    Like I said in the live stream the other day I prefer to keep mixed gender tanks but I must say your tank is beautiful. The trout, rhoadesii and kiwinge are truly special. Your Malawi hawk is also one of the nicest I’ve seen, I would be very proud of these fish.

    I would NEVER compare my tanks to yours, it’s not a philosophy as to my situation is still growing. I have some tanks that are well proportioned and others that have been called eclectic “in a good way”. 99% of my fish came to me by happen stance and didn’t even know the difference between a red zebra and zebra obluidens when I first started. This being said I have in the works designs and plans for things as they grow. And I couldn’t agree more that they are very personable but have tendency to switch temperament. This being said again, like how you demonstrate your South American and Haplochromis is a good way of avoiding conflict of any sort. Can only say good things about this and thanks for sharing! Stay happy and healthy my friend!!! 😊❤

    As always, very good tips Ben! I myself tend to stock heavily. I do it just because I like to see a lot of fish in my tanks. It does help spread aggression, but requires more tank maintenance. I do have Mbuna in each of my tanks also and they are very aggressive, but I love them and enjoy the squabbling. Also, I like to buy a lot of juvenile fish because of the price and love watching them grow and get color. So I do have some females in there and it definitely gets the males fired up, but it also causes a lot of aggression but I enjoy watching the chase lol. I also have two breeding tanks started a yellow blaze breeding tank and a blueberry OB breeding tank.

    I got my first African cichlid tank set up a little while ago! I watch your videos all the time and love the colours of your guys so obviously I had to join the dark side too 😂 the South/Central Americans are great, but the colour explosion from the peacocks and haps are something else! 😎 Keep up the good work buddy!

    Ben,
    Great tips sir. I currently don’t keep any AF cichlids. I just keep CA SA cichlids. You should do a tips video on CA SA cichlids. That would be cool to learn your trials and errors the good and bad. I am currently growing out a black tiger Oscar with a little bit of orange spots. He is so cute and growing fast. I picked up a geo Altifrons he is so little like 1 in or so. I like watching the fish grow and color up. I can’t wait to move my Oscar in my 5ft tank. He needs to get bigger to be able to handle the Severums and green terror in the tank. Love the video.

    I too keep African Cichlids.. I have a mix of Haps and Peacocks in a 75 gallon grow out. Moving them to a 210 in about a month. I essentially do most of what you do, all males (although I think I have a female dragon blood that I got as a "guaranteed male"), plenty of filtration (2 FX 6's - I know it's a lot for a 75 gallon but it'll be perfect for the 210 and already seeded with BB), light feeding, weekly water changes, I feed a mix of all the northfin pellets (krill, cichlid, veggie all mixed together) and occasionally shrimp and bug bite treats. They are doing well and slowly coloring up 😊

      Love how a 75 for AC keepers is a “grow out.”

      Oh I have a lot of juveniles in there. I have 30 peacocks and haps. I know they CANNOT live in that size tank long term that's why I am getting a 210 with 6 feet of swimming length.

    one of my tanks is an mbuna tank, 125 G of fun and stress all in one. I have over 80 fish in the 125, aggression is tamped down but I do have occasions where my elders tend to want to lock up, but that last maybe a few minutes and they go back to their corners. I have a mix of females and Males, so I haven't bought fish in years, I scoop up the female when they are holding and grow out the fry. I have my tank full of Lave Rock (great hiding places). I use a FX6 on this tank and a shark Pro (all sponges). Earlier I mention stress, Ben is correct, the wrong diet can put you in a world of hurt, I've lost fish to M Bloat, fighting and old age. So with that said I feed my fish strictly veggie foods and I even go by zucchini, and prepare for them. When (not if) I run into issues I have a 55G Hospital/grow out tank. Here is where all my fish (African and other fish I have) spend time when they are sick, quarantine, growing or isolated live for a few weeks. With my tanks water changes are a must, Mbuna poop like crazy, I've been in the middle of sand vac and I have to go back over an area I just vac because they all huddle and decide I'm not done and poop some more. Water changes are every two weeks. All Ben tips are spot on, the feed part is most important when keeping Mbunas.

    Nice video. Your mention of a killer fish brings back memories. Back in the 80's, I got into this hobby. There was no internet. I had a community tank with 20 small goldfish, a gourami, a clipper barb and some endlers. Then I added a paradise fish because it looked so "pretty"! The following morning, I saw a quarter of the fish population dead! The rest huddled up in one corner of the tank with most of their fins and scales off! And the paradise fish was swimming around the rest of the tank. I did what you said and got rid of it ASAP.

    • @BenOchart
      @BenOchart  День назад +1

      Ouch. I didn’t realize paradise fish could be that aggressive 😲

      @@BenOchart Now that I think of it, I believe it was a Jewel cichlid, not Paradise. I'm always mixing them up. Anyway, I learnt my lesson the hard way.
