  • In this video we will A/B the two speakers. The amp is set to 50watts and is played at a pretty loud volume to drive the speakers.
    1:26 - Stock Clean
    1:59 - Vintage 30 Clean
    2:33 - Stock Crunch
    3:22 - Vintage 30 Crunch
    4:09 - Stock HiGain
    4:39 - Vintage 30 HiGain
    Our verdict is the Celestion Vintage 30 is warmer, cleaner and slightly less flabby on the bottom end. It makes the Katana sound less "artificial."
    However, beware because the cost of a new speaker is almost half the cost of the amp depending on which model you get.

    Thanks for doing this comparison. I have one of these speakers laying around and the big complaint I have about the Katana is the harshness you're referring to. It sort of disappears in the mix when I play with other instruments but practicing by myself sometimes it can drive me nuts. Doing this change right after I finish this comment.

    i just got the artist 2 katana and feel exactly the same about the waza kraft speaker , every speaker i tried in it's place i liked better , they were some speakers out ov my crate tube amps and a eminence swamp thing , i read were a guy put his waza craft speaker in his dsl40 marshall and he said it sounds glorious in it ,food for thought ....

    Through my headphones, it probably sounds completely different than what you are hearing, there isn't much difference clean. Stock speaker smokes the V30 at high gain, woolly vs fizzy, but again that is through my headphones. Thanks for the video, I was thinking of swapping my Katana's speaker.

      You heard correct regarding the high gain, but increasing the bass with the V30 installed is way better

      I noticed a lot creamier tone throughout the range clean. It didn't completely change the character of the amp other than that for me. I also noticed what you said about the distortion sound being a little too on the bright side but I don't think it sounded worse than the stock speaker, just different. I'll have to try it myself to see if I like it.

    I have the katana artist mkii and compared the Waza and v30 and have to say both sound great with their own characteristics, Waza def more bass heavy where the v30 was more tight and defined on low end but also have to note kept the Waza in its original combo cab and v30 was in a custom box I built that sealed air tight

  • @xtheunknown6717

    My thought, the V30 has a tighter top end, but It would not transfer well to a Strat or Tele. It would sound more tinny, with less defined bass. I don't hear flab in the stock speaker. I play/record/post to Twanger Twanger Central with big fat beautiful tone, not flab.
    Stock is better for Slow Dancing In A Burning Room which I get right now pretty nicely. Same with many blues tones, Jimi Voodoo Chile (the blues one)
    I also get closer to SRV than I ever have even with a Fender Deluxe with a Zendrive 2. That rig has great tone but my Kat also gets a very great tone,,, and imo has more clarity than the Fender/Zen.
    Wanna buy a great Zendrive 2?
    I'll stick with the stock. But I have to say hands down the V30 is the best Celestion speaker I've heard.

    Keep in mind a V30 must be broken in for a good long time to get sweet. I have the Artist and still breaking in the Waza. You cant really take a good opinion until speakers get well broken in, both or all speakers. I do not gig with a brand new speaker. I have to break it in very well before I gig with a new rig or cab.

    • @gamesandguitars3901
      @gamesandguitars3901 4 года назад +1

      The speaker helps a lot with that but that’s also because their high gain tone was shit, it had way too much bass and no where near enough mids, so the V30s boost the midrange and cut some of the bass. They could’ve gotten a similar tone with just screwing with the tone knobs, that being said, V30s are great speakers and they will definitely help the sound.

  • @barneycarparts

    Not much difference being the Kat is voiced after a v30 I think the V30 is a little quieter and very slight tighter bass.

    • @mmagoon67
      @mmagoon67  4 года назад +2

      What I've found with in making some of these videos is that sometimes what's seems like a big difference in person isn't as noticeable in recordings; and sometimes what seems minimal in the recording is actually exaggerated in person. With this particular instance it's more noticeable in person. The Main difference is in the HiGain sounds. We purposely drove the bass hard to show how much better the V30 could handle it. And the other speaker we did in our other video was the Redback and it handled the bass even better.

    If I put a Vintage 30 in mine and run it on 100W, will I damage the amp?

    • @mmagoon67
      @mmagoon67  4 года назад +2

      That’s a very good question. I don’t think it will damage your amp. If it was a tube amp I would be much more concerned. However, since the vintage 30 is a 60w speaker, you definitely don’t want to run it at 100w past half volume because if the speaker receives more heat than it can handle then the coil will begin to melt. If you can, try to find the amp’s actual maximum output power.

    Hi. I've got a celestion v30 16ohm . Can I put it in the katana 100mk2 which has an 8 ohm speaker. I love the sound of the v30 but cant spend on the 8ohm version right now. I read online that it won't hurt the amp but might cause some volume loss which is not an issue for me. Is it ok to do the swap??

      I was going to do a video a while back answering that question but I couldn't because the 3 tones I recorded were all identical.
