OMG!!! I've been trying for so long to figure out how my favorite musician, The Tallest Man on Earth, plays the banjo. I just can't make sense of it when I watch him. I've made forum posts asking for explanations, and the best reply I've gotten is "he's just playing a form of clawhammer." I just found out that he plays with a ton of Drop Thumbing, and usually in Double C Tuning. Then I found this video. Thank you so much!
Great drop thumb lesson! You're right about slowing the process down. It's a bit of an awkward process at first. Keep the lessons coming when time allows. I look forward to them.
Nice an experienced banjo player, banjo writer etc putting this in my file for continued practuice. Do love Lo Gordons banjos had a friend over with one the other night and almost wanted to take her banjo
Very nice. I've been playing open G clawhammer - and writing/recording a few tunes with it. This is a great next step and a wonderful tutorial. I subscribed to your channel. Much appreciated.
This is a great video. I am pretty new and have gotten to the point where I am looking to expand to newer things. This was perfect. I love your approach brother. Subscribed!
Most difficult thing is especially if you are a guitar player or finger picking banjoist, not to pick the thumbed string but to thumb it, to catch the thumb string by either brushing forward or strike forward with your lead finger and realsing the thumb string by moving upward.
Thanks for a real easy to understand lesson for double C.I have looked at other vidiios with 2nd,3rd and 4th drop thumb double C.Do you know these and are there lessons? Thanks Dakota.
Just tried tuning my new Gold Tone banjo to C but the B string keeps going flat as soon as I tune it up to C. Any ideas as to why this happens gratefully received! 😊
I won the Topanga Canyon banjo and fiddle contest in 1965, beginner category, playing old Molly Hare but I tuned my banjo to C, not C modal. Of course, you do risk string breakage tuning to a full C.
I’m not sure what you mean. The tuning is already gCGCD so the first string is already a D. But I’m interested to figure out what you’re talking about. Always looking for new tubings to mess around with
@@DakotaWaddellMusic What he means is that some players (incl me) tune down to open C on the 1st string in dropped C, which means you're playing three open C strings. I really prefer this sound, used in tunes like Darlin' Cory which needs that driving drone sound cutting through. So it's GCGCC.

OK. We used to call your "Double C" tuning, C modal. Is there a difference?

Why do some guys tune the 1st string to open D?
