Ive been playing guitar since 1977...mostly rock, but my teacher in art school got me into jazz. He cried when Emily died. I remember him saying hoe upset he was at losing her to drugs. I had heard of her because there weren't many female guitarists back then. I still love jazz...and I still learn from Emily's lessons.
I didn't realize the guitar was perceived to negatively. I think of Pat Martino, George Benson, Pat Metheny, Allan Holdsworth, and Frank Gambale before Slash or Steve Vai. I guess I'm the product of a different generation. Anyway, I would compare Emily to Sco, John Abercrombie...Berklee ECM records guys. There are many musical guitarists, but they aren't celebrated in "Guitar Hero" games!
I agree with the comment directly below this.. But also I think that Pink Floyds Dark Side of The Moon is a Great Jazz album as well!! It's melodic structure and phrasings are very well formed and unlike "Rock" albums I feel the lean towards Jazz is what the Popular audience liked (Unknowingly) about it... Check it out if you've never heard it..
By the way. ...I forgot to mention, I'm female. So, she was a great inspiration. And it's funny what she once said about walking into Manny's guitar shop on 48 th St: No one paid any mind if I played Zeppelin either. But when I played Stay Cats people looked and listened! If you played the chords, melody, and locked in the rhythm, people HAD to redirect us, REGARDLESS that we're female.
Unfortunately we've had enough decades of rock and roll bands writing lyrics about how Rock is the best music in the world, and now we've got parents in their 40's and 50's who don't even know what Jazz is.
She was absolutely awesome and is very sadly missed.

seems like a nice person wish i'd had the chance to meet her.

I love you, Porgy
This is neat to see. Does anyone know whether she showed up at the Foundation when she was in town?
