- After 6 months of using the Apple Studio Display, I've experienced some annoyances. But even with those flaws, for some strange reason I still love using the Apple Studio Display. In this video, I go over 6 and a half annoyances, and then I talk about some of the positives of the Apple Studio Display and an alternative monitor,

Great Video. When I shut down my Mac mini from the Apple Studio Display both are off. I just goto Apple > Shut down...or I put them to sleep...you can also use your "4 corners" on the Apple Display. I do not have to unplug anything...
Thanks 🙏 OMG!! Genius! Why didn't I think of that!! I'm so used to putting my Mac to sleep by just closing the lid on the MacBook. I forget there is a "Sleep" option via Apple > Sleep menu option 🤦♂️ Thanks for sharing!
@@ChuenL Besides putting the entire system to sleep, you can just put the display to sleep. Look in the System Preferences for setting up a corner in which to park the pointer to do that.
The problem with sleep mode makes the screen power the MacBook all the time
One of, if not the most underrated reviewer of tech on youtube. Always choose to waych these videos over others.
Clean editing, crisp audio, and no over hype or jargon to extend the video length. Keep it up
Appreciate the kind words 🙏
Nice review! I've had mine for nearly a year, and with the vesa mount version which I have no regrets over as it's so versatile. I can never get over how beautiful the display is, especially if I go to use any of my other displays for my pc's, that weren't cheap either. It's just super sharp with great colours.
Can you explain which adapter to get for the Apple Display for use with say a Raspi? I can't figure out what you are thinking about... ?
So surprised we don’t see more tech RUclipsrs using the Blue Sona! Such an awesome mic. I have one in white for my podcast. Props to you and great video
Thanks! I think it’s a fantastic mic as well. Have the Shure MV7 and always find myself using the Blue Sona.
Your sound design is crazy. Very enjoyable watch!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it!
Do you recommend the nano texture glass?
Great looks with the application Better Display. It's the best I've used so far & I've used a couple. Reminds me of imho the best tool for Mac, being Better Touch Tool
Thanks, great review
About disconnecting the display, I believe that if you put the laptop on sleeping mode it will shutdown the displays after a few seconds
thank you! well balanced review🙏
if you press esc on the Lock Screen you can immediately shut off your display - ctrl+cmd+q to lock your screen, esc to turn off display.
One of the best reviews I’ve seen for the Apple Studio Display. I’ve been teetering on buying one of these for a while but this really helped put it in perspective - given all the niggles you mention that price really is absurd. Even for Apple. A shame Samsung didn’t price the M9 more aggressively as they could have cleaned up with that release.
Thanks! Appreciate the kind words. Totally agree - Samsung could have been way more competitive on price
You can turn off center stage - on macOS sonoma (at least for me)
Thanks for the great review Chuen! I've been debating between switching over from my Eve Spectrum 4K 144hz for the brightness, contrast, and resolution, but I think I'll stay put til Apple releases Pro Motion on their device. Side question... could you share where you got your shelf stand from at 2:05? It's perfect for me to display my model cars. Cheers.
Hey! I was pretty close to pulling the trigger on the Eve Spectrum 4K monitor too. I think its a pretty decent monitor. Do you mean the oak wood shelf stand? If so, I got them from www.futoncompany.co.uk/ Its a leaning ladder shelf.
Hello. What utility do you use to show the SoC temperature in the status bar?
Can you comment on how practical the studio display is for this presumably common use case: connected to Mac Mini as main computer, but also switching to a windows work laptop to do some work from home connecting via thunderbolt 3. Presumably the work laptop will not have admin rights to install or run third party software.
Depends on whether the work laptop has thunderbolt (or usb-c 3.2) or not. I'd suggest buying one from a store that has a good return policy. There are alternatives if the laptop only has a displayport output (or you want to use it with a PC desktop) - like the Level 1 "USB-C combiner" or the belkin CAZ001 cable.
Where'd you get that plant and vase? is it real? Would want that on my desk too. lol
This creator and channel deserves far more subs... excellent quality content. Sub'd.
Thank you 🙏 Appreciate the support.
It is very simple. Please try to darken the display or changing some other setting on a non apple display... You have a good camera inside, 3 mics and 6 speakers too and 5k resolution... Maybe not perfect but the best all in one solution you can get.
Great video. Thank you.
Excellent.Thank you.
Interesting video - thanks! In Europe, the base price ( Tilt only ) is the equivalent of one thousand and nine hundred dollars.
