Great Video, the bottom line is a great lens for An Atypical Use Case. the lens was build for bright light and especially people that shoot on cold and even snowy conditions. The lens like most Zoom lenses is very prone to any heat distortion. Shoot in bright conditions, at close distance with cool temperatures or over water, great results. If you do not mind noise, then it works fine in low light conditions. Unfortunately, Fuji does not offer an alternative to f8, like a prime lens of some sorts except the f2 200mm lens, expensive and way to short. Tamron offer a fantastic 150-500 at f6.7already an improvement.
Go shoot some video with the XF150-600 it’s a surprisingly great video lens. I caught our swans just as they hatched some cygnets earlier this year with it. Beautiful image
Been a Canon shooter for 20 years, have an R6 with an R7 on order. Then the put a stop to third party lenses. Cancelled the R7 and am looking at either the X-H2S or OM-1 for distant wildlife.
Thanks Hugh. I have the X-T5 w/ 100-400 Fujinon. Which by the way is a great lens. I just ordered the 150-600 for more reach for birds. Glad you like it. I value your opinion. Happy and healthy holidays to you both.
Have you found an honest, reliable review/video that does a proper side-by-side, comparison of the raf files from the 2 lenses? I.e. 150-600 & 100-400 (pref with the 1.4x t/c). The only 'comparison' video I've seen was ridiculously biased against the 100-400.
"...raises more questions than answers". Apologies for not holding that thought, but Sony's own FE 200-600 f5.6-6.3 is 1/10" longer, 4/10" larger diameter, and 1.15 lbs heavier. Price is the same as the Fujifilm competitor. But the Sony lens is full frame AND 2/3 stop faster. With the recent FX30 release, along with a few lens releases prior, we know Sony hasn't abandoned APS-C - at least not for video. The A7R V kept the same 61 MP FF / 26 MP in crop mode sensor as it's predecessor. So, will Sony release a more photo centric, higher pixel density APS-C camera in the coming year to answer the R7 and X-H2? If such a camera materializes, how will it pair with the exiting FE 200-600? Have a crystal ball handy?
That is what keep me waiting now when i really to put money down for z9, xh2s or even xh2. Maybe i will buy xh2 to play with until sony come out something.
Looking into the zoom as well now but using the XH2S. 😅 Still sometimes I wished I had chosen the XH2 but when I am in the field and can rely on AF, I quickly forget again.
Fuji provides a great alternative to full frame camera systems in terms of weight, size and cost. They should’ve opened the lens mount years ago and they would’ve been much wealthier and able to spend more on R&D and updating the AF system and lens line up.
A very interesting video however as a Sony, fujifilm and Olympus user I think the real competition is an om-1 with the stellar 150-400mm Olympus lens. In everyday use it smokes both the A1 for weight and price and the Fuji on aperture IS and weight, I say this having tried all the combinations and still using Sony and Fuji actively.
The pixel count is a fair point given the typical usage, of which I guess birds in flight would be the most stressing, as it allows more cropping but at the equivalent aperture the built in teleconvertor on the Olympus gives ff equivalent of 1000mm although I have to say I rarely use this as it’s actually too long a focal length for what I like to image. Overall we are just soo lucky to have such a range of Amazingl kit to choose from from. The quality is just remarkable
@@3BMEP Scratch that argument with double the pixels. I have seen too many credible side by side comparisons of the older XT3 with its 26MP outperforming the new 40MP sensor in terms of fine detail resolution. This new 40MP sensor does not render more fine detail than the 26MP sensor, even when using high performing lenses recommended by Fuji for the new sensor. I was about to ask you if you did side by side tests on this as well already, Hugh. I am certain you will find the assumption that the new 40MP sensor provides higher resolution to be a bit of a scam really. That said, even when assuming the 40MP would actually allow a linear improvement of fine detail resolution as the pixel count merely suggests, the real world difference between a 20MP and 40MP file for print would be basically irrelevant.

What will be different if we shoot two cameras with identical lenses, one APS C and one FF with an identical exposure triangle. Say, for instance: f/4, 1/250th second and ISO 200? Will the smaller sensor result in "two stops darker exposure" as you claim in the video? No! Of course not! Which is arguably true. But there is no difference in the light gathering capability between an f/4 full frame lens and an f/4 APS lens. You can prove this easily with most of the Sony a7 cameras which have an APS-C mode. If you take a picture in FF mode, and then switch to APS mode the pictures will be exposed identically.
