I’d like to get into Classics but the price of admission is steep after this many years. That being said with your commentary on why the lines change goes back to most managerial positions…someone new comes in and has to raise their leg on the product to make their mark.
I wouldn't mind classic lines, but the price is so prohibitive and costly that you may as well just go with vintage if it doesn't bother you. It's toys versus collectibles. I'd rather have way more toys in the aisle then shelf after shelf of collectibles.
Everybody is forgetting the not so secret sauce Classics had - the Four Horsemen. They're the ones that did all the design work. Without them, there's no point in relaunching Classics, and they're busy with their own awesome lines.

Masterverse wasnt New Eternia then Vintage Collection. It’s both as well as all the other sublines and all part of Masterverse. New Eternia is concept art based designs. Vintage is original toy line based design. The rest are obvious. Brian Flynn at Super7 has said in interviews he’d continue Classics and Reaction if he ever gets the license back. It makes more sense financially to do Classics given they would start over with more modern everything. You havent seen many modern lines if you think it cant be done at retail Action Force and GI Joe Classified destroy Classics. Mcfarlane’s DC and Spawn lines feature an insane amount of deco and are $25. There’s more paint on a Spawn figure than any 2-3 Classics figures. Classics are old and are looking dated. Im glad I never got back into them given most of the newer Masterverse figures look so much nicer. They’d have to start over Classics given new figures look so much better. Put that He-ro figure away. Cherrypicking isnt allowed. Heck, NECA paint deco is even more insane and probably the best deco in retail toys. Those arent $70. An average figure is $35 for a 7” figure. They have cheaper figures with tons of paint, too. Not every factory charges per brush stroke on deco. It all depends on what it is.
Classics set the bar high. Masterverse (or whatever they call it now) just falls on its face compared to it. I’m not crazy about Super7 prices but I wish they would give them another crack at the classics line again. They’ve done great work with the buck the classics is built upon. The Thundercats and Conan figures look good IMHO.
The question to me is: if a line needs to remake A-List characters as many times as possible, what will come after Filmation Origins? Or are they going to continue releasing new MOTU lines while letting the older ones fade away?
Masterverse is mostly a line where I pick up new characters, characters that are backups for any flawed Classics or strictly my favorites. I'd much rather Mattel go, "Ok Super7, you can continue making MOTUC at the Deluxe price point. Here's the list of characters we don't plan on doing in Masterverse."
In my opinion Masterverse is just a continuation of what Classics would have become if allowed to continue. Hasbro Marvel Legends is a perfect example of this. That line has continued on even tho it's burnt out its main character roster multiple times. How many jokes do we hear about another Wolverine or Iron Man when a new wave is announced? How do they get away with it tho? Well they get away with it by updating the articulation over and over. Every time Marvel Legends updates that articulation, it's like wiping the slate clean for character selection. First it was Double Knees and Elbows and lately it's pinless. Now every figure has to be rereleased with pinless joints. Hasbro is pretty smart in that regard as instead of ending a line and having to come up with new branding and marketing for a relaunch, you just update the articulation. Mattel just ends a line and reintroduces pretty much the same figures in a new package with slight tweaks.
That's why Hasbro is known as the company who invented the "action" figure! Some of the new Marvel Legends innovations in articulation & technology pushes the limits of the standard action figure as we know it & far surpasses that of all other toy companies, for the big box retail market.
I’ve picked up a few Masterverse figures, but I always end up selling or donating them. Two Bad is a great figure, but beyond that I just don’t care for the sculpts. Huge kneecaps, enormous pectoral muscles…no thanks. Classics was the pinnacle of MOTU for me. I have a bunch of Origins figures and I’m about to get rid of those too because the packaging is so inconsistent. Figures that came on single cards in the vintage line were given big stupid deluxe packaging, and figures like Moss Man and Sy-Klone coming in window boxes? How am I supposed to display a carded collection with all those unnecessary variations?
Let me say this, the Classicsjoints wereway worse than Masterverse, that one in the chest.. man, call me ugly! I see the new line as a great improvement in that aspect, and while I understand the painting in Classics is great quality, I am one that like my toys looking like toys. No bad thing as "plastic look" for toy figures. Because I started getting Classics a bit later, I have no nostalgia por it, so I do not want the Classics Zodac released again, I am 100% fine with the new one, and I enjoy the New Eternia changes and extras quite a lot. Still, I do hope they re-release Classics someday, so people who have nostalgia about it, also get their own poison :)
@@jpsarrihow can you compare the 2 lines? One was made for collectors and the other is made for retail. Although masterverse is better in articulation, and price. Classics cannot be posed and are delicate.
