Belle Featurette - Behind The Painting (2014) - Gugu Mbatha-Raw Movie HD
BELLE is inspired by the true story of Dido Elizabeth Belle (Gugu Mbatha-Raw), the illegitimate mixed race daughter of Admiral Sir John Lindsay (Matthew Goode). Raised by her aristocratic great-uncle Lord Mansfield (Tom Wilkinson) and his wife (Emily Watson), Belle's lineage affords her certain privileges, yet her status prevents her from the traditions of noble social standing. While her cousin Elizabeth (Sarah Gadon) chases suitors for marriage, Belle is left on the sidelines wondering if she will ever find love. After meeting an idealistic young vicar's son bent on changing society, he and Belle help shape Lord Mansfield's role as Lord Chief Justice to end slavery in England. Кино
Dido in that painting is extremely beautiful and exquisite! With those eyes and lips and face shape, she would be a supermodel in our time! Lol
R Gonzales lol yes I couldn't agree more
She reminds me of a model that was on Love Island once, I think her name was Sophie. She was mixed too and has the same small but cute face.
The faces in the paintings by this artist tend to be elongated. It’s beautiful but the likeness of the sitters has been adapted to the artists taste.
There was a painting at the slave museum Jamaica wharf that touched me. It was of the mixed race, adopted son of British aristocrats. His father brought his pregnant mother to England, sold her to his relatives on the understanding that the child would be freed. After learning that his birth mother had been sold back into slavery, the young man rejected his adopted parents and died fighting in the Haitian revolution. I tried to find the painting online, but couldn't. His is a story that should be told.
THIS SHOULD BE A MOVIE!!!
I agree what was his name
What slave Museum in Jamaica?
The “adoptive” father was most likely his bio father.
This is a movie I wish I could unwatch..... Just to watch it again for the first time. Simply beautiful
I wish I had chance to watch it
Swazi Lady exactly
Lmao You scared me there for a minute
How about instead of saying he treated her well "even though she was black"...we could feel and say "even though others were prejudiced against blacks". Like it's a different sentiment. The first way the flaw is in being black. The second puts the flaw where it belongs.
Coden11 I agree with you. There’s nothing wrong with her being of a black heritage. It’s the perception of what a black person is and the fact that she was illegitimate.
hellotychelle yeah! Thanks! Easy to miss but that shift in perspective...so important. We have internalized our devaluation.
SHE was AN ENGLISH GIRL BORN ON ENGLISH SOIL TO A ROYAL AND A BONDED FEMALE...THATS it. Its society that place bullshit position above intelligence or practicalities BACK then
As a REAL man who did love her mother HE CLAIMED HER AS HIS OWN WITH ALL THE TITLE AND PRIVILEGES ACCORDED HER..
SHE LIVED A GOOD LIFE with the love of her granduncle and aunt...He schooled her and taught her art and music like the aristo women of her day but even more.... so she could think more than most women in her position during those times. Since she inherited the sum of 1 mill a yr from her father .Her granduncle didn't think DIDO needed to marry ..but because of her position ,beauty and inheritance ..ENGLISH MEN did desire her.
English people even now don't really give a crap about colour.
yes
You're smart. Thank you.
This really is a stunning painting
Just saw this film with my wife....remarkable, extremely well crafted with love, a haunting music score, and never even thought of looking at my watch! GO SEE IT!
can you please tell me where to find this film online?!
nicky nm I saw it at the theater...I do not know how to find it on line
nicky nm you can watch it here: viooz.co/movies/24672-belle-2013.html
OMG!! This movie was O-MAZING, filled with deep messages and romance. I urge you all to go see it. Seriously.
Gugu is a magnificent beautiful actress. She is wonderful and happy and attractive. She should be listed in the the top 10 list of talented beautiful actresses
amazing how dido looks real in this painting..she was cute as can be..
I saw the movie and it was absolutely wonderful!! There is nothing like seeing it on the big screen, especially the original portrait shown at the very end. (Hint: Don't rush out of the theatre when the movie is over). It will definitely become a part of my DVD collection once it's available for purchase!
