Nice tutorial KRE! Patcher has really peaked my interest lately. I'm working on creating a multi FX plugin, and am currently looking into ways to change the order of a serial FX chain via fruity formula controller & your videos help inspire new approaches to take. Thank you for sharing 🙏🏿🙏🏿
Thanks for the comment! Yes Formula Controller is a game changer, especially if you are mathematically inclined. I can imagine that when you're changing FX order, the audio routing gets exponentially messier the more effects you add! Good luck!
Awesome tutorial, really easy to follow along and I learned pretty much everything I now know about the Control Surface from just this video 😆 Hope you get back around to RUclips some day with more tutorials. As other people said already your teaching style is great! Also, that track at the end your testing the stuff on, is that yours? Sounds fantastic with all the textures going on
Thank you! That's a very cool detailed, concrete and clear explanation! So, may I use this x-y-z controller for my gtr pedalboard for switching between two or three different AMPs? I tried doing this in Fruity Formula but each time both of my ODs turned on or off simultaneously instead of switching.
First of all, great stuff and thank you for these videos. I use pacher to make my own and also modefie sometimes somme verry expenssive plugins. You can do anythig. But I was wondering: What about the HQ, oversampling and linear phases in these nonlinear processes? If I introduce somme changes in EQ using one or two parameters, like slight HP or shelf filter with the Cliper going up, and gentle 180-560Hz cut when the Expender goes extremely up, for example do I put another separate EQ2 for each W-shaper, or can I use the output ones and conect the Fq control to Z on the XYZ controller? Plus, may be anti-aliasing LP filter at 20K on the output EQ2 afterb the wave shaper, do I put on the linear phase on evry EQ2 or just the one doing the Eqing. And than what about the latency isue? Please, please, 🙏🙏🙏 can you make a video testing some of your plug-inns in plug-inn doctor? Showing the best setings for oversampling and linear phases. That's crucial for masterin and sum BUSes processing. Turn on the phase curve in EQ2 and see what it does to phase shift especially with sharp HP and LP filter and on the sum Bus a slight shift in phase cancels out some FQ because there is a lot going on ther. And it's verry audible. Thank you in advance and thank you for this video. You can also listen to my start to finish track on YT, type in "Ras Stingray - Abundant state of empathy". of that one I'm proud. You can do all that just using Maximus within pacher all controles are at one place. Softclip: Mast Comp-off or expand the comp curve linear diagonally to right up corner: A-sat. left 0.1- 0.2, Trh: - 0.10 and then PUSH the post gain untill you hear dist, then dial back a dB or 2; Expander: complete off low and high; Mid: make tha same curve as in your expander. Maximus is basically the multiband wave shaper with the ATT and REL, so you can play with that also. Latency Dell off or less than the default if you are not compressing muliple bands and limiting master and there is wet/dry knob for bands mixing. You can do the multibandn processing put the !Lin-Phase on!. Don't compress at the mastering stage. If you saturate the highs and mids together it really rounds tham up together but then you have to do the same expansion and conection for the controles on each band. (low off) I use Fq splitter sends lin-ph, other analogue emulating plug-inns and processing on separate channels plus MID and SIDE separately. put the presets for downloading I can modifie somme and send you back. And yes, you can do it professionally (mix and master) on your own. Sorry for my English. Tnx again so much.
Why not use fruity mute 2 instead of fruity balance for the bypass knob? It only works with polar on/off values so you don't have to worry about the leveling
This is an incredible tutorial. Super in depth and inspired me to make my own stuff in Patcher. One question, I'm working on a simple effect rack to have an all-in-one place for effects I add on basically every sound (EQ, Compressor, Saturation) and I want to add a width knob. The plugin I'm using for adding width is Infected Mushroom's Wider, but when the amount is set to 0% it makes the sound mono. I don't want to add width necessarily to every sound I add the effect rack too, but I don't want to make them mono. I was wondering if there is a way to set it so that turning the knob a little bit (even just 1%) could turn on the effect but it would stay off otherwise. If you have a way to do this, that would be great! Otherwise, that's okay. I can just make a button to turn on and off the plugin. Thank you so much!
