I have done this on many Ford models. The white plastic plus shaped joiner fails which is a common problem with Ford models. I went in from underneath to remove the 2 bolts for the catch as not to damage the grill. Once the bonnet is open, You have some options. 1. You can replace just the white plastic joiner. 2. You can replace the whole bonnet lock & pull it it apart so it fits your original key (Which I have done & is a flaff) 3. The easy option, Replace the whole lock/key barrel but will come with a set of separate keys. I am a driveway mechanic & The last one I did for a neighbour took less than one hour. Hope this helps.
Thanks for uploading this. Mine failed a week ago on a 10 year old Focus Zetec. Watched loads of 'how to remove' videos. Screwdriver trick failed despite over 30 minutes of trying. Getting grille out was a 1 hour nightmare where some videos seem to show it as easy! Caused some damage to plastic shroud that goes above grille. Lock cable inner had snapped behind lock and also white plastic plus shaped joiner had one lug broken. Waiting on an ebay replacement kit and trim clips at present. Stupid design that there is no simple emergency way to open bonnet when this fails.
Nice job sorted 👍 in theory bonnet lock hidden there probably seemed a good idea to Ford designer, but in practice when it goes wrong it's a nightmare. Cost me £175 to get it sorted by Ford dealer. Again well done for sorting it yourself
Usually they are universal on ford's I changed the locking mechanism on my 2010 focus about 12 months ago. If you order the parts off amazon the connection fasteners known as scavits which look like plastic crosshead screws should pop up in packs of 12 if you wish to perches them together with your new locking mechanism . It's worth bearing in mind that these usually carnt be refitted after removal as they usually break off at the base
Sorry to bother you, I need to know what screw Is needed to hold the bonnet latch to the car. I mean the 2 bolts you took out. One of mine somehow went missing and I wanted to replace my bonnet lock. My friend told me it’s a 10mm
@@PaulinhoThompson thank you and where do you reckon i can get a replacement screw from as I wanted to change both the latch and the rod. I just wanted to know the specs on the screw so i can just buy another.
Really useful video - but how did you get the grill off without breaking it? The outer two clips on the ST don't seem to be accessible when the bonnet is closed.
Getting the grill off is the worst part to be honest, and sadly all of that footage never made it into the video. Some of the clips you can get to through the holes in the grill, and you can push them off, which will allow you to be move one end of the grill back into the car. The others I got to via the bottom grill, I ended up with plenty of cuts and bruises from pushing my hand through the slot (which is something I wouldn't advise) and just pushing it evenly out of it's holding. I almost gave up doing it, but thought to myself if I don't do it I'll never get it out.
@@PaulinhoThompson Thanks for taking the time to reply. I feared there would be no magic solution. We'll have access to a lift at the weekend (it's my son's car) so maybe we can get at the clips from below. Failing that, just reach up and swing at the mechanism with a hammer. How's the replacement part holding up?
@@mf-bk6qt yeah you could gain access from the bottom 👍🏻 and not wishing to tempt fate, but the "cheap" auction site purchase is holding up fine thanks
tnx, il try to swap to this PLASTIC version, cause the original metal wire rope style lock keeps brake every 4-6 months, btw - my method of opening boot is just remove the mesh and then smash all white plastic part with hammer, and then open with screwdriver, BARBARIC but done in less than minute.
Thanks. How did you get the grille out initially? I am having the same issue on my Australia delivered Focus XR5 Turbo (Focus ST) and I can't get the grille out
@@PaulinhoThompson Thanks for replying. I managed to remove it by going in from underneath, snapping the bottom of the Scrivets off and then using a hole punch to push them through, then yeeting the grille out with muscle power. Got it sorted out
It's the same one I used from amazon last year but I would take it easy with the plastic arm by not turning to quickly and stressing it . I have a feeling that thay could easily brake up after becoming brital and back to square one again
Not even 3 mins in and already been more useful than the past 5 videos I’ve watched
Thank you SO much..

How can you remove it from underneath when it still won't release the catch that attaches to the bonnet

Glad you're getting it sorted, it's a very poor design isn't it.
First mod I'm doing to my new ST, just waiting for a dry day, thanks for the vid Paul :D

Thanks John, it was a ball ache, but I enjoyed doing it.
Thank you.The skrewdriver worked.After watching this video👍
Brilliant, thanks for watching.
Thank you, helped a lot. Can you please tell what size bonnet clips we should order ?
Which clips are you after ?
@PaulinhoThompson which holds the grill on 2 sides I took them out with chisel in order to pull the grill out

Replaced the original with another that lasted 2 weeks think I opened the bonnet twice take a tile don’t fit a new one just use long flat screwdriver
2 weeks, wow how annoying.. thanks for watching my video 👍🏻

You should be able to use a long screwdriver and reach the rotating part located under the slam panel.
How did you remove the white plastic '+' piece from the lock?
Where do you get the replacement part from that your using
It was an ebay special. Not overly expensive either.
How’s the new lock holding up mate mine just gone on the rs and have seen a couple of versions a like this one though cheers

How did you remove the grill
It just clips out, although it does require a bit of strong arm tactics.
One stupid idea! Ford tech department didn’t think this design through!