Tbh the young Dido in the film is very beautiful
Brilliant film! More films of such untold stories, please!
Awesome movie...Well written, great acting. A must see 👌🏽
A beautiful master piece i would watch it over and over again, i wouldn't change a thing love has no color
BEAUTIFUL STORY
I’m here cause of art class and we had to answer a few questions about the painting and I would honestly love to watch this movie
No painting effects me emotionally and mentally than this painting. I feel so much love for Elizabeth and I hope that one day she will return and never be enslaved ever again.

I love this already, and I am so excited to watch this! I think that this story about a girl who is confused about where she belongs, and to which part of herself she should be true to or be ashamed of, could also touch a lot of people who are mixed, my best friend is mixed with white and black and she had this problem in her younger years. And I think that this would probably speak to people who find themselves in a similar situation
...
Buffy Parker Why does your sister have issues ? Is she your sister or is she not ? Does she feel isolated or is she part of your family . I grew up with two black brothers that were adapted and raised by white families and they had no issues . They would laugh at the idea of being different .
Great movie good story I think everyone should watch & understand the story of Dido Elizabeth Belle👏
the most powerful movie ive seen :D
I LOVE IT! & ALSO BEING A MIXED RACE :] LOVE ITTTTTTTTT
I feel so emotional, everytime l see this movie
This movie is so underrated
Not unusual at all many Westindian planters sent their mixed race children to be educated and married in the UK. The Barratt Brownings were Jamaicans of mixed heritage.
I saw this film on the Red Box new releases list a few days ago . I was interested so I looked it up here on youtube . I am reserving a copy right now .
Loved this movie
Cant wait for this!
I loved it
Can't wait to see this but I would honestly rather see a movie made about Queen Philippa of Hainault the 1st Black Queen of England. There were actually 2 Black queens. But people say the second queen Catherine's Moorish DNA were quite watered down with white Blood. But Phillippa was definitely from a Black Moorish family who bought a German title after fleeing the reconquest of Spain by Europeans. We've seen so many slave films already. Though this is a untold story. Why doesn't someone show the story of an actual Black women who ruled England.
But Dido wasn't a slave. She was half-black, and an English aristocrat, an heiress. The film does revolve around a slavery case however.
Just a question for my knowledge. You acknowledged that there were two alleged black queens of England. What about Charlotte Mecklenburg-Strelitz? She looks black in paintings.
I don't know about the second black queen you cite but although Philippa was born into the English Royal Family she was never Queen of England . She was married off to the King of Portugal and was the Queen of Portugal but never England .
HerrWagnerfreund Her family history clearly says they bought they're tittle from the then Holy Roman Empire after they were expelled from Spain for being African MOORS who were suspected of still being Muslim. Rich Moors and Spaniard Jews bought tittles all over Europe after the conquistador. READ THE HISTORY!
HerrWagnerfreund Eurocentric lies Middle Easterners made up the smallest percentage of the Moorish Empire they were mostly members of the Sultan's entourage, family and doctors. They were only given the Sultanate because of their relationship to Mohammed. The 1st Sultan of Andalusia was a Arab prince who was exiled to Africa. His ENTIRE Army was made up of Black Africans. The majority of Moors were Tuaregs from Africa it's a fact. I'm sorry that Africans ruling southern Europe for 700 yrs annoys you but you can't change history to match your racist ideas of what Africans are capable of. Lol why are white people so agitated by their ancestors lack of importance in the ancient world? An save the points about Rome or Greece you'r not Mediterranean.
I enjoyed this movie.
Love this movie♥️
Lindo vídeo. Algunos comentarios Chéveres. Otros... Otros explican por qué el mundo está tan retorcido.
Lady Elizabeth Murray was the great grandmother of Denys Finch-Hatton *his romantic love story was depicted in movie called "Out of Africa"
When will this come out i want to watch this in the cinamas omg so excited

I don't believe it was so much as he was progressive as he loved Belle as his niece and realized she was part of their and his family.