@@masonj4779 why not? You are already doing the comparison. In any case, articulation only matters to those who see these as playful toys. I am a collector first and foremost. I don’t play with toys. I collect action figures. In the end, Masterverse is utter trash. It fails as a toy (Origins is better) and it fails as a collectible (Classics is superior). Unfortunately, many of you rather live in denial.
@@jpsarrifine I compared them. But just like your comment and your “I don’t play with toys” it’s garbage. But if this argument helps you fulfill something missing in your life then sure classics are the best and masterverse is awful, so enjoy seeing masterverse on shelves and classics nowhere. 😂😂😂😂😂
@@masonj4779 How long have you been collecting? Have you ever seen Classics and Masterverse side by side? Well, I have. Masterverse doesn’t hold a candle to its older brother. This is where the difference lays. Regardless of how these are sold (brink & mortal or online retail), these are produced for mature collectors. Children are not the primary target. Mattel is actually catering to two different groups in the MOTU collectible toys market. Those who prefer the nostalgic appeal of the classic toys with Origins and those who prefer a modern take with Masterverse. The difference between those two lines is that Origins improves on the original on every single aspect. Masterverse on the other hand does not. You may argue that Masterverse has “better articulation” but that’s just the result of a 15 years or so in engineering and manufacturing development. However, that does not mean that Classics articulation is bad. It is quite the contrary. The only people who believe that nonsense are those who have never seen a Classics in person or go by what someone said in some random RUclips channel. Masterverse is trash. Plain and simple. The sooner you accept it, the better off you will be. 😏
Classics was just too good to beat. Origins comes close, especially at a more accessible price and easier to aqquire figures, but Masterverse feels like it's trying to be the new Classics, blending everything together, but just is missing that Classics touch. I do have hope we'll see Classics rerelease eventually
How do I build confidence in Masterverse? I have a handful of MOTU figures from different lines but want a cohesive collection to make a shelf. I wasn't really into Masterverse Revelation, but I just started buying New Eternia and now Masterverse Vintage has started up. I don't want to buy any more New Eternia figures if its already being deprecated and replaced. How should I evaluate a new product line as a collector? Are there signs that a line is just keeping the A-list at retail or that its going to have a long life and wide product line?
@@nicholasdickens2801 super7 is clinging to the old articulation scheme with single joints and pins, their stuff looks outdated compared to everything else

@@spectorcreative1872 ah really, that makes sense. I thought there might be some kind of thing to work out. Name look or whatever but I think it could be neat.
Question: At what point do you think Mattel would just reissue Classics as is? What would be some factors that a toy company would say, "There's a market for reiussuing these figures."? I've seen this with other lines (where a line that has existing mokds) have been used to give a company time to do something else. I also think of vintage lines where enough time has passed where collectors look for "vintage" figures, and a company decides to get some of that matket. I'm not necessary suggesting waiting until Classics is actually considered "vintage" (20/30 years?), but thinking about enough time that's passed where it would be at least viable and doesn't really hit the same roadblocks you discussed in this video.
Topic question (if you have not already) Hasbro has a Women Inventor Day of Play coming up October 10th. Are there any female inventors you can talk about? Any stand out products that have impressed you? And if it’s not too much heat, how do the retail buyers respond?

I stopped pretty much with classics.. Just seems like kind of a repeat. I did start with the origins just because it was cheap in the beginning..and that died diwn. I do like the special fortieth edition he man
Continuing Classics would be great if buying the classics that already got made wasn't hundreds of dollars per figure. Origins is where it's at anyway! You cant downplay The nostalgia factor
Scott I hope you address the issue of spawn. Why? Because there's a third party ' spawn ' action statue coming from china, that's not using the 'spawn ' identity IP as its monacher. That means a unlicensed company is getting more $ from retail of Mattel and Todd. And windows 10 being a issue as well because certain games like Warhammer space marines 2 you need to have windows 10 to run steam and the game. I'm wondering how Mattel identifies itself against third party companies as well as the national and and multinational hold on ip' s such as spawn and Warhammer through trade with mexico and China.😂❤
Its simple they dont wanna do classics coz it will end up in your favor, and what the hell the new brand manager will end up? Only in your shadow. Yes the classics is a premium type of line compare to the other line of motu done and now next to that is starting is origins, masterverse, new eternia and now what vintage will only all end crap, they are a hit or miss line,. They cant even make a proper he man head sculpt for christ sake! And they are in the game for 3 yrs now.,thats why i do not buy them its just a waste of money, but for origins now thats cool they are releasing some unreleased characters they done filmation to collab with other lines such as tmnt and now thubdercats i like them all, if classics is not just that expensive id like to jump on them again, but for bow origins will do
The reason they reboot the line ip every so often is money and profit period! And as for classics the line just burned itself out producing so many characters for so long and then super7 buying the molds and upping the price to re-issue alot and not finish the character selection it was done before the transfer!
