- Jay Killeen Sempai and Andrew Kerridge Skinner Sempai from Brisbane Goju Karate (www.brisbanegoj...) sparring at the Goju Ryu Karate do Seiwakai End of Year Kumite in the Park AKA End of Year Bash.
This was the first in ~25 rounds of kumite held in Brisbane, Australia between karate ka and other martial arts students across Brisbane.
I like the minimal sparring gear. It also looks like these guys have really good control.
Hi blackiel89. The speed of the kumite isn't linked to the style, more the event. If you are going out for a 10 kilometre run there is no point sprinting, you just won't finish. So we pace ourselves for this day as it is sometimes over 2 hours of kumite. In saying that, some rounds are challenging as the person is a higher rank, or your brother or friend so you pick up the intensity, for some other rounds it is a yellow belt so you teach them. Sort of like a long run with hills up and down.
This is very good sparring!
This is the karate I like. It looks quite similar to my style of karate. I never practiced the sparring outside before. It looks like so much fun.
Osu, I loved the way you park spa or dojo spar. This is the only way to learn and teach without beating the hell out of one another.
Exactly. We've all gotta go to work in the morning 👍😎
Hi Roosevelt Pina. Tricky to answer that question. A bit of common sense is required for this day. For one it is an end of year event so we go into it knowing that the next 30 rounds (around 2 hours of kumite) will be challenging so no point ruining someone's day, or their Christmas holidays by giving them a busted up face. We do hit hard, we are just all conditioned to being hit hard so it isn't that noticeable. You pick your spots though, no point breaking someone in the first 30 seconds.
This is a good philosophy, great video, very similar to our dojo's (Goju Ryu) sparring. If i'm ever in SE QLD again, i'll come and find ya 👍🥋
Wow. Excellent technique and control... Some of the best sparring I've seen in a while. Would hate to be up against either of them moving at full speed.
Thanks for your comment kudols. Do you also train in Goju Ryu Karate?
Brisbane Goju Karate I train in Uechi Ryu, definitely have respect for the Goju Ryu style though!
You gotta love an early morning session in the park. Great for takedowns. Most of us have our 'bash day gi' as they get pretty dirty over the years. Or ripped as you will see by our Shihan's gi in some of the other videos.
This is enjoyable to watch. Its relaxed sparring, controlled, but still the need for good defence (jodan especially).
We all get better with training and time. A black belt is just a white belt that never gave up. Good luck with your improvement.
Yes Sempai Andrew and Sempai Jay have been best friends for a long time which is great for the intensity it brings. Sempai Jay also has an older brother that trains too so the "Little brother beats big brother into submission" video is next ;)
Thanks @WarriorBoy glad you enjoyed it. Sempai Andrew and Jay are fortunate that they started training around the same time (being best mates and all) and are pretty on pair with each other in skill. Great for spectators!
this is real karate i been looking for
thats why thers is head gear and gloves
Sparing is so fun I'm blue with black stripe testing for much purple
The last shot of the fight was a good nut punt. Funny how that stuff works out. Guy who was winning most everything walks away with the most pain, to his balls.
I'd wonder if you'd be saying that after a jab, cross, roundhouse to the head?
I do understand that this is practice and no one was intended to go full force or full speed and all. This is good training, in my opinion, for taking hits, and fighting the fear of getting hit, especially for beginners. But i can clearly see many blackbelts. Was this in Australia?
Yes, pretty sure it's in the Brisbane, se Queensland, area.
I cant say I have ever heard of Shino Ryu. I have seen Shinto Ryu which is more a swordsmanship martial art (so not very practical in self defence situations :). All I can say is that Goju Ryu is part of the 4 styles of Japanese Karatedo Federation approved karate styles. Ideally, I would suggest you try both styles. The instructor that teaches you has a greater bearing on the end result of the martial artist. So I would seek out the best instructor that you can find. Good Luck!
That is an interesting concept MrDeathCab1. It might be a good way of practicing training drills for speed and agility. Not very practical for Goju Ryu though as our style tends to lend itself to absorbing blows and counter attacking.
Nice ...relaxed...easy over..
Glad you got something out of it @fadelounge37. The key is maintaining fluidity while still having strength and speed. We sometimes get feedback that our kumite is slow compared to what you would see in the sports karate. We are firm believers that power is a function of speed and strength and that your ability to be versatile through this spectrum while still being in control will assist you in having good effective kumite.
Father of Kyokushin
These two have been going at it since childhood haha. They are always the best rounds to watch when they are very good friends or family ;)
Gotta Luv Goju Ryu Karate...Those Cats Were Sharp!! Osu!*
Some great mawashis there, the yoko/ushiro at 2.09 was a solid one too 👍🙌
G'Day FunkyDrunkMonk. I am glad that you noticed that. Yes we probably do have a higher guard than most. "Hands up" is a mantra at our dojo as we have some very heavy hitters and, speaking from experience, some us find it better to take something to the body then risk taking it to the jaw. There is a trade-off in exposing our ribs so we tend to float between defending the rib cage with sanchin style, elbows in etc, and defending the head. But yes, it is a personal thing to deal with heavy shots
@blackie89 There are a few factors here. A end of year bash we fight for around 30 rounds, so 'pacing' yourself has its benefits. If this was a 90 sec round as you would see in the kyokushin circuits then yes we would be faster. In saying that, there is a speed and strength spectrum so slow does not always mean "soft". It all depends on the instructor. Id say give it a try. Let us know how you go aswell.
The defense on this sparring is amazing.
Does this Karate style have spinning back kicks?
Yeh but most people in goju ryu schools get taught how to defend it
Well , but where is goju ruy karate.
I like how "best friends" is included in the title.
Hey this was really good! Some great techniques in here, thanks for sharing this.
this was inspirational. We always tend to go in to fast for our experience and it ends up being rather sluggish or aking noses :) This speed is the way to go!
Looks good though I cringe a little at the open hands- we are continually drilled to keep closed fists in our school )Wado Ryu) because it avoids broken fingers which happened to me when I tried to redirect a kick with an open hand. Ouch.
David Coscina I understand the point you’re making and I would say it’s true for junior grades. However, senior black belts often fight hands open. Why? Well firstly when people are relaxed their fists are less likely to be clenched. You close the hand as you deliver your strike. Secondly, open hands allow you to grab a little more effectively. My final point is that as you become more advanced your timing becomes far better. I’ve been doing karate over 30 years and I can’t remember the last time I hurt a finger during sparring. When I was a KYU grade or every a junior DAN I’d often hurt my fingers. Many senior kata have lots of open hands. Have a good day 😊
Hi FlipadieFlip Now I like that quote! Excellent!
very nice, I'm new to karate my dad just said i can do karate. so im happy but what is the difference between shino ryu and gojo ryu? Were i live you can sign up for both.

children's fight
This is very nice but i still Prefer Machida style. Ever hit you take is like getting cut by a sword. the less hits taken the less cuts you have received. Metaphorically
soft