Love love this movie,l wish l knew her
She is biracial. Do not erase biracial people.
Kate Western she's black
not really her father was white English/Scottish aristocracy..so it makes no sense to call her black. Otherwise IF she looked liked her cousin would she be black?? Considering her mother was black.
@@jenelleedwards2911 She may have black skin..but her father was white...so that makes her bi racial..just like Bob Marley.!
African-Americans have been erased as biracial and called black since slaverys one drop rule. She’s black 🗣
If that case we are all biracial. But the world seen her as BLACK.
Saw this G L O R I O U S movie 3 weeks ago, and WILL go see it again this weekend with my GF's. It was SO painful, uplifting, heartbreaking, liberating, and inspirational. GO SEE THIS MOVIE! Please show your support and interest.
I can't even bring myself to try to imagine how terrified, confused, lonely, and torn Dido must've felt. I pray that it's TRUE that she lived a peaceful, fulfilled and happy life.
Does anyone know what became of her sons?
tuutts39 - Dido and John married and had a comfortable life (with his position and her inheritance.) Dido and John had 3 sons within a 10 year period. Dido died in 1804. It was stated that it was from natural causes. I do not know the reason why she died. It could have been influenza, or Childbirth (many women died having children in that time) or anything. John was left with 3 sons under 10 years of age. He did not remarry right away, but he did remarry after a while. He had a son and a daughter with his new wife. I read that the last descendant of Belle died in South Africa in the 1970s. He was listed as a White South African. Belle's legacy was to be the one to help end slavery.
We will always be thankful that she lived and yes I am sure that she had many trying times, but so do we all. I am thankful to learn about her and John. They loved each other and married in a Church. They Christened their children in the Church they married in--and they were wealthy. They had time to be together and that is a good memory for you to keep. She lived and inspired her uncle to make rulings to help end slavery. For that, I am grateful.
simplejonesl thank you for the information ..love this movie..it has to rank among my best watch movies
Paul Liew You are welcome. I don't know if her other sons had offspring. This information was not listed. I read that some of her sons had joined the British army, and being "men" who knows if they had offspring. Dido is a product of her father falling in love with a slave and he made her his mistress. He took care of her and from what I found out, he bought her a home in America. Dido also had a brother by her father. What is very moving--is that this man never had offspring with his white wife (and these children are his only children--he provided for both of them). He showed his love for Dido by bringing her to England and asking his uncle to raise her. He wanted his daughter to have the best upbringing. I believe that Dido's mother had died at this time--because she came to her uncle as a young child.
I found out that because they showed her such favor and love, they (her family) were reprimanded by some in society for treating her as an equal--so I believe this is why they did not let her dine with them when they had company--I believe they had to pretend to society--at that time, that they did not show her favor (while privately--they did) Dido and Elizabeth were friends and from what I read--this family loved Dido. Dido could have great-great grandchildren (out there) as I stated, it was thought that her last "known" descendant was the one in South Africa--however, who knows?
@@simplejonesl8754John didn't remarry quick that's true but he get a maid pregnant real quick after Dido died .. he didn't marry this maid until she bore him 2 children 🙄 he was a scoundrel and not respectable, but then again he was a lowly servant, they don't have lives according to show like Bridgerton
If you guy's didn't know Tom Felton is in the movie
She was mixed, not just black
I’ve got this painting on my wall
I saw the sincerity of a white person with a Soul....great history movie ❣️💫💜
I also saw the movie and will watch it again❣️
The only historical inaccuracy in the movie was that the Elizabeth married before Dido
this entire movie is historicly inaccuratee
only? 90% of the movie is historical Inaccuracy.... Dido wasn't left anything by her father, she married a servant not a lawyer. just based on this cold hard fact the movie couldn't even exist
This refers to old posts . I personally think white Black yellow etc doesn't mater what colour we are we are all humans and we didn't chose to be the colour we are just except people for who they are . My grandchildren have different fathers from different ethnic backgrounds but I would never think of them any other way except for who they are my moto is live and let live we are all different in some way .
