- In this video I unbox a vintage TOMY CHATBOT toy robot from the 1980s. The box was really tatty, but the robot was in excellent condition. Chatbot is a remote controlled toy that moves around and records your voice. It's made of white plastic and has got a retro boxy shape. It also comes with a useful tray for serving you snacks or drinks. ;)
Tomy made a series of white toy robots in the 1980s including Dingbot, Flipbot, Spotbot, Hootbot, Verbot, Omnibot and the ultimate robotic servant, the Omnibot 2000.
Let me know in the comments what you think of the robot and if you have one yourself? Thanks for watching.

Vintage Chatbots never function in the 2020’s without serious work.
I LOVE THE STOP MOTION AT THE END Even though it didn't work you brought it to life with stop motion
I came here after reminiscing about the ChatBot I had as a kid. Thanks for sharing. Was hoping it would work!
Yeah, it's a shame it doesn't work. Would have made a better video. Oh well.
Heya, just saw it isn't working. I can tell you of my experience. Initially the lights in the face lit up but nothing else happened. We thought the remote was dead as was corroded and what looked like a possible LED wasn't on (not actually an LED it turned out - just a red herring). Not actually sure how we got it working though... second attempt having put all batteries in and stuff again somehow stuff just suddenly started working. Stuff worth noting (if you do get anywhere with it). For the recording to "stay" it seems the lever has to go all the way to the top - this, I note, is in the instructions you have but (lacking these) we had to figured that one out ourselves. Another interesting one. Putting the remote near it, seems to have a trigger point. i.e. at a certain distance this seems to be enough to activate the voice (without pressing the buttons). Holding it on the threshold can sometimes trigger movement either forwards or backwards. Not sure what this implies but I suspect it's something like: a continuous signal = playback, an alternating on/off signal at different frequencies triggers movement one way or the other... it may also signify that I accidentally left the remote on since yesterday... which I did XD
love your vid! too bad about the chatbot, but if you have the know-how you just might be able to get it working again. might only be a loose wire. good luck either way!
love the adaption on the secret message! :D
Verbot had a similar sized remote. I got one for Christmas one year. It never worked very good.
I think the Omni bot worked well.
Great video!! Every Robot Collector has these moments when you switch it to *[ON]* for the 1st time and nothing happens. LOL I've never liked the term _"displays well"!_ It used to really bother me to the point where if it didn't function, it wasn't displayed. After apx. 45 years of collecting I've mellowed out and I display a few of my non-working Bots. I just classify them as *_"currently under restoration"._*
Haha! I shall have to remember that. I have a few bots now that are "currently under restoration".
@@RobotElixir LOL I hear that! I've always liked your videos where you're constructing different robots...have you ever been interested in ZOIDS? I've been collecting these since the 80's when they first came out. The ZOIDS are all patterned after animals, like dinosaurs or even insects. The small guys are wind-up bots and the bigger guys take batteries. This link is to the ZOID I just bought. ruclips.net/video/u-8GG4cLg7c/видео.html
I'm discovering that ceased up through age is a thing. As in they randomly start working after some goes.
One of the good things about robots from this era is that because the electronics are so simple, it's totally possible to fix them. Find someone who knows their way around circuit boards and chances are good they can resuscitate these little lads.
@@Here_is_Waldo I actually buy broken in order to have the fun of repair.
I have a box of gears and electrical test gear.
Oh No! sad to not hear it play a recording! this is the same with my chatbot! my Chatbot lights up and turns the eyes when playing and recording and there is a slight hiss of the speaker, but no sound! :(
A cautionary story to any Tomy robot collector.
So sad! 🥺 I have a Ding-bot and an Omni-bot, not bought second hand. The Ding-bot still works, but it’s rather simple. The Omni-bot needs a battery replacement, but I don’t know if I found one whether it would still work or not.
Cool! Those two are definitely on my list to find cheap… maybe one day. I have vague memories of once owning a Dingbot as a child, but I don't remember seeing it working. I think the original ones came with a map?
@@RobotElixir Yes, it has a map and a blueprint. Neither have ever helped him in any way. 😆
@@taraoakes6674 :D
@@RobotElixir My friend gave me a Dingbot and Chatbot :D :D - I love them to bits! (as in I'm actually going to have to take Dingbot apart as think it has a broken gear)
Cool little bot
Robot Elixir, can you please get the All Grown Up Singin Rock Star Kimi doll, even if it isnt a robot can we still get a video of it?
Just curious. Did you ever get it working?
Are You sure the problem is not the batteries?
I have a working one ould be wiling to sell no box tho
2:47 🥲Anyway... Still the best robot designs imho ... after so many years ... can't believe how lame the robot industry has been since the 1980s. I had Omnibot, when I was 9 or 10 years old.
