which was a great treat. Got to meet Adam West, too; even though I really wasn't a Batman fan, I did watch the show. But as far as I was concerned, it could never compare with The Green Hornet.
Burt Ward was a black belt, who knew Bruce Lee off screen! They sparred together!

I am old enough to remember seeing both the Batman and Green Hornet series back before they went to re-runs, so I am amazed that I haven't run across these facts.
Yes, he was a black belt. But whined when he thought he would beaten in a fight on his show. And the producers went along with this. That's Brue walked off the set
For Burt, it was sparring. For Bruce, it was child's play.
Ward did not have a black belt during the time of the Batman show, if he ever had one. Also, he is the ONLY person to claim that he and Bruce were friends and sparring partners.
Truth was the Lee couldn't stand Wars because Ward was misrepresenting himself as a black belt according to Lee's widow, Linda, and Black Belt magazine publisher Mito Uyehara. Even worse, according to Van Williams, Bruce's co-star on The Green Hornet, Ward was telling everyone at the studio that he could "whip" Bruce Lee.
Lee was pissed off during the filming of the crossover of episode. Adam West and Van Williams were both worried. Whenever Bruce was around, Ward made sure he was standing next to the biggest person in the room, no matter who it was.
Ward is just another lying sack trying to make a name for himself by claiming that he and Lee were friends.

I'm old enough to have remembered watching that episode of Batman where the Green Hornet appeared, and we were all laughing at the fight scene between Robin and Kato. I was so obvious that Robin wouldn't have lasted several seconds.
When I see the reruns of GH, l can understand why it was canceled. The star, Van Williams, simply didn't have enough on screen appeal to carry the series. Although a handsome leading man, he seemed to lack charisma and was listless. Bruce Lee's martial arts was the only interesting aspect of the show, but because he was in a subordinate role to the star, and of course was Asian, his role on the series was very limited. Perhaps if the producers had expanded his role, or have even made the duo more of an active partnership, it could have become a hit series. Along with Lee being rejected for the TV series "Kung Fu," I guess it shows how racial discrimination affects not only its victims but its perpetrators as well.

The Green Hornet . movie serials like the Batman movie serials were better than anything on TV. Batman finally came into a serious characterization with Batman Begins. The Green Hornet is still out there waiting for the right actors and storyline.
The way to settle this issue is to have Kato fight against numerous villains from Batman's TV show. Robin always would lose whenever he was attacked by multiple attackers. Kato on the other would beat the tar out of the multiple attackers with ease. Leaving the bad guys laying on the ground with broken arms and broken legs!!!! There we could easily see who is the better fighter!!!! I would loved to see the Joker try choke Kato the way he always would choke Robin making Robin cry out "Help Batman!!!!" Kato would break both of the Joker's arms and knocked him out cold with a follow-up wicked kick to the Joker's head!!!
I never saw the Green Hornet but I liked the cross over with Batman that was cool to see.

I started writing a script, "The Birth of the Green Hornet". I made his father a WWII spy for the OSS and thought Harrison Ford would've (at the time) made a perfect GH.

I liked both shows when I was a kid. Batman and the Green Hornet. It was funny though I remember when the famous voice over announcer said something like 'What's this! A standoff between between the Caped Crusador, Robin, The Green Hornet and Kato!' To think that they wanted to push Robin beats Kato. I was laughing at the tie. 'Kato could kick Robin's ass easy!'

