- In this video, we discuss one of the major revolutions that transformed psychotherapy, or psychoanalysis, which is about working through childhood pain in the context of the therapeutic relationship called SELF PSYCHOLOGY, as innovated by psychoanalyst Heinz Kohut (1913-1981). Part I
Dr. Doug is a psychotherapist with 30 years of experience working as a Marriage and Family Therapist and also as a professor at Antioch University where he founded the nation’s first LGBT Specialization in Clinical Psychology and also Colors LGBTQ Youth Counseling Center in 2005 and 2010 respectively. He is also an award-winning journalist and author of two books, Sacred Lips of the Bronx and Sex Between Men: An Intimate History of the Sex Lives Postwar to Present. He is giving a monthly free talk as part of a “Community Psychology in Depth” Series at the Antioch University Library the first Wednesday of Every month.

Do you think it is possible to study and benefit from Kohut's 'self psychology' within the parameters of self guided study? I mean finding resolution for the lack of mirroring and idealising in childhood through self governed study of self psychology as opposed to having the 'needs' being enacted as you described in a patient / therapist relationship?
just currently studying this and this great video really made it clear.
