It costs me less because my girlfriend is a native Muscovite, and knows all the cheap places to get stuff. We rented our efficiency apartment in the center of St. Petersburg for $27 a night. That's for 2 people. It was a better deal than a hostel, because we had our own kitchen, bathroom, washer and TV.
It all depends on the city and the place. For example, in Moscow, if you need fast, inexpensive and tasty food you need to climb to the upper floor of any Mall on the food court. Besides the usual McDonald's, Burger king and KFC there will always be other russian national cafes and plenty of others to choose from. There are a lot of malls or shopping centers in Moscow, almost next to every metro station (except for the very central stations) Also in Moscow there are many (well known to the locals) discount centers to buy branded clothes. Never buy at full price in regular stores :)
If I compare Russia with other European countries then it is a lot cheaper. Your estimation of $100/day seems very accurate as I along with 3 other folks spent similar amount though it covered Moscow & St Petersburg. The pink coat looks great on you. Cheers!!
Thank you for the video! I live in Russia and our prices are really low when converted to dollars, when compared with other countries. after your video, I really became convinced of this!
Looks like you're enjoying Irkutsk! Hope you have a marvelous time onward as well. If you wish to eat cheap and tasty, try the misc. Столовая that are dotted around Russia. I can recommend the one at MIPT, once you arrive to Moscow. The food is utterly tasty and quite so cheap. The chain "Teremok" is a bit more expensive, but their pelmenis are to die for.
In those more local malls I would suggest getting familiar with emergency exits. There is corruption related to these developments and corners sometimes get cut to the detriment of safety. Keep in mind evacuation route as indicated ones are sometimes blocked due to owners trying to maximize returns per square meter.
An easy and quick way to convert rubles to Canadian dollars on the run is to consider the ruble amount is Canadian cents and then double it. So 100 roubles converts to $2.05 according to a conversion program on the internet, but calling it $2.00 is close enough. 75 rubles is $1.54, but doubling 75 and considering it cents gives you $1.50, close enough. 900 rubles would be $18.00.
