Thanks for sharing that routine with us. A great one for an opener. I had forgotten about it. As for the “Okay” repetition. First, ignore those who are simply making fun of you. They evidently have nothing beneficial or worthwhile to say and are probably perfect in all their public speaking and performances. Listen to those who have something credible and beneficial to say. I am sure it is more nerves than anything or thinking you didn’t have enough time to get the performance in along with the how to portion on video. But, from someone who used “You know” a lot and did the “smacking” sound many times between sentences, plus, flew through a speech or performance, here are some tips. 1. Slow down a bit both in speaking and performance. Take a few deep breathes before any performance. It’s not a race. Plus, slowing down causes your audience to relax and allows them to enjoy and take in the magic more. It also helps you to relax. Of course, you don’t want to slow down too much. There’s a fine balance which you can figure out either watching your recordings and or with a friend or mentor to help. 2. Pause or take a breath after each sentence for a second or two. This will help you slow down also. 3. The best thing is to listen to your recordings and think, How can I do that better? How can I improve my speech? What can I replace the word “Okay” with...a pause, “As you can see...”, “wouldn’t you agree?”, and so-forth? Finding words and phrases to replace “Okay” with at the beginning or end of a sentence will help. But, listen to each recording and then go to work on both your speaking and the performance. 4. Have a trusted friend or find a more experienced magic performer to work with you. Better yet, if your school has a speech or acting class, take those or seek out the teacher of those classes and see if they will help you. Those four tips will help you improve your performance and speaking. You have the potential to be a really good performer. But, it will take some training and doing the work! Good luck in helping others experience the magic in their lives!
