I really like this painting because it doesn’t shy away from the reality of the violence, it shows all the blood and gore in awful detail. Most modern biographers of Herod, and some biblical scholars, dismiss Matthew's story as a literary device. Contemporary non-biblical sources, including Josephus and the surviving writings of Nicolaus of Damascus (who knew Herod personally), provide no corroboration for Matthew's account of the massacre, and it is not mentioned in the Gospel of Luke. The majority of all of our ancestors were the aggressors in these paintings. Our ancestors aren't the massacred people, but the ones who are still alive in these paintings. We should all critically interrogate our own beliefs and determine, through reason and logic, which are demonstrably false.
Just say Palestine and Israel. Love the channel man, but this is embarassing. If you were really scared of retribution you wouldn't use cute censored versions of the names of the parties involved. You're scared of your video getting demonitized.
The scene of this painting first brough to mind the massacre that happened at the Nova Music Festival and the various kibbutzes. What happened that day was not the old woman biting the finger of her aggressor or holding his blade with her bare hands, fighting helplessly back. It was a targeted massacre of innocent civilians by a terrorist organization. It's important not to forget that. That being said, the response from Israel is highly disproportional, evil, ghastly, and should be dealt with by international courts. The 3rd strongest military in the world cannot hide behind "collateral damage" when they precision strike schools, hospitals, refugee camps and border crossings. That makes them a terrorist state, by definition. No civilian on either side is responsible for the actions of their despotic leaders.
@@Sheet_music_eater A sad fact, and one history hopefully won't forget. I hope justice comes down hard on those who deserve it. Then again, Kissinger was never tried for war crimes, which shows the blatantly obscene double standard of the US. As someone who believes in western democratic values and would defend them to death, I cannot understand how some people get away with these things. It is anathema to everything we should stand for in the 21st century.
kinda weird ngl, since hamas didn't kill a bunch of babies on october 7th, especially at the music festival, but israel has massacred a toooon of babies, like I get killing civilians is bad regardless of age but its weird that you'd associate this painting w the nova festival and not all the pictures of dead babies in gaza
2:17 I think this is a bad thing to say. I don't mind Palestinians fighting back, but what Hamas does is literally terrorism and they aren't just doing this in self defence or whatever, they literally tried to kill civilians, they raped. They are not to be excused like this. To make a comparison between someone doing purely self defence and someone killing innocent civilians, even if they are themselves oppressed/whatever, is a bad thing to do imo. (Unless I misunderstood your point but yeah)
Roman ruled Judea. Jewish client king. Not "Palestine" at the time that this painting depicts. Also, why not say Palestine? Secondarily, I would encourage you to take a closer look at the elderly lady. She is not trying to stop the sword from piercing her, but the baby under her left hand. It seems clear that she is the grandmother trying to protect her daughter and grandchild. This could potentially symbolize the generational effects of such violence.
Apparently it's yet another subject that RUclips has decided people aren't supposed to talk about. The same thing happened with people bringing up Covid. The word "pandemic" was even getting people's videos flagged.
@@harharharharharharharharha240 Judea wasn't called Palestine (Syria Palaestina or "Palestinian Syria") until 2nd Century CE... So, the word "Palestina" was coined by the Romans 200 plus years after the birth of Christ.

