I agree with the comments. Best tutorial out there. Thank you! I wish I could show you a pic of my finishes rug. I used regular rope, made a template similar to yours, and ended up doing six pass throughs. I absolutely love it on our 1985 Beneteau First.
Got the idea to make a mat after reading the Marlinspike sailor by Hervey Garret Smith, but found the instructions not to be clear enough. I came to RUclips for help and found this-fantastic tutorial! It was very easy to follow. Made a lovely mat with our old main halyard :>
@@JustALittleFurther Yea, if anything, it sparks the desire to start rope projects :), which is okay! This is our finished mat: merveilles.town/@rek/105357923642234008 thx again~ our rope was much longer, so we had to do 6-passes XD.
This is the most helpful tutorial on these rugs I've seen so far. Thank you for the upload. I've been wanting to make one for my Great Lakes porch decor but it just seemed overwhelming until now. The wood template and nails are a great idea.
Question: If someone had a longer thinner rope like a actual climbing rope that was left over for a climbing mat. I could just technically use one end until I run out and then whatever space is empty in between I could use the other line to finish correct I don't have to alternate lines back and forth?
I've actually done just this with an old climbing rope. It takes more time and work, because you will have to complete 4-5 loops, but it comes out nice. Be sure to stitch all the loops together as the last step. Good luck!
Hola!!
Hi Kristen, I’ve never made one that large. The nail pattern would be the same but on a much larger scale. Maybe 2-3 times as much rope? Good luck… let me know how you do.
It’s an iterative process. Start at one end and begin taking out the slack, working towards the other end. You may have to repeat the process 2-3 times, but eventually all the slack will be worked out. Have to be patient. Good luck!
hi just want to ask...would this hold its shape even when machine washed?i want to make one but i would like to use fabric instead of rope..pls i hope youd answer my question.thank you very much
I’ve never made one from fabric, so I’m not sure. My guess is that it would be okay, but you will need to straighten it up afterwards. I’d wash in cold water and not use a dryer. If you make it, please let everyone know how it turned out.
Yes..Thank you very much for noticing and answering my question. I plan to use a braided fabric so it would have some stiffness. I will surely update how it will turn out. Thanks again. I love your video. Your instructions are easy to understand. But I still watched it more than a few times already.
Yes, I’ve made the mat from twine as well, and the pattern just needs to be scaled down. The ends of the line will have to be glued instead of stitched. Good luck on the project.
will this work with a 90 meter 8.5 mm climbing rope? Obviously I would have to expand the pattern, but will it be easy to tighten up if I make the pattern to large? Hope my question makes sense. thx
Hi Raymond, you can download a copy of the how-to book which includes a printed pattern here: justalittlefurther.com/ebooks/how-to-make-a-nautical-rug David
If you are still interested in a printable pattern for the nautical rug, it is now available at www.justalittlefurther.com. Sorry it took so long to get it done.

Chandra Kanta, since most of the line on our boat was double braid, this is what I used for the most part. Three strand line will also work. Hope this helps.
This is a very informative and well-structured video. Thank you so much!
Thanks for the great feedback. Glad you liked it!
This is the best clip that I’ve ever seen. It is the easiest way to follow. Very useful to me. Thank you very much.

Thanks for the feedback! I also started with the Marlinspike Sailor. It’s a great book, but doesn’t always have enough detail.

Thanks for the great tutorial
Made my first one with 35m 10mm double braid
Came out with 6 loops
Glad it turned well!
That's very interesting. I feel like a better pattern can be made for it.
How much line (length) should I use with a 1-inch line to make a mat about 3 1/2 foot wide?
Whew - 1" line is bigger than I've ever used. I'd guess about 50-55 feet. If you decide to make it, would you send us some feedback? Thanks
Would like to know what I have to do to get the template for the Nautical rug? Am not interested in anything else. Thank you

I want to make one but I want it to be larger. I was thinking 3ft by 6ft? How do I set up my nails and pattern and how much rope do I need?

How do you adjust size of mat ?
Especially larger /wider
There are two options for making it larger: Use larger line or complete more loops than the three shown in the video.
newly subscribed your video was very clear and easy to understand thanks for sharing
Скажите, пожалуйста, как расчитать сколько метров веревки нужно на коврик 60 на 40 см?
It is really very beautiful I love it very much I will try it in home
Happy New Year... from New Zealand ..!
Thanks , question is size , because I'm making a Matt for a model boat out of twine. Do I copy the pattern 3 inches??
Yes, I’ve made the mat from twine as well, and the pattern just needs to be scaled down. The ends of the line will have to be glued instead of stitched. Good luck on the project.

LivingLifeWithAaron cut
Yes it will work with 8.5mm rope, but you will have to make 4 or 5 passes instead of 3. It just takes more patience to get it tightened up evenly.
i don’t think i’ve ever seen a 90 meter rope. linking pitches must be epic
Where can I get the printable pattern?

Awesome work🙏🙏🙏🙏
I was not able to find the pattern
It’s available at www.JustaLittleFurther.com ... select the Publications tab, then click on the ebook button.
Muy bonito. Gracias. Lo haré.
How many feet of rope is needed for this?
Hi jamnican, I use between 42' and 50' of rope. It can vary depending on how tight you make it.
@@JustALittleFurther thank you so much its really lovely and your tutorial is the only one i can really understand. Have a lovely Christmas.