Hi oakdll, I figured out something that should be able to help you. I don't have the Wider plugin, but I played around in Patcher and got the right setup. You'll need a knob for the Width, two Fruity Balances to handle the audio switching, and an XYZ Controller to do the math. Enable X, Y, and Z inputs and outputs in the XYZ Controller, and connect your knob to all three. Make the X start at 80 and pretty much instantly drop to zero, and then connect X output to the Fruity Balance that will be your bypass to go around the Infected Mushroom plugin. Back in XYZ Controller, make the Y start at 0 and pretty much instantly go to 80, and connect Y to the Fruity Balance that goes into the plugin. Finally, make Z whatever curve you like for the width of your plugin, and connect it to the Infected Mushroom width connector. Here's a diagram I made and uploaded to Imgur: i.imgur.com/FAF23Ln.jpeg The idea is, when the knob is at zero, the bypass Fruity Balance sends your signal straight past. As soon as you move the knob to any setting, the bypass drops to zero and the Fruity Balance into the Wider plugin jumps to 80, sending audio into the Wider plugin. And of course the knob is simultaneously controlling the actual Width knob in the plugin using the Z section of XYZ Controller. Hope that's helpful for you! I would love to hear back from you if it works or if you have any difficulty. Thank you for your kind words about my video!
@@krednb Thank you so so much! That worked perfectly, and gave me insight on how to use XYZ Controller. You have a level of understanding of XYZ Controller I will likely never learn, so massive props to you. It's super cool that you are still responding to peoples niche questions in detail on this video you posted a year ago. Thank you so much.
Hey I appreciate your comment. It's true that I was simplifying my explanation in the video, and the way I described it definitely sounds more like what upward compression is. There's lots of confusion around these terms. However, as I understand things, what's actually going on in Waveshaper isn't upward compression but actually just another form of saturation. The difference is that compression (upward or downward) doesn't affect the shape of individual wave cycles, just their amplitude (volume). Saturation (wave-shaping distortion) actually modifies the shape of the waves themselves, introducing harmonics. The process in the video that I describe as "expansion" is a form of saturation that distorts sine waves closer to a square shape, introducing harmonics. This process isn't upwards compression but can produce very similar results. I hope that's helpful, and I'm sorry that my explanation in the video isn't 100% accurate! And also feel free to correct me if I missed something.
Couldn't you just use the pre and post amp on the wave-shaper for faking the threshold? That's effectively the same thing as what you was doing with the EQ's main levels. It might save on resources to simplify the plugin like that.
How does the ILGlyfs font magically appear in the fonts menu in patcher? Obviously every ttf you have installed on your machine does not appear there, so there must be an extra step to get it to show up besides just installing it?
is there a way to make a audio plugin that is able to have different presets within this patcher plugin im trying to put my vocal presets in a plugin but i dont know how to do any coding
Hey man, I have a question regarding patcher which is not related to this video. So when I click the "car" button for example i get the sound of the song in a car, but my problem is how can i visually "declick" all the other buttons. Basically how can I make one button deactivate all the other buttons in the interface so that only one button is active at a time. Thank you so much in advance ❤
Hi friend, unfortunately I don't think what you want is possible. If Patcher allowed feedback, you could have pressing some buttons activate/deactivate other buttons, but unfortunately this isn't allowed. This is a common request in the Image Line forums, so maybe this will change in the future.
And I have another question...1st - when I try to resize the surface according to the size of my plugin, there is a border where this resizing stops and I have to stretch THE PLUGIN to the patcher border. 2nd - when I load this patcher preset (or plugin) again, this resizing gets back to some default patcher size and the plugin looks with some working space except for its interface... How may both be cured?
You can help fix some resizing issues by going to the Map tab, right clicking on blank area, and enabling "remember tab sizes." Other than this, resizing things is pretty tricky and will take some trial and error.