I love both the radio show AND the tv series starring Bruce Lee. I stumbled on the radio shows in my 30s when they use to have Saturday and Sunday night Old Time Radio from 7pm to midnight. Green Hornet was one of my favorites asking with Boston Blackie.
The BB movies are quality. Love Chester Morris. I like the TV show but it is a bit cutsy.
Loved The Green Hornet as a kid. Too bad Seth Rogan cast himself as The Green Hornet, thereby, ruining the movie. I think the main reason the 1966 show didn't catch on, was because it was very dark, usually at night, and most people still had black and white, often fuzzy reception, TV's. Couldn't see what was happening.
Well...I don't think that was the main reason, believe me. I was around during that era and audiences were so different. It's what I call The Beverly Hillbillies era of TV. People like my parents were into that kind of campiness of the Batman series. Serious detective show dramas for audiences of that era were popular, yes, but the serious kind where the hero wore a mask, that was to far fetched for them. The camp made Batman more adult watchable.
However I have often wondered if I had a time machine and a mysterious way to air a show, how Eric Radomski and Bruce Timm's Batman The Animated Series would go over as a night time cartoon in the 60's. They had a few late evening cartoon's during that time and that's the time slot the Flintstones and Johnny Quest first started. So I still wonder what would happen if TBAS had been shown in that time period.🤔
Seth Rogan did the movie no favors but even with anyone else in the role as a spoiled, arrogant buffoon, it still would have failed.

Wow. I did not know Kung Fu's Keye Luke(who played Kato in the 1940's Green Hornet serial. Imagine a fight between Master Po in the prime of his youth versus Bruce Lee in his prime. THAT would indeed be epic.

Ofcourse, that was only part of it. Also, I was there, people expected it to be campy like Batman. Especially after seeing the crossover. But I also remember complaining that we couldn't see anything on my uncles B/W TV with the rabbit ears. I was just trying to keep my reply down to four lines. We didn't get our big color TV until 1968.

Burt Ward was not a Black Belt. That was pure bunk. There was an article in Black Belt Magazine showing Ward getting trained so he could do some martial arts moves. He had on a yellow belt. That’s one up from white belt.
One magazine article does not a complete story make. There are multitudes are articles affirming Burt Ward was indeed a Black Belt for certain. Your one magazine article is insufficient proof of the position you hold.
"THE LONE RANGER" and "THE GREEN HORNET" didn't just DEBUT on WXYZ-Detroit, it was originated and produced in Detroit!
The Lone Ranger was featured in two movie serials long before Clayton Moore donned the mask.The first starring Lee Powell was pre World War II and when Powell was killed in action, the role was played by Bob Livingston. Livingston's Return Of The Lone Ranger was the model for the Clayton Moore TV series and movies. His costume and mask were carried over into the TV series with minimal changes over the years.

The title of your video is misleading. Ir should be. Why BRUCE LEE Walked Off The Set Of BATMAN. One major reason The Green Honet failed as a series is because the public knew it was made by the same production company that made Batmsn and they were expecting a comedy, not a crime drama and the cross over epidode confused the audiece as to what the show was supposed to bw.
The main reason the GH tv series was can canceled was because the Producer William Dozier wanted the show to be 60 minutes instead of 30 minutes. The ABC network was going to continue with the show but only in a 30 minute time slot so Dozier canceled the show. The man who gave us the show took it away due to wanting to have his way over the network! That was the reason it was canceled! Not due to low ratings.

@@gerrydooley951 Not due to low ratings. The network was going to have a second season but only for a half hour and it was Dozier who canceled the show because he wanted an hour or nothing so he/we got nothing. We could of and should of had a second season. At least one more season.
@@vicmartinoofficial331 Sorry Mr. Vic you're wrong the ratings were dismal, in the 80's out of approx. 100 shows. It wasn't even winning it's time slot. Two books talk about this: Martain Grams History of the Green Hornet and Billie Rae Bates' Let's Roll Kato. I love the show but Batman killed the idea of a serious , masked crime-fighter. The kids ignored it.
The Kato Show is right. Van Williams was a good, solid actor who made The Green Hornet credible, but without Bruce Lee, there would be no interest at all in this series today.
I think that's a bit harsh. I love Bruce Lee but I think his casting made it the Bruce Lee Show instead of the green hornet and that's a huge issue. Of course, the producers had no idea what was going to happen. Van was fine but a more charismatic lead, John Saxon comes to mind or maybe Chuck Connors. It kind of reminds me of the issues with the Mr. Lucky TV series. Again, John Vyvian was okay but Ross Martin just ran away with it. Both show are uneven and ran one season which isn't a surprise.

