Hi! So I did have far more footage, but for some reason it deleted in my render of the video, which I did months ago. Since then I have deleted the footage! DISASTER! I paid £5 for this with £2.90 postage (£7.90) total. The robot span around in circles and did not fully function. Can I fix it?
It had a map it holds its a bump and go, it moves a bit, shakes it's head and makes a sound, (because he's lost trying to follow the map), then turns and goes in another direction, bottom of Tomys robot range.
AWWW...it worked so well for about 3 seconds. Nice work on a cool item...wish you could have fully fixed it but hoepfully you can still make your money back on it.
Massive nostalgia for DingBot! I had one when I was about 4 or 5 and I loved it to destruction. I actually genuinely gasped when I saw the thumbnail for the video as it took me right back to the doorstep of my childhood home wondering, even then, why it just went round in circles. Gotta hunt one down on eBay now!
I remember these! A common fix with split plastic gears is to gently 'weld' the two sides together with a soldering iron. Epoxy resin also holds up quite well as if mixed correctly it tends to set rock hard and not flex about like other glues.
That's what I was thinking as well, slide the gear off the shaft, weld with soldering iron, slide back on. Id probably go the extra mile and re-enforce the gear by making a cast around the shaft using epoxy as you suggested or clamping on a ferrule. The reason the super glue failed is because the gears in these old toys are made out of either POM or Nylon, which are very slippery plastics so next to nothing will stick to them. I found this out the hard way trying to repair a old Omega Supreme figure. lol
I can't believe your video popped up whilst I was looking for pictures of my childhood toy. I love that you're doing this. It warms my heart that you're repairing him. I adored this tiny Robot. I recently found mine and his head was separated from his body. I won't be able to fix him. You're super cool. ☮
@@BodziuM It's working, but because the tyres have perished, it's not running properly. I dunno if both the tyres on the driving wheels were replaced with silicon O-Rings or if it was just one, but what seems to be happening, is that one tyre is gripping the flor correctly, and the other is just spinning or locked in place, which would lead the Dingbot to just turn in a circle.
My mate had one of these when we were kids, i was actually a bit jealous too as it looked so cool. Brings me back to the days of boglins and stretch Armstrong lol
Unlucky Elliot, those plastic gears apparently shrink but the metal axle doesn't so the gears end up cracking. It happens to a lot of the old toys. I say £5 was well spent for your facial expression when he worked for 4 seconds before the dreaded sound of a failed slipping gear kicked in :-)
I remember seeing this in the Argos catalogue when I was a kid, I wanted it so badly but I got a shitty monopoly board game instead.. 😩 Awesome video as always!!
I still have one of these and a super mario talking alarm clock. They both still work perfectly but are in desperate need of a good clean. Love the videos and can’t wait to see what’s coming in next week’s challenge.
My brother and I both had one of these. I think because the rubber tyres have perished and were replaced with o-rings (at least one, anyway) that one when is properly gripping the floor and providing traction, while the other isn't. That could be because it's tyre is perished and isn't gripping the floor, or (if it's the o-ring tyre) because it doesn't quite fit the wheel and the wheel is spinning inside the tyre (no traction).
Wondering if that little cam that goes side to side against the big half toothed cog was never aligned to the middle correctly so it hit the end stop when it went one way before going back the other way and therefore putting stress on the tiny cogs you were gluing? I reckon originally some kid twisted the head and so made it jump the teeth and become unaligned.
little hint for next time - try the thing before opening it - for example the head could move only when one of those arms hit anything... it would spare you the guessing part a lot :) (p.s. i've got snow blindness from the vid... )
I did a repair on one of these about 2 months back- found it locally on facebook and wanted to give the little guy a home, very difficult to do without guidance, very nearly made it worse. I used a few guides and the map resource from www.theoldrobots.com/zding2.html and www.theoldrobots.com/dingbot.html to print the mini map that goes with it. was lucky enough to snag an original box with it too! little dude is fully functional and lives with me now XD
Not a mechanical toy, but you should look into repairing the analog of a N64 controller as it's an extremely common problem due to a design flaw with the joystick
Hi Elliott! Would you be interested in trying to fix faulty tamagotchi’s? I’ve never seen it done before 🥚 it would be so interesting and very helpful! Especially making spare parts
Hey elliot I was wondering if you'll ever do refurbs on xboxs specifically xbox 360s because my xbox 360s disc tray is jammed up and I cant find a good tutorial on how to fix it
Had this toy as a child he did have a little map and it said on the package you could store it in the compartment on his head. Also it drove around and turning it head left and right. Loved it back in the day.
This robot looks like R.O.B.s child or something. Hey Elliot, does your screwdriver set snap closed? I'm thinking of getting one but im worried about throwing it in my backpack and having it slide open. Thanks!
I haven't see this robot in years I had one when I was a kid he came with a mini map these cane out when robots we're popular at the time.now it just zombie crap now😑 now only jaan get all the robots now.