Herod's rule marked a new beginning in the history of Judea. Judea had been ruled autonomously by the Hasmonean kings from 140 until 63 BCE. The Hasmonean kings retained their titles, but became clients of Rome after the conquest by Pompey in 63 BCE. Herod overthrew the Hasmonean Antigonus in a three-year-long war between 37 and 34 BCE, ruled under Roman overlordship until his death c. 4 BCE, and officially passed on the throne to his sons, thus establishing his own, so-called Herodian dynasty.
this painting is incredibly moving to me, the absolute chaos of the composition, the almost animalistic methods the children are being killed with, the woman stopping the sword with her own hand while biting the hand of her aggressor, the woman scratching the soldier's face, its just. fuckin hell man its powerful shit. makes me want to cry although tbh from the title i thought the name of the piece was "the massacre of the innocents for no particular reason"
You could call the location Canaan, but that involves acknowledging that land undergoing a continuous exchange of ownership since the dawn of recorded history.
Oh man, what a shame. I'm amongst your first thousands of subscribers, and I regarded you as someone who truly does their research, which I liked. I must say, this video is very well presented - a shame that it's presenting such a warped and misinformed narrative. Drawing parallels between this woman's resistance against a terrible aggressor in the painting and the massive terrorist attack on Oct. 7th is honestly disgusting. It's terrorist sympathy at its purest. Ironically, this painting closely resembles what happened on October the 7th if anything! Many hundreds of INNOCENT people just brutally butchered, raped, burned, decapitated and kidnapped by Hamas! and speaking of, this attack is literally what started this war just now. The leaders of Hamas could end this war in seconds by simply releasing the hundreds of (mostly) CIVILIAN hostages they currently hold in their dungeons! instead, they want to prolong the war as much as possible, because they know that time works against Israel here. They are as cynical as it gets. While Israel does everything in its power to avoid civilian casualties, and they employ methods never seen in modern combat to achieve this. This is evident by the unprecedented ratio of combatant to civilian casualties, not to mention the complexity of fighting in one of the most densely populated urban areas on earth. Are there many more casualties on the Palestinian side? Sure are. But why do we fail to even consider each sides intentions? Hamas's intentions towards Israel is literally genocidal, as evident by their charter, their statements and what they did on October 7th, if not anything else before that. This is the side which embodies the aggressor in this painting. In response to this attack, Israel vows to get rid of Hamas, and they target Hamas. And why do we fail to point any fingers towards Hamas? they are the de-facto rulers of the Gaza strip. Why do they not do a thing to protect their own people? build shelters for them? instead they use their billions from Qatar to build a huge network of underground tunnels to protect their own militants, store ammunitions and operate from, while welcoming the inevitable civilian deaths that arise from their own actions - because they know it makes Israel look terrible. Why do they use sites such as schools and hospitals as their military bases? Don't get me wrong, it is completely fine to criticize the way that Israel manages this war and I myself do it. I have lots of criticism about Israel and the way it treats the Palestinians way before October 7th. But presenting this matter as simply "Israel doing massacre / genocide to the Palestinians" is completely insane. Many people do believe this unfortunately, but I expected you to at least do some research about the facts before posting such pungent, but incredibly misinformed statements. I'll be glad to talk with you about this topic, if you are willing.
October seventh is nothing compared to what the Palestinians have had to go through for 76 years. Cope and seethe. Keep making this about the oppressors you are shameless
@@harharharharharharharharha240 I don't look for these things I've had the misfortune of encountering a video of two terrorists hacking some farmer's head with a hoe on the 7th. You can look it up, sure you'll find it. The claim that there's no evidence is absolutely nonsense.
@@harharharharharharharharha240 There is a way to discuss these things without going into degenerate internet remarks such as "cope and seethe". I can agree that the Palestinians have their grievances against Israel, some of them totally justified. But using these to justify a literal massive terrorist attack aimed against civilians is insane. Throughout all the Palestinians have gone through in these 76 years, they have NEVER gone through such a thing as this act of pure genocidal intention.
@@harharharharharharharharha240 Besides, by echoing this sentiment that the Palestinians are always justified in their resistance, you are actually doing them a huge disservice by attributing no agency to them whatsoever. You do nothing but cement their position as perpetual victims with no agency at all. Can you even point out a single wrongdoing of Hamas?
Can we mention “Ukraine”? Putin launched a massive missile attack on Kyiv and other cities across Ukraine during morning rush hour on July 8th. The toll so far has tallied 28 civilians killed and 112 others injured, with that number likely to grow. Kyiv, Dnipro, Kryvyi Rih, Sloviansk, Pokrovsk, and Kramatorsk, were among the areas hit and dozens of sites were obliterated. There were at least 10 explosions heard in Kyiv by witnesses on the ground. One of the missiles struck the Okmatdyt hospital, Ukraine's largest children's medical center. A nearby metro station was also targeted at a time of mass commuting.

