He was my surgeon 10 years ago. He literally saved my life, this was before Obama care and my insurance refused to pay for anything related to my neck and back. My cervical spine had deteriorated to the point Dr Phillips said driving over a speed bump could snap my neck. I would cry myself to sleep at night because of the pain, and fear of it never being fixed, it was considered a pre-existing condition, 3 other doctors denied me because of my insurance. He was the only one that cared, after seeing my MRI, he did emergency 9 hour surgery knowing my insurance was not paying. He is extremely caring and genuinely wants the best for his patients, but he's conservative with pain meds. He doesn't want to see his patients fall into addiction so he only gave me like 45 5 mg of hydrocodone (I think, maybe less) when I left the hospital. I know it came from a place of concern, and appreciate him looking out for me in every aspect. The world has lost a gentle, caring, and extraordinary Surgeon.

This is quite unfortunate. As an RN, often, we are caught in this tag between patients and doctors on pain management. Post surgical pain is real but I also understand the regulations for opioids subscriptions doctors have to adhere to. Personally patients should be able to get at least 2 weeks of effective break through pain meds. I’ve had patients get Tylenol orders or the lowest dose of narcotics 2 to 3 days post op which is unrealistic. Not every patient is a drug seeker. I’ve been scolded many a times by doctors advocating for such when it’s absolutely necessary. We have some really good doctors and some are dismissive of patient’s needs. It’s such an unfortunate situation this is. Condolences to all affected by this incident.

Truth. As a Chronic Pain disabled person, not currently being tormented by the "Inquisition," the Anti-Medication Zealots. But I certainly have been. Every day I suffer, not only from the 5 legitimate and well documented pain conditions/sites, but by daily pushing through pain, pushing.... And sometimes (during parts of 2010-2016; with threats too since), being tormented, even at times tortured, by the self-righteous smug anti-medication zealots -who massively and sweepingly (as if it applied to everybody), pride themselves on tormenting patients with legitimate pain, self-deluding themselves they are "sparing them from addiction" /Except that people differ very much on whether they're prone to addictions (I'm not) or not; and what is true is they are being tormented and tormented instead of medically helped. I should have better relief (so I don't explode) for some of the jobs/ rep. motion tasks I must do. We'll see.

Add to that, some people have gene errors where they may metabolize meds like oxycodeine either to quickly or slowly, so it's less (or more) effective. Oxycodeine has absolutely no effect on my pain, so I use ibuprofen to help dull after surgery pain. If people were treated for these gene errors before getting surgery it might lead to better understanding of pain control.

As a nurse and a patient with chronic pain, you have no idea how bad this guy was suffering. More often than not the shady side of pain control you don’t know anything about (big pharma violations and overprescribing in the past now controlled by DEA regulations, resulting in the current under- treatment of pain) drives many to suicide and now apparently homicide. Try to educate yourself before you judge people as “wanting to their way”-- it appears this man reached out to the surgeon and I would suspect that the doctor blew him off and denied any responsibility for a botched surgery. I don’t agree with the fact that he killed people but this story likely has a lot more to it than people know. Patients don’t just “shoot up” hospitals for no reason.

Why is it that people don't realize that it doesn't matter how capable the police are, by the time they react many people are already dead or wounded. This is the nature of the kinds of weapons these mass shooters use. They can even pierce body armor. It's so strange for the rest of the world to hear American citizens brag that their police prevented more deaths when in fact they were unable to prevent 21 deaths (or however many). You cannot subtract imagined deaths from actual deaths and feel proud of yourself! That's not how math works. Sad, so very sad.

    • @sharonwells9593
      @sharonwells9593 2 года назад

I don't think so. The gunman in Uvalde had shot a hundred rounds, which means many of the victims likely were shot more than once. Assault rifles and ammo fire with high velocity and as it enters the body it tears everything to bits and thus vital organs are no longer functional. With so many children being killed and so small, they had to have been riddle little bodies. Likely dying instantly after being shot or very shortly thereof.
True well never know due to officers waiting nearly an hour to confront the shooter.

His doctor just told him he was going to have to live with it, that he must have a low tolerance to pain. No other doctor in the area would toch his back. His son drove him to another doctor 4 hours away and that doctor redid the operation only to find that the other doctor had screwed a screw into his spinal cord that was causing the pain. Yes doctors do make mistake, not all doctors correct their mistakes.

Thee years ago I watched my best girlfriend die from stomach and liver cancer. Doctors gave her 18 months to live. Her medication for pain was so ridiculous, a junkie wouldn't even bother to take them. She was in agony and as a result, couldn't eat although she was hungry. Only at the end of her life, which was 3 short months later, and in a Hospice facility, did she receive proper pain meds. I'm sorry people O.D. and get hooked on opioids but it's unfair to the doctors, who get hassled and could loose their medical license, and the people who live in pain as a result. My friend told me she was going to start buying Heroine on the streets because of the pain. If she had done that, she may have gotten that last year of life she so desperately wanted to spend time with her only son and her granddaughter. This is no excuse for what this man did. He obviously didn't understand that the doctor's hands are tied due to the latest ridiculously strict rules re: prescription opioids.

