You mention that the upgrade card can ONLY be used to upgrade a single spice. This differs from Century Spice Road where that card can do a total of 2 upgrades, which can be applied to one spice (2 levels) or 2 spices (1 level each). Is this accurate? Why the change in effect? Then the 3 spice upgrade is also applicable to a single spice?

I came to the comment section because I had the same question. Too bad he never replied to clarify. :( I guess I will have to do more homework to see if it's true statement or not. For others coming after this... The rule description in question is at 10:14 mark

Randy Bieri I’m sure you have figured this out by now, but the rules are quite clear and very different from Spice Road. The video is correct. The upgrade (called a conversion in Spice Road) applies to a single cube.

In my copy of the rules that came in EW.
"When playing an Upgrade card, you may upgrade a cube in your cargo hold 1 level for each cube on the card."
So this tells me that you play it just like you do in Spice Road.

@@Kankui3 they are actually worded differently, at least in the English version I have. I wonder how this ends up in different translations as the wording is pretty subtle.
In Spice Road, it says spices and the conversion (upgrade in Spice Road) is a number of actions, implying they could be to different spices or the same one. The example even shows that.
In Sand to Sea, it says "a cube" can be upgraded up to the number of levels indicated by the card, ie a single action.
I had missed this distinction the first time I read through the rules.\

Bob Netherton Both my English rule books say ‘cube’ can be upgraded. SR has the best example as it says you upgrade one cube on your card and then can do it again based on how many times a cube appears on the card. The StS just says the same thing but more specific. Shrug. I am going to try StS tomorrow for the first time. We’ve wanted to so many times but get caught up with the current stand alone or with new players etc. it’s time!
