computer scientist here, teaching my self electronics repair, I went through a lot of videos on RUclips to try to learn the basics of an oscilloscope and if I might need one for electronic repair, your video taught me the basics and turns out my multimeter is more than sufficient, I will get one though for poking into stuff and seeing what's really going on under the hood. Have you done a video about hooking a scope up to a circuit? Where does the ground clip go, where should you not clip it to? Simple basics like that? Thanks for another video Bill.
Hi Bill hope all is going well. Thanks for sharing this video. Just what I’ve been looking for because I fall into the category of learning and needing help. I purchased a digital one like you have but chose the 2 channel version. This video has definitely given myself a good point to start learning it’s capabilities. I will give it a go in the morning US time. I hope every now and then you toss in another class they are very helpful. Bill you stay safe and well everything here in the states is still a mess hope your country is figuring things out. 😊
The scope's event triggered sweep feature is what gives the scope it's utility in the form of graphical display of periodic waveforms or response to some input related event that occurs in time which forms the basis for measurement in the time domain and subsequent analysis
Great Video thanks. I'm looking to buy a new oscilloscope this week, I was going to get the Hantek DSO5102P but I was thinking of spending the extra money to get the SIGLENT 1104X - U instead. What do you think; would I be getting the extra value for the extra cost. Would appreciate your input. I see that you have both of these in your workshop, so you would know. Many thanks. Graham.
Good question! Both are really very good, I think the Siglent has more features plus a more intuitive interface, that said, the Hantek is pretty good. If you have the money then the Siglent, but is it twice as good as the Hantek? I would have to say no. If you got the Hantek would you be forever looking over your shoulder at the Siglent? Some will say that the Siglent quality is better, both instruments worked fine for me so I can't comment on that aspect. Like I say, a good question!
Hello Bill, thanks for the video. A question: You mentioned the scope can view a DC offset added to the AC waveform. When would we see something like that in practice?
Cliff, the common place to encounter this DC offset is in amplifiers, the DC being the supply voltage, and the AC being the amplified signal. It's common to see a capacitor used to block the DC between stages of the amplifier.
It's hard to listen to you because you have no idea about lecturing and explaining. I have been in electronics for 20+ years and you have me confused, not to mention those who are still learning.
If you have been in electronics for 20 years then you would have understood clearly what is being said. I’m relatively new and understood perfectly. The lecture was given in a calm and simple way.

The older analogue scopes are plain sexy; plus like all old gear they are repairable.

2 months too late, but the Siglent has 4 channels, while the Hantek probably has 2. That makes quite a difference I think. Did you buy one?
