- Rare live performance of Smoke on the Water with Lars Ulrich, Ian Gillan Band, and Gizzarelli.
Live at Slims San Francisco 2006 with the Ian Gillan Band (Deep Purple) and special guests.
David Wolf Gizzarelli-Lead Guitar, Ian Gillan-Vocals, Lars Ulrich-Drums, Michael Lee Jackson-Guitar, Dean Howard-Guitar, Joe Mennonna-Keys and Sax, Rodney Appleby-Bass, and Randy Cooke-Drums.
"The lyrics of the song tell a true story: on December 4, 1971, Deep Purple had set up camp in Montreux, Switzerland to record an album using a mobile recording studio (rented from the Rolling Stones and known as the Rolling Stones Mobile Studio - referred to as the "Rolling truck Stones thing" and "the mobile" in the song lyrics) at the entertainment complex that was part of the Montreux Casino (referred to as "the gambling house" in the song lyric). On the eve of the recording session a Frank Zappa and The Mothers of Invention concert was held in the casino's theatre. During the gig a fire broke out: "In the middle of Don Preston's synthesizer solo on 'King Kong', the place suddenly caught fire. Somebody in the audience had fired a flare gun into the ceiling, at which point the rattan covering started to burn"[1][2], as mentioned in the "some stupid with a flare gun" line. The resulting fire destroyed the entire casino complex, along with all the Mothers' equipment. The "smoke on the water" that became the title of the song (credited to bass guitarist Roger Glover, who related how the title occurred to him when he suddenly woke from a dream a few days later) referred to the smoke from the fire spreading over Lake Geneva from the burning casino as the members of Deep Purple watched the fire from their hotel across the lake. The "Funky Claude" running in and out is referring to Claude Nobs, the director of the Montreux Jazz Festival who helped some of the audience escape the fire ... "

Cool performance! Lars was shocked when he saw Deep Purple in concert when he was a kid and decided to play drums after watching his favourite drummer, Paice.
Metallica and Purple rule!
The only time you'll ever see Lars Ulrich behind Yamaha Drums!
Deep purple is Lars Ulrich favourite band, and watchin a Purple show in the early 70's made him realise that he wanted to play drums while watchin Ian Paice
Every fans dream. To play with your heros, or at least one of them :)
The funny thing about this video is that Lars Ulrich saw Deep Purple live at the age of 10
back in 1973 live in Copenhagen Denmark with
his father.
I saw them(Metallica + Deep Purple)playing live at the Monsters of Rock Festival 1987
in Nuremberg, Germany. Great Festival !!!
The lives of rock stars... Thanks for being truthfull.
Lars should be appointed "Queen of the World."
this must have been a dream come true for Lars

@xHeReTiiC i think it's the occurance of Lars Ulrich and Deep Purple together on stage that makes it rare, not the video?
You lucky bastard hahaha! =D
Awesome.
i KNOW!his first concert at 9 yrs was deep puple nd i bet ian n the guys are proud and honoured by him at the same time =P
Lars Ulrich should perform with Deep Purple members and play the songs written by them in the 1970s
He does still play with Metallica, this was just a guest appearance and he grew up loving Deep Purple so I'm sure he enjoyed doing this.
listen to and justice for all album,
The bass player is funky!
Epic Video
@Broezzz Not a very nice thing to say, Ian is the frontman of Deep Purple, the band who inspired Lars to play the drums, and Ian is also one of the best voices in rock history period.
music like this STARTED metal
look to the past and see the future

@BreakingGlass77 Ahhh, good, you admit it. That's one step in the right direction....
lars rule
@J666J and wtf have you done with those 25 years? have you founded one of the greatest metal bands of all time? i didnt think so...
this video is a response to all those fucktards out there judging on who's better and who's not ... what people seem unable to realize is that all those great musicians, no matter the band, no matter the genre they are playing are literally in the pantheon of music. Good to see a couple of living legends performing on stage one of the most amazing songs of all times! 5/5 thx for the upload mate !
Does Lars know how to go more than one measure without putting a fill in?
@haggismuncher Gillan liked it, sorry you didn't ...
you cannot compare drummers from different generations... Lars Ulrich is the best drummer for the last 20 years.
DP with Lars i think
the band wouldn't allow me to go off so I had to play along with the song, but i do get a small lead guitar spot ...
That's why I'll never enter a contest, wouldn't be worth my time.
Oh really? Come on now, it's one of the most famous songs of our time, so that comment was a _little_ bit superfluous...
Sorry, but Deep Purple wasn't touring in 1986. They toured in 1984/85 w. the 'Perfect Strangers' album, and again in 1987/88 with 'The House Of Blue Light'.
the song wqas played really nice but the camera proboly was thwe probolem of all the damn static....
The bass kills the sound as soon as it drops in :)
MrCrrispy not much I can do. The camera mic sucked.
i spy a line 6 spider valve can any one else find it?
Tell 'em, girl!

Rod Smallwod? From Iron Maiden?
wow marfa
Hy, I think the guy on the right goes by the name of Michael Jackson. He's from Buffalo.
Hey masterofpuppets84 I don't know why you got thumbs down for that comment as you were dead right, that was his original intention
who wouldnt jump at the chance to play with rich blackmore
@MrHeavysteel half of metallica's songs don't need two bass drums. and neither does Smoke on the Water
@angielovesmaps haha you kissed me i remember it well ...
Some of you are insultingly crass. What did you expect of an off the cuff jam session? They were having fun and don't need your criticism.
sounded like hetfield shouting this better be good!
lars tocando con un bombo solo?
lars and peter criss have same fucking playing burk!!!!!!
Guitarhero what about Alex Van halenhaven't you heard Hot for Teacher.
hahaha ive never seen lars widda bear !!!
Poor Ian Gillan
Nu-shit it's how it should be called man...
7:10 Do the moob-groove.
Mehh I didn't think Lars' playing was that bad actually :S
Everyone else was awesome too.
Good job mate. I can't get my head around someone having to work on a solo for SOTW through. It's a bit like Highway Star: Play Richie's signature licks, dick around for bit and then shut the fuck up :D
Well my opinion, He did it real great on justice, I love his drums on that album, otherwise,,, he ruined kill em all big time. He has always trashed M live shows, but anyway he´s a part of something real special. Not close to Gillan but,,,,,,, who are.
Ruined Kill 'Em All?
if i see well, there is Kirk Hammett too...
el micro de la camara, deja mucho que desear
Hart846, Although I agree with u I will say that there are more creative drummers, one of em surely is Danny Carey... Still Lars does his job best.
how old is this?
ok.
@bimbo9 it was probably quite good but the audio quality is shite
he did want to be a tennis player..
its on a rock band load screen.
he had that intention until he met hetfield.
lars usually beats them to death^^ we all know that. that makes him such an intense drummer
Awesome, nice find.
That snare sounds so ugly imo.
But true metal right there!
WTF? Lars!?!? he should be playing for Metallica. is there he is belong :(
any body there are with me?
sort of like Iron Man, only easier to play and alot more well-known...