Lies we all know you blew the budget on your ding bot! 🤣😉
A tip for mechanical repairs. lithium grease is your best friend.
Elliott's face at the end when he switches it on.... .... ... Priceless! Lol
i litereally
spit out my tea and cracked up. His Face was gold :D
Reminds me of the AVGN.

👍Great video, I had that robot as a kid. Looks like WALL-E kinda.
Tampatec it’s definitely got a very similar resemblance!

I had one
He does move around bump into walls and turn around & shake its head
so it's working like that? but need to put some wall in front of his head?

@@iaincowell9747 i can imagine* some dad back in the day trolling his kid by making his ding bot go in circles

I really enjoy the series. You should continue it. Bring another element to your channel ❤❤
its miller time yeah it would be cool!
I had a Ding-Bot when I was a kid... This episode brought back memories. Thank you
Buy it for nostalgia purposes!
5:43 Add baking powder to the superglue. That creates a sort of hard putty on there, holding everything together.
Baking _soda_, sodium bicarbonate.
@@JLsoft I don't think it actually chemically reacts with it. As long as it's some fine powder it should work.

Repairing video are so satisfying, especially The Retro Future repairing videos
Around thirty years ago my own little ding-bot was one of the very first things i pulled apart and worked on 😁 they weren't much quieter when new tbh.
That expressions that went from awe to disgust was hilarious
It's so cute, I'd love to have one.
My mum bought me one of these Dingbots from Argos for Christmas 1988, it was a great toy and forever running into walls and furniture LOL
I remember seeing this in the Argos catalogue when I was a kid, I wanted it so badly but I got a shitty monopoly board game instead.. 😩
Awesome video as always!!
It worked at the start lol but then it went mad .
That was my favourite childhood toy and still got it now.
I still have one of these and a super mario talking alarm clock. They both still work perfectly but are in desperate need of a good clean. Love the videos and can’t wait to see what’s coming in next week’s challenge.
I used to own one of these, and a few of the others. I even had the fully programmable one. Super nostalgic.

That old printer sound made him go " wtf?" ...hahaha great video, Eliot!
When I found out you would be doing the eBay challenge, I got so juiced! This has been great so far!
Ahh thanks buddy!
12:31 that face tho 😂💀
You can buy bags of random sized nylon cogs very cheaply, handy for these fixes 👍
i remeber the blue one we had in our playgroup when i was a kid
The challenge is a really cool series, hope you'll do more in the future :)
I had one of these back in the day.
Aww it was working well for a bit, it looks really cute tho!
Are you saving the ebay sales results for the last video? Did it just have to sell within the 5 weeks to count?

Hey, look. It's R.O.B. the robots little brother!
i had one of those when i was a kid lol forgot all about it so it was good to see an old toy anyways! im 39 now :(
Been watching this channel when it only had 16K, and I have to say it has come a long way. Keep up the good work!
I feel your pain Elliott. Good luck 👍
makes me wonder if a grub screw would hold that little cog in place.
I got a preview for Star Trek Picard in the middle of the video. Almost forgot what I was watching when it ended.
Hi Elliot, nice vid! Looking forward to week 3😊
Brandon Le Rossignol thanks!

That face and then the laugh 😂😂 I love it ❤️
You could use the super glue in conjunction with baking soda. It would make a much stronger fix.
5:49....."hopefully should fill in to that groove" = capillary flow. X
If it’s just spinning in a circle then the guide wheel is probably jammed. Loved mine as a kid
Awesome video as always 👍🏻❤️
I had one of these as a kid also the hoot bot and the dog...
Its like Rob and Wall-E had a baby