The 'Tilt and Height' adjust equivalent is two thousand and three-fifty dollars. ( without any nano-texturing )
If you kept it for a decade... that's a little over one hundred and eighty dollars a year.
It's just the iMac Pro screen, who's housing has been seriously 'over-designed'. The price point should be a thousand dollars.
The eternal conundrum for Apple, sell low and lots of units or just sell extortionately high?
Thank you for the advice
Do you need to calibrate it?
Thanks for the review. I'm thinking of getting one and I does the display gets warm or hot after a long period of usage?
I haven't noticed it getting hot. I use the display, 9-5, 5 or 6 days a week and not experienced any heat. But I suppose it will depend where it is located. If it's somewhere where it's got direct sunlight all day, or located near a heater, then it may get warm or hot.
I agree with Chuen.
I also use mine 9-5 and I haven’t noticed it getting warm. I’ve had mine since last December and I strongly reccomend it.
well said I have one and love it
About turning the display off. Just connect the display to a branch outlet with on/off button. Place it conveniently underneath your desk and use that button.
I just press the fingerprint button on my keyboard and it all goes to sleep. I dont see the need to have a physical off button.
only one input port is a massive deal breaker for me. Also I’m sick of apple’s obsession with not providing a way to turn off a device, same thing on the AirPods Max
Why you disconnect the thunderbolt cable from Apple Studio in the case of mac mini o mac studio? You can shut down the mac mini or mac studio and is enough
You can put the computer to sleep - it shuts off the display. Or am I missing something?
Nope, you're absolutely right. It just didn't occur to me as I was looking for a hardware switch as opposed to a software switch.
I bought a Studio Display (Standard w/ tilt mount) at Best Buy for $1299 (President's Day Sale). It's still in the box, because I'm waiting for my new desk to come in from Amazon, so I can hardly wait to use it. I've tried three different 4K monitors (2 Dell and 1 Innocn), before deciding on the Studio Display and the other ones made my eyes hurt. From what I hear, the Studio Display is going to have the superior picture and quality. YEAH!!
I went with a pair on my M2 studio ultra.
there seem to be two fans in side the screen. Is it ever activly cooled, does it make any, being it even a very low, noise?
I haven't experienced any fan noises. Not yet anyway. I use the display for work, 8:30am-6:30pm or even later and no fan noises at all
Same here! No noise at all!
The way I see it, that much like my Cinema Display from 2011 that I'm *still* using as my secondary monitor, I'm going to be owning my current Studio Display for at least 10 years. Great build quality, unmatched image quality and tight integration with MacOS made it a no-brainer for me. Also, just FYI that the keyboard shortcut to turn off your monitor is Ctrl + Shift + Eject. You're welcome 😉
Excellent review. Objective, well presented, informative.
I share many of your feelings about the Studio display and I am very happy with it.
One thing you didn’t mention about the new Samsung is that it’s plastic instead of aluminum. For similar pricing I find that ridiculous.
I just subscribed. Your reviews kick ass!
If I connect a macbook pro 14 m3 pro with promotion, will the studio display output with promotion?
No , the refresh rate on Studio Display is capped at 60 hz
On point!
I love this thing. I hate the price But I love it, I would say get the vesa mount
love your comments....i am looking at this ....hopefully will buy as soon as i can sell one of my children 😅😅😅
The sound on My Studio disply is awful, does not work {reboot it will come back} when it does the sounds is not good--hate that I spent the money
Are you at all bothered by the 60hz screen? Allegedly it can be felt, compared to the 120hz of the macbook pro. What do you think?
Depends on the individual. One of the reasons I returned mine was because of this.
Furthermore, I got used to previously using a 32 inch monitor constantly. Hopefully Apple will make a 5k 32 inch monitor 120hz one day.
Having said that, if your vision is good, and 60hz doesn't bother you, it's a great monitor in all regards.
No monitor should be sold today, with at least a refresh rate of 80-120 Hz.
Is the nice wallpaper you are using somewhere available?
Hello!, yes it is: ko-fi.com/s/cfcd51f6a4
cool, thanks
I had one for two weeks an returned it when it first came out. It is indeed a lovely display but it just isn't as good as the ProMotion MiniLED display in the MacBook Pro 16 I have connected to it and that just sucked for me. When I can buy an Apple monitor that has the same 120Hz ProMotion MiniLED panel as is in the MacBook Pro I will. I don't need (nor want) the 6K dual-layer LCD Pro Display XDR stuff, just the same spec as the MacBook Pro display and I will be happy to put down the €1500 or so for it. But no way am I paying €1500 for a 7 year old 60Hz 500nits 5K LG panel in a fancy new monitor housing in 2023 sorry.
