@@zacktelander W. A. Pullum has a book about it, published in 1926. He had a bunch of old timey records in the British amateur weight lifting association. Mark H. Berry does as well, published in 1930. He was an American weight lifting champion. Those might be good places to start. Alan Calvert, Thomas Inch, and Arthur Saxon all had some books too. I think most of those are about lifting techniques and the writers careers. I dunno what there might be about old timey competitions.

I was a competitor in the 1982 Commonwealth Games, watched Oliver Orok lift live, and trained next to him in the training hall. He repped out 250kg squats like it was nothing and had the technique of a schoolboy lifter. He actually weighed 95kg and was about 5’6”. I understood he went on to try American football but struggled with injury. A genetic freak.

Ivan Ganev and Angel Acrabov both coached the Nigerian team at one point. Both Bulgarian. I'm not sure who the one coaching them in the video is. I think Acrabov might've also gotten sanctioned. Regarding sanctioned athletes, Nigeria does have a notable amount of positives over the years. Potentially related.
For a little history with Orok, he went on to bomb out at the 1984 Olympics in the 100kg category. Snatched 172.5 for a 5kg lead, very impressive for an athlete that didn't use a hookgrip. Called for press outs on the C&J.
His teammate, Etim "Ironbar" Bassey, got injured at that Olympics and was forced to retire. The Nigerian federation abandoned him so he had to pay for surgery with his life savings and now works on roads in Lagos.
Ruth Ogbeifo, a silver medalist in 2000 and maybe Nigeria's most successful weightlifter, had a similar story where she sustained an injury in training and was forced to retire after losing all support from the federation. However, she's started a program to train youth athletes and might be a positive change in the country.

As a casual spectator, I find it strange that that lift "had" to be called. If someond told me they could lift x weight overhead on straight arms, and did this, iId have agreed that they did.
I think this is a problem for olympic weightlifting as a spectator sport.
