BW501 and 502 are a great 80-20. I wish Bridgestone would have it in more sizes and continue refining/upgrading it with new compounds/construction tech. I continue to use it as it more than meets all my needs as an 80/20.

I think a good 60/40 tire (60% steet / 40% dirt) would be a big winner in the adventure tire market. What I'm talking about is a non-knobby quiet on the street but still almost as grippy as a knobby in the dirt tire - kind of like the TKC-70 Rocks rear and GPS front, but maybe a little better dirt grip than the GPS front. That's my current setup, but I wish there were more selection in this category. 60/40 is what seems to me to be missing from the market, but the manufacturers ignore that and keep coming out with almost useless in the dirt 80/20 adventure tires! Did the forget they what 'adventure' in the term adventure bike means?
I know you like the AX41, and I am tempted to try them, but the downsides of the AX41 I see are: 1. Q speed rating - I ride 85% of that max speed all the time, so it seems like a bad idea to pick a tire to ride so close to it's max rated speed capability. 2. soft sidewall - my adventure bike has tube wheels, so it seems like a soft sidewall would be more prone to tube pinch flats, at lower dirt pressure out in the middle of nowhere, than a more sturdy sidewall. 3. it has knobbies, which means it is louder on the tar, and has less rubber contacting the tar for traction in the twisties.
You have the TKC-70 (standard) listed as 60/40 in your famous chart (too bad another entity gets all the chart's credit), but I get the feeling that the TKC-70 (standard) might be more street oriented than 60/40 - especially since you only gave it a '4' in the dirt / gravel category on your 80/20 chart - behind three other tires that are actually considered to be 80/20 tires!
Why don't the manufacturers see an opportunity in the 60/40 market? It seems to me like a non-knobby quiet on the street but still almost as grippy as a knobby in the dirt tire would be a hot seller. Your thoughts? Please comment on any of my ideas above that you think may be flawed. Cheers

    • @manybikes

The struggle is REAL! No... for real it is real. All of the percentages are garbage really. There are many 50/50 tires that are better in the dirt and others that are better on the street and therefore they really are not 50/50 ;) I do agree that there is a segment that is missing. For the adventure touring guy or daily commuter who wants to take a trail on the weekends but does not want to run on knobbies 85% of the time and who want to roll at 120 mph ;) I am that guy too...
Got to go.... I'll come back to this later.
Oh.. the TKC70 is at best an 80/20 tire ;) but Continental says it is "dirtier" than it is...

    Hi Kyle,
    I was on MAAs.
Very good tire except that it is not good in trail breaking. - Front tire is too soft on the shoulders.
I was also disappointed that the soft rubber compound on the rear shoulders is such a thin layer that it disappears fast and in practical, the second part of the lifetime is therefore just a mono compound. The 2CT+ is, so to say, a half lie.
Yes, I would be interested in these AT41 especially how they bear trail breaking.
And as the tread is very regular, I would wonder about the noice.
    Looking forward to your tests.

I have a R1250GS which I do everything with, from forest service roads to two up and twisties. It came with Anakee Adventures which I liked except for the mild noise. I then put on a set of Trailmax Mission which were fantastic mileage, decent off pavement, quiet but I hated them in the wet and cold and they weren't great handling or riding.
I thought the AT 41 would be my perfect tire, but there's one serious flaw and that's the noise. These things are LOUD at certain speeds yet very quiet at others. From 60 to 70 kph they are quite noisy, but at 112 to 135 kph the extremely loud whine is almost unbearable, even with earplugs! They work well in all conditions including gravel but I won't be re-purchasing.

Any idea when these are expected to be released to the masses? I'm running AX41s at the moment and as great as they are, I have to be honest with myself that a more road focused tyre would be more suitable. I treat the 790 like a big supermoto and I'd just like a little more rubber in contact with the road, without going for a tyre such as the trail attack 3 etc.

Great question. The rear tire has arrived but the front has not yet shown up. Until it arrives I will not be mounting them up... I do not have a public release date other than "they are on the water." From your suggested use, this AT41 might be the ticket. The Scorpion Rally STR or the TKC70 might be two other great options for you to consider. Or the AX41S... that was a fun tire!

    • @TheGrumpLee
      @TheGrumpLee 2 года назад

@@manybikes Thanks, they're some of the others which are on my consideration list, namely the TKC 70 and Rocks rear, as although it's not as frequent that I am off road, I'd still like something a little more capable. It's a tough choice as there's always a compromise and to be fair to the AX41, they actually perform quite well on the road, but they have their limitations and it makes me hold back. They're not going to last long, but I don't value lifespan of a tyre over performance.
I think the AT41 will be less capable off road than the ones mentioned, but I'm a fan of modern Bridgestones, so I'm interested to hear just how far away they are with their off road performance. Hopefully the boat gets a move on!

@Kyle - do you ever get frustrated when you ask sales reps at tire shows about the technology in the tire, like you did at 2:55 in this video, and they respond with a bunch of fluff that doesn't actually answer the question? What a dipstick! All he basically said was that Bridgestone took technology from their street and 50/50 tires to create this one in between. But to know what that even means, one would have to already know exactly what "technologies" were in the other two tires, and which of those 'technologies' Jim was referring to were incorporated into the AT41! Jim didn't mention construction or compound(s) or anything else about 'technology' that wasn't blatantly obvious from looking at it. Basically he said nothing interesting or useful. Either Jim didn't know what he was talking about, or he thinks consumers are dumb asses! Or maybe he just doesn't realize who you are and how many tire purchases you have influenced since you started your tire project at an unnamed company in 'the IE'! Frustrating interview to watch ... and thanks for doing more consumer research into adventure tires than anyone else!