While I definitely have had my opinions on how and why you did things as brand manager I also feel mattel probably realized that they had someone so much a fan of he man and so willing to work on it they could take advantage of you.which is why you probably never got a promotion or pay raise.if what you have said is true you gave them a line which made some money for them without being compensated like others would be.or maybe you thought it would lead to recognition and advancement but never did.
I honestly think Classics is looking more and more dated. But their buck meaning the basic body sculpt is still 100% superior to Masterverse's abomination. But when you are getting sculpture and articulation like what Brutal Realm is doing you realize how incredibly dated Classics is. If Mattel would come up with a buck like Brutal Realm and start re-issuing their MOTU characters in that pinless buck with that articulation Classics only worth will be its historic value.
I think classics today would suffer against other brands. I love the designs and all that, but those limited articulations are pretty outdated. And it's part of what sinked the later appeal of Super 7. That said, I really don't think the articulation on the masterverse is so good either. They need to figure out better posability in the same price range. And find a good face sculptor for heman, please.
Not ALL of us own Classics. I wasn't online when Classics was offered. I want Sorceress, both the Classics and the Super 7 versions. If Mattel wants my money, that's what they need to do: make these figures available again.
I didn't buy MOTU Origins Demo-Man because of the disrespect to Scott and the Four Horsemen with their "Demo-Man has been made as a figure before, but not by Mattel - until now. Our version pays tribute to comics and concept art for the character" blip on the Mattel Creations page. What kinda nonsense was that???
The master verse line basically is just classics, but with better figures, broken into sub groups so it can encompass everything. Also it doesn’t do anything to change the lore, which is by far the worst part of classics. This feels more like a jaded opinion, as opposed to a real topic that has any kind of buzz.
Masterverse isn’t anywhere near the same class. Yes they have better articulation but that’s like 16-17 years of engineering improvements. Paint decos, accessories, packaging are all inferior.
@@joemartin5669 You´re right. Sorry. Don´t know why but when I first did a search on the character bever showed in Classics. Still... why is he nobody´s favorite?
It probably has to do with when he was first released .in 1987 the end of the line.he hadn't been there when he man was at his peak .there was no cartoon to endear him to the fans and he only appeared in some of the final mini comics.I think his axe is one of the better weapons they made .
I’d prefer they keep going on making new characters in New Eternia and Revelation/Revolution. Unfortunately those don’t sell because for some reason MOTU fans want the same iterations and original designs over and over and over.

Masterverse is a cheap line
That's why Hasbro is known as the company who invented the "action" figure! Some of the new Marvel Legends innovations in articulation & technology pushes the limits of the standard action figure as we know it & far surpasses that of all other toy companies, for the big box retail market.
Meanwhile...I'm looking at GI Joe figures and seeing all the deco they do for that price point...
Masterverse is not an improvement. It is quite the opposite. Nostalgia may be poison but so it is denial.
So is this vintage collection gonna be a line with the classic looks?
Hey Scott, thx for all the insights you share with us ! Could you give us your opinion about the future Mondo 200x motu figures?
How do I build confidence in Masterverse? I have a handful of MOTU figures from different lines but want a cohesive collection to make a shelf. I wasn't really into Masterverse Revelation, but I just started buying New Eternia and now Masterverse Vintage has started up. I don't want to buy any more New Eternia figures if its already being deprecated and replaced.
How should I evaluate a new product line as a collector? Are there signs that a line is just keeping the A-list at retail or that its going to have a long life and wide product line?