Agree, I'll wait for the next version for that reasons
I couldn’t agree more, unfortunately, as a designer I need something that works with my Mac and this is the best option. I just wish they had mini led with 4000 dimming zones of the bat.
This comment convinced me
No way you’re getting a 27” 5K MiniLed 120Hz for 1500€. It just won’t happen
@@MattiaRighetti Yeah more likely to be an OLED in a year or two rather than MiniLED but oh well I am okay with that as I've had an OLED TV for over 5 years with no issue.
There are nice 4K OLED monitors out today around €1600 just a bit bigger than I would like. Hopefully by 2025 we see something in the 27-32" range that offers 5K as they already offer 120+Hz refresh rates obviously.
Hi i read online the arm can be switched by apple in store, is this true ?
I read that too. Can't confirm if it's true or not. Only way to confirm is to contact Apple support
@@ChuenL I actually called they told me no. Just not sure if people working there are aware of this.
if you showdown Mac mini or MacBook Pro the display switch off too. you dont need a physical button to switch on and off
I used to be able to get a computer and monitor for $1500 (Imac)... and now it's that much for just for the monitor
It would be nice if the next Apple Studio Display has 120Hz or 144Hz
How about using MacOS to put the monitor asleep. It isn’t necessary to go to all this trouble to turn off the display.
Update 1, My Studio Display blew up yesterday, belching smoke for 6 minutes before a final loud bang. Only lasted 18 months, very scary failure and I did get it on video. Posted pictures of the failure on my community tab and what to look out for before this failure. I can't post a video because I now have no display. Update 2 Initial Investigations are pointing at the slim internal power supply thats failed, the left hand side section when looking at the display. The staff at the Apple store have seen all my videos of the failure and they were astonished, looked over the Display with a fine tooth comb but never opened it up. They could see from the video it's a destroyed unit and unrepairable. I purchased it from Apple 18 months ago and I'm in the refund process. Sadly that refund process isn't as automatic as it should be. And what's wild is they didn't keep the very damaged Studio Display. I'm the proud owner of a bricked, burnt out Studio Display. And anyone saying this is BS are just plain stupid.
BS
The only thing that is stopping me from buying it is not the price, it’s the screen size, they should have made it at least 32 instead of 27
Well, I wish I could afford one! Seems a very desirable monitor to me!
$1,359.00 for a color accurate screen + Tight integration with Mac. It's a joy to look at. I wish it has 144hz though....
Almost any monitor above $400, will be color accurate, at least if its a monitor meant for color critical work.
No on/off button 😮
Control + Shift + Eject will turn off your monitor
The Studio Display is intended to be compared with a Mac only. So, to have all the Controls on the Keyboard of the connected Mac, is great. Much better, than to need control over Buttons on the Back or Side of the Monitor. This isn't an Issue, this is just perfect Engineering.
The Cable is changeable but you don't need it to replace. Or did you in the past 15 Years change just one single Power Cord of any Monitor? I don't think so.
The Price is just right, in my Opinion. Compare it to any other 5K Monitor side by side and you will see any Difference, that make it worth the small extra Money.
İnş birgün alacam
Amin
You forgot one thing, it isn't compatible with most toasters....
Anything that outrageously expensive that needs several hundred more in options is a scam.
It is fundamentally overpriced, it exists to make the mac studio seem cheaper.
27 inch IPS 60hz 5k, for nearly twice the price of a 42 inch OLED 120hz 4k.
Like $1,000 over priced
Overpriced junk, sorry. Ancient display tech for a super inflated price. At minimum it need to have more then 60 hz and mini led!
Despite the robust and attractive outer construction of this and other Apple products. The internals often are sadly lacking in quality and layout. They are also difficult to repair, requiring replacement boards instead of individual components. Apple have tight control over their distribution which puts third party repair shops out of the loop. Their are equally cheaper and desirable monitors out their that have more features and easier to repair. Also, less than 10 percent of computer users in the world use Apple products so the software is limited. Apple products are way overpriced as well and for those reasons, I would never touch one. The one successful product that largely props them up is of course the Iphone. Without that, Apple would be a much lesser company.
the Apple Studio Display is a waste of money
