But if he can "charm beasts" as he claimed, then he proves he MIGHT have some genuine power and thus could be of use for future plots. One-Eye, for a brute, made cunning test. Either he dies and is useless, or he succeeds and can be used in future campaigns. One-Eye loses nothing either way.

I kinda like this version, cuz with the music in the background it makes it sound like ZigZag is trying to talk over the music, like he's yelling for a reason, trying desperately to keep the Mighty One Eye's attention. But like, you can clearly see he is surrounded by all manner of music and entertainment and wealth and indulgences, and he's STILL BORED.
I remember seeing this scene for the first time in the earlier Recobbled edits and I was stunned by the panning shot starting from Zigzag to reveal all the chaos that was going on in front of him, giving him reason to look so stunned but a second later I was blown away by the reveal that the whole thing was a shot directly from One Eye's POV, ending with his singular eye and finally giving him a proper introduction in full as he scowls at Zigzag. It's a marvelous shot.
Everytime I see this scene pop up I have to watch it multiple times, it's such a feast for the eyes. They may not have finished the whole movie, but damn they accomplished truly amazing feats of animation in the attempt
If your an animator, this film is an animation feat, and it’s not even finished and probably never will be. The animation is so good that when I first saw it, it got me to love animation and become an animator. This is PEAK animation, and if this came out it would be revolutionary, even now. This animator also wrote the Animator’s Survival Kit, and if you read the book you can tell this guy made it.

Not only is the animation beautiful, but I love how it perfectly conveys its message without spelling it out. Up to this point, Zigzag is the big bad. But in reality we’ve only seen him fool and intimidate peasants and politicians. Now here he is dealing REAL evil. It’s like a highschool football player going into the NFL.
It genuinely hurts how expressive this animation is. The pure meekness and sadness you can feel from poor Fido sheepishly asking for food at 0:32 always makes me feel so bad for the little guy, he's just so cute and ZigZag does NOT deserve him

The scene of him entering the camp only to realize we’re seeing it from One Eye’s POV has got to be one of the best cinematic moments ever put on film.
While this is a beautiful restoration, I will admit the lack of certain sfx weirds my brain out like not hearing Zig-Zag’s foot slamming into the floor or the sound of birds wings flapping. But given the insane visual and audio restoration ya did. That critique is honestly a nitpick. Ya did fucking great! (Plus idk what lead to those sfx being cut either.)
This single scene was condensed with so much skill and craftmanship. Mr. William's work hopefully will inspire more. Long live the Iron Age of new artists.
If you notice the skulls, the ones lining the roads leading into the tent of the Great One Eye, they only have one eyesocket! In other words, they seem to be One-Eye-skulls! It also appears to indicate that with one entirely fused or degenerated orbit (eye cavity), the One Eyes are really, as the name suggests, one-eyed. I.e., they are not just all squinting to mimic their master but really are missing an eye! Makes me wonder, together with skin coloration and tooth-profilation, whether or not they are a separate species from humans.
This is terrific work. It makes me want to rewatch the original film. Thank you for sharing your passion project with the world, and letting us enjoy Williams' work anew.
No wonder this never truly got finished, the designs I personally dont like, but the animation is jaw dropping. Even more so, knowing how old the source material is
Other way around technically. I believe the people who made Aladdin even said that they were "inspired" by the Thief and the Cobbler clips. Of course...being trapped in development hell for literal decades meant this film never had any chance to be anything even remotely as successful as Aladdin.
I find it interesting that One Eye focuses on the fact that Zigzag can charm beasts. It seems that he is the kind of warlord that prefers to win his force with brute strength rather than with deception and slight of hand.

Which resembles something out of Buddhism I think? Maybe Hinduism? Or maybe some manner of Japanese Yokai? Anyways, that it a wonderful blending of imagery there

Garrett doesn't like what I do. I cut alot of the rougher bit get rid of noise and grain sharpen and do lots of dust masking. Too impure for his cuts

ZigZag could have been an awesome appearing villain.
Hmm, this restoration seems to suffer from some fairly severe jump-nudges, like in the 1:00 transition, whereas the original is completely smooth.