2:41 tom wilkinson : "lord mansfield certainly not from the aristocracy"
Lord Mansfield or William Murray was born on 2 March 1705, at Scone Palace in Perthshire, Scotland, the fourth son of the 5th Viscount of Stormont and his wife, Margaret, née Scott. How do you think his nephew 7th Viscount Stormont will inherit his title lol....
Do everyone on this inaccurate movie just being lied to? to the point that the actor think Lord mansfield son of 5th Viscount of Stormont born in Scone palace is "certainly not from the aristocracy" it's true he work his way up but he is literally born into one of the most prestigious aristocratic family lol...
The greatest debate of all mixed people: are you white or black?
No debate. We are both.
We are both. Binary definition of race emerged in colonial period, when it was about citizen/slave.
Now all people are citizens and being mixed race is just like being of any mixed ethnicity within one race.
They are black always been black now they wanna call them mixed race
@@isabelfperdomo this film was set in Britain. No one drop rule. Birth certificates do not indicate race in Britain. In France they do not ask race during a census because they say everyone there is French.
There was never any debate period. If you are mixed you are mixed! You are both or other. You can argue with DNA. One drop laws were invented to prevent mixed race people from having any rights to there white fathers assets. Least we forget my people in Louisiana. So much mixing created another race in the thousands. Laws created to steal land property, plantations, businesses, re-enslave free people of color. This is the true reason for that ridiculous one drop law. Twenty years ago I read an article in the journal of sociology that stated that approx 70% of so-called white Americans had at least one black ancestor. If one drop makes you black well then we are a nation of black folks! Everyday we see examples of this. And in fact there is a real possibility that among that % the very persons making that stupid law were black and passing. This is a perfect example: in an article I read recently stated in one of the Carolinas race was determined in this way, if you can’t see the African on the face, you can be white, if you can see any trace at all then they are blackperiod
So passer by question here... Is this question based on or inspired by the darker lady in the portrait? As in is all they are going on a portrait or are there diaries and other literary accounts.
Why is she sort of floating in the painting?
They really didn't want her there and that was the the creative idea of the artist to please the family the show that she's on lower-level not at the painting supposed to predict different levels different status that's why she's not staying side-by-side with exactly with her and that the girl is more educated than Dido and the reason that she was floating to let the viewers know those who cast the eyes upon the painting that she doesn't have a stable position they're in the family or in life
Their heads are actually at almost exactly the same level.
biracial is still black by law if you mixed with any black. that's why they call her black
Not in the U.K., of coarse most mixed race people identify as black but it's not by law that they must do so
+Thabo Moyo if your any perceo of black then yes
+Thabo Moyo I'm talking about America anyways but it wouldn't matter where I go
oh hush
I'm from the south and there is a one drop rule ... if you have one drop of black you are black. Although I'm mixed and my brother and I have the same parents his birth certificate says Caucasian and mine says negroid my parents were married when I was born but not when my brother Texas law race lays with the father unless not married my mother is white so my brother is white
what is the name of the painting?
Has no name just the descendants of Kenwood house ..SO Paintings were like a record of position and family.
It does not appear to have a title. " Dido and Elizabeth " would be appropriate. They were painting as equals in status.
No specific name, I’ve got this on my wall, I enjoy telling my mates the story of it, I’d call it Dido Belle and Elizabeth Murray
So what do u call all the blk ppl or families that resembles dido belle n have no white parentage but blk, what do you refer to them as?
What happened to Dido?
She married about age 35, had a happy marriage; They had twin boys, and another son, and she died young about the age of 40.
real dido was left with nothing upon her father's death ( he left 1000 pound to 2 of his other illegiitimate kids from different woman), she was given 500 pound upon her grand uncle's death, and she married a servant and living among the servants in london
I passed as white on RUclips 2021#
The turban with the feather and clothes are Indian (Sikh). They were trying to pass her off as Indian.
Which doesn't make any sense.
