I study music and this guy is arguably one of the most iconic avant garde entertainers of the 21st century!

      @David-sk9vv 8 лет назад +6

I don't know what it means to 'study' music because to me, music is about feeling and emotion not analysis and study. That being said... I would extend your compliment about being "one of the most iconic avant garde entertainers of the 21st century" by adding... in the History of Music and Entertainment!
      Great comment by the way...

@David Brown very naive notion although with the right intentions!
of course you can study music like you can study art, architecture & fashion...

He looked great! In any interview I've watched w/ him, he's always so polite, generous about other musicians and incredibly humble. As far as the "washed up" comment below, I do beg to differ. My daughter and I saw him in September 2019 and he was incredibly fit w/ his voice still sounding great and a wikkid tight band w/ a hard edge to them. That was for the Friend or Foe tour, which was supposed to continue in North America on the west coast except for the pandemic happening. 64, nearly 65 when we saw him, he was beyond amazing and far from washed up.
    ~
Even during the time of this interview, 2016, again, no, not washed up and most certainly worth every penny and more to see him perform for two hours. I really do wish people would keep their negative commentary to themselves. We don't all have to act fangirl or fanboy-ish about him, but have some respect and give credit where credit is due before typing. All you'd have to do is look at videos of tours done previous to the Friend or Foe tour, from when he basically started touring on a larger scale around 2013 again. If you want to be a naysayer, fine, but please know what you're talking about.
    ~
I defy a lot of musicians to perform as well as he can at his age. I've seen younger acts (Ian Astbury w/ The Cult, for example) where Ian should, rightfully call it a day and could be called "washed up" and could provide video to back that up. Billy Duffy, he's still righteous. Honestly, if you can see Adam whenever touring starts up again, I'd highly recommend seeing him. My daughter, at 22, had never heard of him and 80's music and punk isn't her *thing* at all, but she is absolutely adamant about the lovely Mr. Goddard. Trust me, not an easy feat. Great interview. Would have been a great show to see w/ Iggy on the bill, too.

I will add that although knowing his music in the 80's, I didn't consider myself a fan back then. It was through watching him on The British Masters (Chapter 6) that I became interested in knowing more about him than I did. His 2007 (though I thought it was 2005) autobiography is one of the best celebrity autobiographies/biographies that I have ever read and I've read more than my fair share. I even checked, more than once, to see if he had had help writing the book, which he didn't. He's honest, open and doesn't try to whitewash anything. I also highly recommend it for being able to understand bi-polar disorder. He does speak about his struggles w/ depression, mania and hypomania extremely well. I did read the book after having seen him.
      ~
But again, I wanted to see him because I researched him extensively beforehand. The British Masters interview is on here as is The Madness of Prince Charming which deals w/ him being bi-polar. Along w/ all of that, though, I did backtrack to the 80's, watched all of his videos that I would have seen on Much Music (the Canadian version of MTV, at the time). I don't think there is much on here I haven't seen. Someone else mentioned "studying" him and got a derisive remark for saying that he had studied him. But, honestly, if you do do that, going back to what's available from the late 70's on, I think you'll find why it angers me to see someone comment that he's "washed up". Not one bit of him is. Another younger musician that could be said to be is Axl Rose.
      ~
Did he basically disappear and make a comeback? Yes. He's done it twice. Once, in the late 80's until 1995 when he released Wonderful. Then again, when he was a Stay-at-home-Dad to his now 22 year old daughter, Lily and also again dealing w/ mental health issues in the early 2000's, which saw him being sectioned twice. To Shola Ebofin, who studies music and has concluded that Adam is arguably one of the most avant garde entertainers of the 21st century, you're absolutely right. For him to be performing at 65 the way he does, physically fit as a fiddle and w/ a voice aged like a fine wine, it's momentous that he's still w/ us after all that he's been through.
      ~
Again, please don't comment negatively unless you know what you're talking about. Look at anything from 2013 on, on here (even, very quickly, his performance in London for Record Store Day in 2015 w/ current band member Will Crewdson) and I don't think a sole person would agree w/ the washed up comment.

LOL, the comments below about the over sized wind screens on these mics.
First thing I thought was, quite a windy day for this interview, now is it?
So glad he's still among'st us. I saw him live in a Boston night club, 1982.
He was suffering with the flu, and Marco had busted his wrist and was playin guitar with a cast on nun the less.
The show was awesome. I was 60ft from the stage. My little sis at the time won tickets to see this show, but the damn radio station didn't tell anyone that it was a 21 and up night club.
She was only 16 and heart broken when the tickets came in the mail. On the back, "Must be 21 or over to attend."
I got some good shots with my Cannon AE1 35mm. They (bouncers) took my flash but I had night film loaded. She cried when I gave her 8 closeups a week later after they got developed.
Now.......you can hardly see past all the smartphone zombies holding their devices over their heads blocking your view of the stage, not worth even going to live shows.......sad days.
Not to mention the crappy sound recordings and jiggling videos you tube has to offer.
Oh well, the young and naive.

Read his book recently which was a wonderful amalgamation of the ego that gets you up there and the humility of experience. I find the whole re-emerge of Adam Ant as an artist, who never went away but needed time out, a brilliant inspiration. I don't know what will happen in future but I would like to think that the celebration of creativity presented on his recent tour sends a message that we are in need of art in music. From him or anyone he inspires.
