The song in its core is an abolitionist song. The writer, Julia Ward Howe, was an abolitionist. Even in the song itself, it has abolitionist lyrics in it. Such as "As he died to make men holy, let us die to make men free." Even the tune it was based on, "John Brown's Body" Was a song praising abolitionist John Brown. So no, it is not scummy, it is celebration.
