I give it an 10. Though the Protector does get a lot of flack and though it's not Jackie's best work, it was still entertaining and chock full of action. Remember staying up late to watch this on TBS and TNT when it came on and the stunts and fight scenes kept me on the edge of my seat. The massage parlour battle and this fight in the warehouse were two of my favorite action scenes (plus the chase through the boats on Hong Kong harbor was exhilarating too).
I don't know, this just doesn't hold up for me. Unlike most of his other movies, Jackie really looks like he's pulling his punches and kicks. Great to see Bill Wallace, but you can tell he's really taking it easy himself and just doing it more for hamming it up. I'd give it a 5 or 6.
Jackie chan in this movie is so wild with his dialogues. I just watched it and it doesn't feel like Jackie Chan movie but man Jackie swearing in this movie is wild😂
I'm surprised Jackie let so much sloppiness pass on these fight scenes, considering he was a perfectionist. Granted, this was an early film. Still enjoyable nonetheless. 👍

This film was actually Jackie's 2nd attempt to break into the American audience film market. Unfortunately, it was a co-production with an American director at the helm and he didn't think much of Jackie's skills and experience as a fight director and thought he knew how to shoot and edit a fight scene better than Jackie for the American audiences. So he showed this film with his cuts and edited version and it flopped at the American box office. Meanwhile, Jackie edited and re-shot some scenes and released it for the Asian version and it became a hit internationally including in Europe. I saw both versions and the Asian version had better pacing and more of the Jackie Chan style flavor that we grew to love. You can actually see a comparison of the American and Asian cuts of the fight scenes here on YT.
@@johnlloyddy7016 if you see a picture with Jackie smiling in front of the protector poster at the premiere he said he may be smiling but he was screaming on the inside lol he got so pissed he didn't make a other American movie until rush hour
This is from _The Protector,_ the last of four American movies that Golden Harvest were producing to try and break Jackie into the American market (some sources say second but Golden Harvest had also put him into _The Cannonball Run_ and _Cannonball Run II_ as well as _Battle Creek Brawl_ prior to this). None of them had this effect (even though _The Cannonball Run_ was successful Jackie just couldn't stand out amongst the all-star Western cast, especially as his part was so small), whilst in the case of _The Protector_ Jackie didn't get along with director James Glickenhaus and vehemently disapproved of being cast against type as well as the level of violence, swearing and nudity in it, so much so that Jackie (without permission from Glickenhaus) did a tweaked version removing much of this objectionable content, reshooting the fight with Bill Wallace (although some bits were lifted from the American version), adding some other bits and adding an additional subplot; this version was specifically for the Asian market and was slightly better received than the original. However, without _The Protector,_ there would have been no _Police Story,_ so that's one good thing to come of his experience making it.
Unpopular opinion: Superfoot Wallace's style didn't translate well to action cinema disite in ring PKA effectiveness. Ugly and flailing 🤷. The Protector wasn't popular because they had to dumb down the action for American viewers.
After _The Protector_ wrapped Jackie did his own edit of _The Protector_ that was more geared towards his fans in Asia. He added some additional scenes, reshot much of the fight between him and Bill "Superfoot" Wallace and removed the stronger profanities and the nudity, which he thought was gratuitous. James Glickenhaus was not happy with this re-edited, tweaked version, insisting that he had final-cut privilege on the original version and that the kind of action that was in Hong Kong movies didn't stand a chance in America at the time. One good thing from the experience of making _The Protector_ is that it inspired Jackie to do his own police movie his way: the result was _Police Story._
I fought 6 guys in Palmyra Columbia and won , I'm a expert at Taekwondo and I attacked first I was never touched. Took 30 minutes to come down from the adrenaline. it took about 3 seconds . all jump kicks to the head the remaining 4 ran.
Hi everyone! What grade (out of 10) would you give this video?

Muy buenas las películas de Jackie Chan son siempre de 10
Hmm, why is the choreography really slow? Usually in jackie chan fights it's fast. 8.5 / 10 still I guess. Maybe us movie instead of hongkong?
One of the greatest action actors of all time
In a room full of objects, Jackie Chan is invincible😄

Watch the Hong Kong version of this movie, particular Jackie’s fight with Bill Wallace- it’s so much better

All I am saying is talent wasted by the so-called director and its pity.
Yeah exactly. I felt the same the movie is so not Jackie chan style it's more like b grade Hollywood action movie of the 80s.

Very bad fight scenes, slow, choregraphy like amateur, we see the hit "don't touch" effect.
Not the Jackie we like.