Keye Luke who portrayed Ikano Kato in the Universal Serials was the old Asian man in Gremlins....he also voiced Han in Enter the Dragon.....in the Tales of the Green Hornet....Kato pretended to be Filipino and Chinese at the request of the Reid's so as to avoid the Internment Camps as Ikano Kato was Japanese.....Ikano the Father was the 1st Kato....Hayashi the first born was the 2nd Kato which was portrayed by Bruce Lee....and 2 brothers followed...Hatami and Kumara....

I never cared for "The Green Hornet". I thought it was boring, and lacked the spirit that "Batman" had. I could never wrap my head around the fact that a car could hang upside down on a revolving platform and still run normally. The oil would not only leak out, but also foul every single spark plug in the engines of both cars!
All the kids on my block liked the show. Too bad it didn’t last longer. Piece of the action was my favorite Batman episode
I had been exposed to Asian martial arts before The Green Hornet, so when I first watched it as a 12-year old I became a huge Bruce Lee fan. I realized early on that the writing for most of the episodes was iffy and ABC had placed it on Friday night, so the poor ratings were not a surprise and I was sad to learn it was cancelled after only one season. ABC should have placed it before or after Batman and made it a two-night show as well. Fortunately, Bruce got a few episode stint on another series called Longstreet before heading back to Hong Kong and becoming a huge star there.
Studios really need to make this a movie that is on par with Marvel. Marvel should make it. A good twist would be a biracial nephew of Bass Reeves. I could write it. Lol. Set it the late 60's into the future. Now driving a Chrysler 300 S . I got the perfect story. Who wants to get in on this. $$$$$$$$

I maybe watched a couple of episodes of this show, but clearly followed the exploits of 'Batman'. It could have been 'Green Hornet' aired later at night....past my bedtime. Or I've always thought of it as part of the film noir genre. To this day.....I've never really been into that sort of movie.

Both the Lone Ranger & Green Hornet movies in the 2000's were pure shit.
I was young when those shows were on TV in reruns. I remember that as a young kid, I found the GH story in each episode kind of hard to follow.

I always wondered who built his car and gadgets. Who built the garage and who designed the Hornet Sting? Same goes for Batman and his nuclear reactor down in the Batcave. He sure didn't do it by himself with Alfred.

No, you are not alone. When I was a kid in 1966, which shows my age, I couldn't get Batman on my tv because the area I lived had only one channel. So I heard so much about Batman from another kid in the trailer park we lived in, I just couldn't wait to see it. Finally at my Grandmother's house I got to see it. Sooo disappointed with the BIFFS and the POWS and the camp. I was actually expecting something more serious. That same summer I saw this show called the Green Hornet that I knew nothing about. This show was what I wanted to see in Batman. A more serious tone.
As an adult, I kind of appreciate the humor in Batman, but you are right, The Green Hornet is way better.

As popular as that show was. as I kid I joined in liking that show for the first three shows but I still felt it lacked in convencing me that it took place in the future, but that's another story. In that same summer of 1966 I discovered my disappointment in Batman, found an even better show The Green Hornet and even another show that same summer when that night this Star Ship came toward me and a friend who was spending the night with me said in excitement, Star Trek!!! I said, "What is Star Trek."
I found this was the show that made me feel like I was in the future. That summer of 66 I discovered both Green Hornet and Star Trek which I never knew existed.
I could take The Green Hornet more seriously than Batman. Their clothes were normal, more realistic, unlike Batman and Robin's costumes. Also the series was great for Bruce Lee. It's a pity the later movie was not so good. I keep hoping for a new and better movie to be made, or maybe a new TV series, as long as it's good, unlike some of the TV series they make these days.

