    Sharda Peeth is actually ruins of an ancient University of Buddhists era & a non-functional Hindu temple located in AJK. It stands on bank of Neeulm River around 10 Kms from Kupwara.
    Buddhist University was established during period of Emperor Ashoka (273 BC), an Indian emperor of Maurya Dynasty who ruled most of sub-continent as a famous Buddhist leader. Due to influence of
    university, Buddhism extended to Laddakh, Himachal, Tibet & Nepal
    The Site contains ruined ancient settlements of Buddhist & Hindues which includes a Fort, Buddhist University & Temple structure of Goddess Sharda Sharda Peeth in present shape was constructed ion 724 AD during time of Emperor Lalit Aditya. It is believed that Emperor Lalit Aditya has built Sharda Peeth to contain the religious and political influence of Buddhism
    Hindus equate Sharda Peeth to their three famous holy sites of Kashmir after Amarnath Temple & Martand Sun Temple J&K Gazette of 1873 mentions Sharda as a non-worshipping ruin thus challenges Hindues' claim of Sharda peeth being a revered functioning temple
    Sharda Peeth is believer to be built at a lace where body parts Devi Sath had fallen while being carried by her husband Lord Shiva. Therefore, Sharda is considered as a place of reverence for Hindus, particularly the Kashmiri Pundits
    Buddhist University at Sharda was considered as one of the most revered universities in Indian subcontinent & a Buddhist cultural center which remained centre of learning till 13th centre. Between 6th G12th century, centre hosted scholars like Khalna, Adi Shankara, Vairotsana, Kumarajiva & Thonmi Sambhota. Chinese Buddhist monk, Xuanzang & Muslim historian Al-Biruni also visited site.