I hope Vintage Collection and New Eternia can co exist. Something for everyone
Success has many parents.failure is an orphan
I just wish Masterverse was more buff-looking. He-Man toys ought to look like they're bigger and badder than anybody else.
isn’t Mondo’s upcoming 6 inch line kind of a 200X continuation of Classics? at least scale-wise
Oh yeah. They'll only be about 100 bucks. lol
@@Thorrson7 eh probably 50-60 which is standard for premium figures now
I believe so. Makes you wonder why they didn’t let Super7 do it?
@@nicholasdickens2801 super7 is clinging to the old articulation scheme with single joints and pins, their stuff looks outdated compared to everything else
@@CYeoung You know the funny thing - that’s a better system for articulation. All the pinless joints look great but are not as strong.
I feel like if Neca could do Motu they would make classics quality figures for a good price in stores Necas figures have high deco and tons of accessories
If Mattel showed up on your door saying so we want mighty Spector in masterverse what would you say?
They don’t need to ask me. The own him.
@@spectorcreative1872and I’m glad they’ve thrown that garbage character away.
@@spectorcreative1872 ah really, that makes sense. I thought there might be some kind of thing to work out. Name look or whatever but I think it could be neat.
@@paltraxonly you and a handful of others wish that. I guarantee that figure would kill the masterverse line.
Scott, will you speculate on why Mattel won't grant Super7 the license to make figures again
Surely it's because Mattel are making figurers themselves now?
@@JurassicRod I don't think that is it because Mattel granted a license to Mondo for a 7 inch scale line.
I would love to continue the classics I need more New Adventure characters
Topic question (if you have not already)
Hasbro has a Women Inventor Day of Play coming up October 10th. Are there any female inventors you can talk about? Any stand out products that have impressed you? And if it’s not too much heat, how do the retail buyers respond?
Classics is, was, and always will be *thee* definitive MOTU line.
And,... hey, wait, hold up...

Who created the Classics buck? And how and why does Super7 still use that same or similar looking buck in alot of their figures to this day
I’m curious about that also. For a 25 year old buck, it’s holding up well.
The 4 horsemen created that buck. It’s on the interview in the 200x dvd series.
@@HPTBANDIT25 years? Classics started in 2008-9
@@raziel4435 for some reason I had 1998 in my head. Oh well.
I stopped pretty much with classics.. Just seems like kind of a repeat. I did start with the origins just because it was cheap in the beginning..and that died diwn. I do like the special fortieth edition he man
You see this so often in the work place. You just have to file it under SUAGABI.
Shut Up and Grin and Bear It.
Well if anybody can offer insight on ego Scott would be your man.
And they are in the game for 3 yrs now.,thats why i do not buy them its just a waste of money, but for origins now thats cool they are releasing some unreleased characters they done filmation to collab with other lines such as tmnt and now thubdercats i like them all, if classics is not just that expensive id like to jump on them again, but for bow origins will do
You said the biggest cost was making the cast mold...they have already been made. So that doesn't add up
The reason they reboot the line ip every so often is money and profit period!
They just need to give it back to Super 7 and we can get a Fright Zone.
Not ALL of us own Classics. I wasn't online when Classics was offered. I want Sorceress, both the Classics and the Super 7 versions. If Mattel wants my money, that's what they need to do: make these figures available again.
Thats what she said. 😆
1/2" is a big difference.
Since you love comparing…….compre classics snout spout and masterverse snout spout. Or cyclone. Yeah that’s exactly what I thought
The new snout spout is one of the best of the masterverse line.
Exactly, or Trapjaw, or Mekanek or Two Bad or Clawful or the new battle armour Skeletor and Merman the list goes on.
The master verse line basically is just classics, but with better figures, broken into sub groups so it can encompass everything. Also it doesn’t do anything to change the lore, which is by far the worst part of classics. This feels more like a jaded opinion, as opposed to a real topic that has any kind of buzz.
Masterverse is trash. Plain and simple. Some of you prefer not to accept it due to personal bias.

It probably has to do with when he was first released .in 1987 the end of the line.he hadn't been there when he man was at his peak .there was no cartoon to endear him to the fans and he only appeared in some of the final mini comics.I think his axe is one of the better weapons they made .
Isn’t this entire video rooted in your own ego?
I’d prefer they keep going on making new characters in New Eternia and Revelation/Revolution. Unfortunately those don’t sell because for some reason MOTU fans want the same iterations and original designs over and over and over.
New Eternia has received pretty popular and good reception. Masterverse is just understandably compared to the peak Classics
