You stole my heart with the steam whistle! I had one set up in my Lincoln Town Car, but ran it from an 11 gallon air tank. I still have the Viair compressor in my Amazon wish list, but my Lincoln with its HUGE trunk space is long gone. Beautiful boat and GREAT job on the build. Perfect hull choice, too. I had a Bayliner 2255 gas burner, but would rather have your boat nowadays.
I used to be an active member on a UK electric boating forum, and a fellow had electrified a bayliner of similar dimensions and weight to my launch. The general theme was that it took about twice the power to go a certain speed. I'm sure this is a result of the flow detachment at the stern on a planing hull. Yea if you can find any small displacement hull, they are ideal for electrification. I also have a Bayliner 2452 that will get an electric kicker, so stay tuned for that... If I can find motivation to make a video about it. Thanks for the comments!
Great video! it seems also to be the only one i could find so far on this this boat. Also, no images on Google to be found I just bought one today. It was sitting in storage and converted to be powered by an outboard, although there is no motor on it as of yet. It is only slightly different than yours but also cute as a button! Amazing engineering on your re-electrification... hats off!
Love "re-electrification"! Small craft with inboard propulsion is a bygone era now, but for the dedicated its really no sweat. Let me know if you have any questions about repairing it or restoring it to inboard drive. She gets about 180MPGe.
Really enjoyable video. Your electrical skills and knowledge are admirable. I currently have another type of picnic launch, a 21' martini. Fun to cruise.
Meticulous design and fabulous video, I'm guessing you were a Navy Nuc., hoping you will someday enjoy the luxury of Lithium batteries. Wonderful boat!
Awesome design and video Although i love the Electric , with that bigKeel , it would had been perfect for a Heat exchanger Cooling system for a small Deisel that would provide that design to be used as a Long Range Cruiser being very capable of carrying enough Fuel to acheive long Voyages at one point in the 1980s Interstate manufactured almost every brand of Lead Acid Batteries ! i had a small Marine business inSouthFlorida in which we had a account at Interstate and a Trusted Manager there told me that because my Dad was a fan Of Diehard Batteries from Sears that the guy explained was just a rebadged Interstate one they manufactured for the Retailer ! Much older versions had a gas four cyl, and eventually a Westerbeke M12, a tiny two cyl diesel. Sometimes I Antagonize the electric only lake by me by playing the RUclips using diesel sleep channel on my boat stereo. Sounds amazing and it just seems to fit.
Your 'antique' electric boat is a whipper-snapper when compared to those made by The Immisch Electric Launch Co. and the Thames Valley Launch Co. here in the UK who started in 1890's. There are still boats/launches of that vintage still operational over here today.
Very nice and fascinating! I have often been intrigued by these, and I am surprised at how complicated it actually all is. So how long-far-fast can you run with your set up?
If you look for another video I made testing a trolling motor on this boat, you can see the range charts I made based on lead acid batteries at nameplate capacity.
I don’t have any forced ventilation in battery spaces. The batteries gas very little with good chargers, despite their age. This isn’t a good rule of thumb to follow though, I have newer lead acid batteries in other vehicles that gas like crazy.
Like many things I touch, I’ve turned something simple into something very complicated. It’s how I entertain myself I suppose! The ABB/Baldor gearbox might be hard to come by but there are similar units.
Another really good option to study, would be to install a Caroute or other electric pod with its shaft stuck up through the rudder log. This would vastly simply things, make the boat quieter and eliminate any leaks into the hull. I made a prior video about pushing this hull with the Caroute 160lb thrust motor.
I have a 18' Newport Electric Packet (1987) by W.D. Shock. Great boat, but Speed Selector Switch just failed. Its 2 speed forward and 2 speed reverse switch. Any ideas on how to replace it. Schock and Duffy do not carry replacement parts for models this old. Bob Berry
Hi Bob. The switch is something pretty common, Salzar or something. I'll dig through my box of parts and see if its still around. I'd recommend getting an electronic motor controller and directional solenoids like a golf cart uses.
I would like to find a match to this boat for use on our lakes and rivers in Wisconsin, MN and U.P. Already have some knowledge of electrical from my 400 amp hour, 3000 watt inverter system in my van (Victron/Battleborn). Also have a 1970’s Elec Trak mower with snowblower built by GE. Would appreciate any info I can get to find one and try to duplicate your efforts which look fantastic!
If you are a strong DIYer you can easily convert any small inboard drive boat to electric. You can also drop an electric outboard on something. Love your Elec Trak those are super cool.
Agree, but the hull design on this model is, as you said, beneficial. I like the shallow draft combined with the keel/prop protection-like a trawler. And the fact that it’s trailerable-great. That pop top is a nice feature. I can picture some Velcro or channels for no see-um netting while camped. Did a search last night under schlock and Duffy. Nothing leading to one of these. Any tips on tracking one down?
@@dmwi1549 it is a W.D. Schock make, Newport Electric Packet is the model. Also can be found as Pearson 18 Packet, Hudson River Packet, and sometimes they are marketed as Duffy boat company manufactured.
Too expensive and they don’t last very long. AGMs seem to last five years and then suddenly a cell shorts and they are done for. Cheap LFP is at cost parity with fancy AGM at this point too.
My favorite place is a small two mile long lake, typical three hour tour perhaps ten miles covered. Maximum I have gone in one day was about 40 miles on the Amite river in Louisiana over about nine hours.
@@OVER-bENGINEERED In FL you can register a boat as antique when it's 25 years old. I've been looking at PMAC motors for a conversion I'm doing. Did you buy a package with speed controller, or did you spec it yourself? Any info on that will help me. I subscribed, are you trying to get to 1000?
It's certainly a lot quieter than diesel or petrol powered boats and still very good performance. Totally amazed at this!
Can't help finding it cool to be sailing an electric Schock! ;-)
Beautiful boat. You also certainly care for her and for all the hard work on all the upgrades over decades. Best wishes.

Electric boats are very common in Germany's inland waters.
Awesome work! Just got your comment! Will review on my next vid if you want.

Where can I buy one of these boats?
National Electrical Manufacturers Association ''NEMA'' is a standard not a manufacturer.

just to be pedantic an antique needs to be 100yrs old.
Well the packet is era correct time period, and the hull is a direct copy of a 1950-1060 boat, but yea, vintage is a better description.