I am a Vietnam Vet with two purple hearts. My L/arm being the worst, and while in surgery in Japan, a nurse came to my bedside to inform me that my arm injury was so bad the doctors advised it was necessary to amputate the arm. I wigged out and told them not to remove my arm and as long as it looked like an arm in the sleeve let it alone. When I was recovering from surgery, the first thing I remember was reaching over to feel if my arm was intact, and thankfully it was. It took several months of treatment but I still have my arm at age 84. Later on in life I went into Law Enforcement and while responding to a hot call with lights and siren, I was struck broadside by a car driven by a lady that didn't see a need to stop for me and went around a long line of stopped cars. This was deemed a workers comp injury, and for many months to follow I went through countless surgeries for my neck injury. Back then I was treated with Oxycontin, the non addictive pain medication , yeah right. That medication went on forever, until the workers comp decided no more treatment, based upon what a doctor stated in his report saying the patients pain is all in his head. My CV column is fused and I can barely bend my neck and I am in never ending pain. The doctor with the comment was admitted for a neck injury . While I was in for an appointment a nurse I had gotten to know, informed me a doctor was now a patient is a non stop complainer and demands more and more pain meds. She winked at me and said, oh yes we are waiting for an approval for the pain meds(smile). He will get his pain meds when it's time, after all he knows now just how it feels. I didn't ask who the DR. is. When I went to the VA they treated my arm and leg pain, but not with Oxy, and got me off that. My time is running out and my wife cares for me non stop. My friend had a headache for years and her doctor kept telling her you're just stressed. No scans no nothing. When I visited her I told her to get a different doctor a lot of times because they're like this for women. Her headache got bad and she went into an ER on a Saturday and was dead the next Tuesday from a brain tumor. Is that not murder? She didn't get to meet her grandchildren or see her children get married. I have family members going through this right now, they're so sick they lost their jobs. They have different doctors and different issues but the doctors don't even try to get them diagnosed. In fact they're being abused instead of the doctors taking it seriously even when there's all kinds of bad test results. And lawyers won't even take a case unless the malpractice is easy to prove and the person died.

I don’t know if this is true or not with this case. But I’ve seen many of my friends go and have surgery and get nothing for pain but Tylenol. Surgeries with orthopedic surgeons getting no pain management. Doctors are so afraid of getting sued for addiction they do not give pain meds after surgery anymore. I can’t imagine having major surgery and offering no pain meds. I had back surgery years ago and I was given hundreds of pain pills. It went from too much pain medicine to zero pain medicine. I couldn’t imagine being in so much agony not being able to take anything but a Tylenol for days on days on days complaining of extreme pain. I feel bad that you could see the guy was desperate but no one would help him. He was just asking for pain relief but because you can’t charge for that he wasn’t given anything.
Maybe he went crazy after being in agony for so long. What he did wasn’t right just make that clear. My prayers to the family were affected.
People think the guy maybe should’ve gone on the street and bought some opioids. That’s Russian roulette because fentanyl is almost in all of them which can cause immediate overdose.
They used to give pain meds all the time for surgery before 2016 for decades and very few people who had addiction type personality would become addicted. He could’ve been sent to pain management and given medicine.

It seems odd that a surgeon would not see his patient that soon after a surgery. There are so many assumptions. Surgeons can give you painkillers for 30 days. But regardless, maybe painkillers were not easing his pain. I have no idea why that happened. But I live in the real world and to all of the people who are accusatory to him because of assumptions think about this. Physicians who deal with back pain among others have a DEA number and not the patient. It is because of the abuse of prescriptions made by physicians that got doctors walk in the line because the DEA is watching them. Now doctors assume because you say you're in pain that you must be some junkie trying to get them in trouble with the drug enforcement agency? There was a time before the opioid crisis where doctors prescribed painkillers when people were in serious pain and we didn't get addicted. It is the reoccurring monthly prescriptions that did this to America and now everybody suffers needlessly out of respect for those who swear to do no harm.

The doctor saw the guy twice within five days of surgery. What more do you want? For the doctor to drop all other patients? Screw anyone sympathizing with the shooter.

I at the age of 48 had a radical double mascetomy was discharged with pain meds but for the next several months I was I annoyed 😠 pain at my 30 day post op appointment I asked for more pain meds,, they said NO,,I was a single parent an still had to work but needed to take at least a half of pill every 6-12 hours.. I was SO uncomfortable in my own skin,, for heavens sake I just had major amputation!!! They left me like this an refused to Pain manage ME! How cruel! I have no history of drug abuse. If I’d known they were going to be like this I would of not gone thru the surgery.

Probably could've retained a lawyer to sue the doctor for less than the cost of the guns. Such needless violence.

No they made laws that docs and staff can't be sued for inadequate services. People like me and chronic pain every single day we cannot take it in most of them do commit suicide or other acts. This is what the government has done to us everyone can thank Mitch McConnell from Kentucky he's the one that started this.

They won't do that...I have lung and heart pain, taking the VA almost one month to see a pulmonologist. Cement within the Pulmonary veins from kyphoplastys. Hopefully I won't die before that.