@@adoremee because the statement is silly. Indian women do not wear turbans.
@@gavinreid5387 you know white people don't care if they would they wouldn't name native american indian, then calledd it west indies. this is seen as exotic of the east
@@gavinreid5387 oh you think white people care? they dressed up as caricature of eastern fashion, im surprised they didn't add monkey too on her shoulder
Does anyone know why Belle is pointing to the right side of her face/ jaw????? Her job duties were to over see the dairy and chicken department. Maybe she is trying to tell us to not eat grapes or certain fruits????? Please make a comment on your thoughts!
Maybe she is telling us to eat the fruits!!
In renaissance art a pointing finger indicated the most important subject of the composition.
I should not have married, umm at all.
Christ..
Why is she holding up A bowl of fruit from servant and behind the girl just like a servant would
Because the family didn't want her to be equal as the white girl showing the difference because it would look kind of odd and be a big problem to the family and huge huge property family and those who cast the eyes upon the picture seeing a black person do they cannot standing side-by-side with a book cheat to get behind the white girl to show her the level that she's on you know she black get back
You noticed she is wearing a head band? I read that the halfbreed was so better looking than the White women that they started complaining about the mixed breed so they mandated that in public the mixed women should wear head dress.
@@rosebellcarter2695 - That was in New Orleans where that law was passed, not in the UK where she was. And that is not a head band, it is a turban. That is actually an Indian (Sikh) turban and clothes she was wearing. They were trying to pass her off as an Indian (from India).
It almost looks as though she's pushing Dido out of the photo..
And why try to make her look Indian, when she's not Indian?
@Kate Western exactly everytime those black ladies was calling her black I wanted to slapped them, yes she's part black so they should label her as such she's mixed,I'm mixed as well.yes biracial, mixed and multiracial people are the best and we will always be other races beautiful to I'm saying mixed race and multiracial people the best because we the most exotic diverse group in the world.
If she was free like any white she could be holding a book and like the white girl, but fruits mmmmh
It's believed that the artist painted her wearing the turban/tignon & hold exotic fruits to portray her as exotic & foreign. Also painting her slightly behind her cousin to show her lower caste .
@@autierretatu2993 in any case, she is still painted at equal level if not higher than Elizabeth which was extremely rare if not the first case. Any non-white person was painted on their knees or crouched well below a white man/woman. Dido was painted on equal level which is why it is so significant.
@@OceanStarSenpai it was painting and she wasn't equal at all. also lady elizabeth is seating with a book, while dido rushing with fruit and flower
@@OceanStarSenpai a standing person could never be on equal level to a person who is sitting... it's a clever way to say know your place... same level but actually lower..
She is mixed not black.
She was a beautiful biracial woman... and that is getting erased here.
Are yr children mixed?
Vanilla Smoothies why does it bother you that she is called black?
I think that what is being lost here - is that at that time - all biracial people were considered legally to be non-white - and therefore the same as their non-white parent's race. society considered her black. not biracial. her being biracial was her OWN reality to decipher - and with very little help. and that part of her life is shown in the movie. she was not part of white society because she was black. she was not part of black society because she was high-born of a white father. her only solace was the love she had from her family - who wished to do right by her and protect her - and themselves - from the prejudice of society. no part of this was easy or simple - not for Belle, not for her sister, not for the aunt and uncle that raised them both. but they DID rise to the situation in such a beautiful way. for her aunt and uncle - it was a process - her aunt wished to hide it, her uncle wished to protect her and he had his own ambitions. in the end, he did what was right, not sure her aunt would ever have done that if it were entirely up to her. but Belle - after working it all out on her own - she embraced BOTH her heritages - and was instrumental in helping her uncle to rise to his best as well. a beautiful story, all the better for the fact it was 100% true.
Ntandoyenkosi Zungu that’s what I’m wondering......
See y’all not gotta play like black peoples weren’t all threw Europe.. B4 slavery ok
there can be billion black people in europe, it will never make European culture blac culture so keep crying you will never be white