The way I see it Robin can't fight anyway. Batman knocks out three guys then he have to help Robin out. I agree with Bruce Lee, there is no way Robin can beat Kato. Robin just can't fight. Comic books yes on screen no.
One of the big debates during that time what was the better car, Black Beauty or the Batmobile. The Batmobile usually won.
The Black Beauty was just a Continental where the Batmobile was a concept car that was never produced. I picked up a book way back when called "Dream Cars" that had all the futuristic concept cars of the time and ran across the Lincoln Futura. It's instantly recognized as the Batmobile even without the modifications.
Robin would not even last a fraction of a second against Bruce Lee neither would Steven Seagal or Michael J White!

the GH show wasn't was as well written as the Batman show and People were slowly getting burned out on the Batman show, So it was obvious that the GH would DIE!

No other person could've played Kato at that time. That role was made for Bruce.
Other than Bruce Lee the Black Beauty and the theme song is what also made the show such a hit

The co-creator of the Lone Ranger was FRAN Striker (short for Francis) and unlike Francis Albert “Frank” Sinatra, Striker didn’t like the name ‘Frank’. So he went by FRAN. Also, George W. Trendle used classical music on BOTH The Green Hornet and The Lone Ranger on Radio Station WXYZ Detroitbecause it was all PUBLIC DOMAIN. That meant they didn’t have to pay anyone any royalties for the music. Trendle was no dummy. A few years later, when the Federal Communications Commission told NBC they couldn’t operate TWO separate Radio Networks (the NBC Red and NBC Blue Networks), the FCC told them they had to divest themselves of one of those two Networks. Without looking it up, I don’t remember whether it was the NBC Red or NBC Blue Network they sold. But whichever one it was, THAT Network became ABC, The American Broadcasting Company, which ended up buying WXYZ. At that point, both The Green Hornet and The Lone Ranger went national, and were no longer just in the Detroit market. But even though they were heard Coast-To-Coast, they were still produced in Detroit at WXYZ, unlike most Network radio, which for the most part, was done in New York or Los Angeles.

My friend's six year old told me he liked Batman because Batman and Robin and all the villains were more colorful than the Green Hornet and Kato. He told me that bad guys dressed in suites and ties was very boring. Lol!!!! Batman appealed to a much younger audience!!!

When I was a kid, I had trouble pronouncing some words so when I tried to say the name of the car it always came out as “the Black Booty.” Obviously that caused some issues, lol.

I have the movie serials. They're great! You have to be really careful when it comes to getting episodes of the 1960s Green Hornet. I have a DVD that is just a lot of clips of the show put together. It is a ripoff. There is also a Robin Hood DVD that is just a bunch of clips and so is also a ripoff. Youi really have to be careful. I would love genuine 1960s Green Hornet episodes and not ruddy clips. I remember liking The Green Hornet 1960s TV show. I remember loving the gimmicks.
I think more people saw the Green Hornet on an episode of Batman than when he appeared in his own Series. The Green Hornet took itself way too seriously, That's why it never caught on. Batman had more kid appeal, and way more Merchandise.
We were banned from fighting like Bruce Lee on the school yard.
I wouldn't say that the movie did any justice to the green hornet and it's best forgotten.

I loved The Green Hornet the reason why it didn't last because it wasn't Batman & it's campiness The Green Hornet played it straight right from the radio series plus Bruce Lee was great as Kato but the producers kept him under control but Van Williams suggested to the producers to let Lee branch out & do his thing & I don't blame Bruce Lee to walk out on that episode where he was supposed to lose to Robin....PLEASE & Van Williams agreed with Bruce so the producers had no choice to declare it a tie but Kato kicked Robin's ass.
Kato was the baddest dude he could whup up Batman Robin and Superman Kato could keep the crap out of everyone but the guy greenhorn wasn’t a fighter people my age should know that 👌

Seth Rogan as the Green Hornet, as well as the Johnny Depp Lone Ranger movie were both big kicks in the nuts to the creator's memory. Even when done by different studios, they revolved around the same idea: glorify the sidekick and ridicule the main character.
