True. If we dive deeper, British capital was Kolkata. But muslims didn't like repealing the partition of Bengal, so just to appease them, British shifted it to Delhi (for being capital of islamic rulers). Otherwise Delhi was just another city after 1857. Brown sahebs continued on the thoughts of their masters.
Delhi was capital from Mahabharat era and ruled by Tomars descendent of Pandava and by Chauhans till 12th century