Just say Palestine and Israel. Love the channel man, but this is embarassing. If you were really scared of retribution you wouldn't use cute censored versions of the names of the parties involved. You're scared of your video getting demonitized.
People are getting tortured and killed and you're on some "what if the youtube partner program reviewer doesn like my video"
The history repeat itself
No particular reason
In the end, it’s the Palestinian civilians who once again have to pay the price for the transgressions of those in power
@@Dimitris_Half I don't? Where did that come from? Nothing I said was in support of anything. It was anti slaughter of civilians.
kinda weird ngl, since hamas didn't kill a bunch of babies on october 7th, especially at the music festival, but israel has massacred a toooon of babies, like I get killing civilians is bad regardless of age but its weird that you'd associate this painting w the nova festival and not all the pictures of dead babies in gaza
@@Dimitris_Half Did you only read the first sentence of my post?
What a masterpiece - timeless and applicable today as it was when it was painted

Great video ❤
I love youuuuu

I think this is a bad thing to say.
Exactly. It's at this point in the video that Shawn lost all my respect.
What Israel has done is worse. What Hamas did was the mistreatment of Palestinians by Israelis for 76 years. But keep blaming the Palestinians

The Nina Simone video broke me for days and I absolutely could not not pass it forward.

This painting arose so many emotions in me
Roman ruled Judea.
Judea was only a small part of Palestine. Palestine was the Greek name given to the whole land since 6th century BC. Cope and seethe
@@harharharharharharharharha240 Judea wasn't called Palestine (Syria Palaestina or "Palestinian Syria") until 2nd Century CE... During the time of the painting it was known as "Judea" even while under Roman rule. But, it is also worth noting that the term "palestine" did not refer to a specific geographic location UNTIL the Roman application of the name in the 2nd century.

Jesus was Jewish. He was born into a Jewish family and followed Jewish customs and traditions. His teachings and activities occurred within the context of Jewish society in ancient Judea.

You could have said the name of the nation that Jesus was born in. It was Judea,
Jesus was born in Bethlehem’s Judea is only a small part of modern day Palestine so no. Also the name Palestine was known amongst Greeks since the 6th century BC. Cope and seethe 😊
@@harharharharharharharharha240 Correction accepted.
@@DoloresJNurss It was called by the Ancient Greeks as Phoenicia/Canaan. You don't need to get stand corrected. You are right all along. Read online about Judea, Bar Kockba Revolt, why the Romans changed the name of the Province of Judea to Syria Palestina by 2nd century AD. So, the word "Palestina" was coined by the Romans 200 plus years after the birth of Christ.
Well done! Absolutely agree!
The old woman in the painting is really incredible and resounds so much because I think we all know an old lady that would be the fiercest fighter.
Which massacre?
Ukraine?

The massacre of christans in nigeria?

Well said.
4 BCE, and officially passed on the throne to his sons, thus establishing his own, so-called Herodian dynasty.

this painting is incredibly moving to me, the absolute chaos of the composition, the almost animalistic methods the children are being killed with, the woman stopping the sword with her own hand while biting the hand of her aggressor, the woman scratching the soldier's face, its just. fuckin hell man its powerful shit. makes me want to cry
although tbh from the title i thought the name of the piece was "the massacre of the innocents for no particular reason"

Also no evidence of decapitation by Hamas
Great video but unfortunate you cared more about the monetization of the video rather than just saying Palestine.
And Ukraine of course
Can we mention Palestine? Israel continuously bombs hospitals
