I've never thought about this pen and with this review i am seriously considering having a look at it and may be buy it. Thanks for bringing it to us. You were doing an amazing job with inks now you are doing a great job with pens too. Really appreciate it.
Thank you for a great review! Sailor's pens are generally excellent and, evidently, the Realo is no exception. So thanks for making me lust after these beautiful pens...I think. Great review, as usual!
Thanks for this great look at the Realo. You’re right that it is over looked. I have many Sailor pens and not really sure I never considered it. Now I will. Take care and be well.
Your comments were spot on in my book. The nib is very good indeed. I have a Sailor Pro Gear Imperial Black. The nibs are ostensibly the same and both are good writers. However the nib I got with this pen was very much better tuned. The nib has a gentle give in it which makes writing with it a lovely soft experience. I polished some of the feedback out on the nib. It just needed a few seconds with 0.3 micromesh. My Sailor Medium nibs are much the same thickness as my Pelikan mediums, slightly finer than a Pilot Custom medium and slightly broader than my Diplomat medium nibs. But it is always a lottery as manufacturers have a width tolerance window for each size. I definitely need to post the Imperial and my hands are a little smaller than yours. Posted it has a better balance for me. I like that the grip unscrews from the barrel for cleaning too. They are a tremendous writer. I really like your angle about enjoying your pens. 👍 A great review and a pleasure to watch. Thanks 👍😊
@@AnInkGuy Yes, I like a little feedback, but the Imperial Black nibs were actually scraping paper fluff off the paper. Both pens were bought separately. (I thought I had lost the first one so after some months I bought a replacement). It was so bad I wondered at first if the pens were genuine. The Realo is still superior to them for nib experience. Anyway this is a really good review. Thank you.👍
I really feel that you are starting to hit your stride. I’ve been watching your reviews for a few years. However in recent months it seems that your ongoing review adjustments are paying dividends. Clearly a lot of time/effort goes into your work. Your review of the Realo is among the best I’ve seen of this underated pen. I’ve been on the fence about it for a year plus. Your review hit on some of my key concerns (and yours apparently). You did a great job of putting them in context. Many thanks!
I appreciate that! I do try to improve... but I know what I work on doesn't always get to come through in the videos... but the effort to improve the quality is there.
Appreciate this review as it helps me with my ambivalence. There's a lot about this pen I like but I made the semi-mistake of getting a fine nib. I usually use EF and F (even with Japanese pens). It's smooth enough but it writes rather on the dry side. In hindsight, I wish I'd gotten a broader nib. At the very least, I'm going to use a wetter ink the next time I put it in rotation.
@@AnInkGuy You inspired me to take mine out of the case and see what I could do. I pulled the nib, flossed it up (brass shim), reinstalled it and gave it a drink of Waterman Intense Black. Now it writes like a dream (well, pencil-like feedback I've had with Sailors. I'm good with that). Thanks!
This was the pen I was about to buy, but I bought a Custom 823 Amber instead. Gotta tell you, the 823 will be the last pen I buy for more than a while. It is simply phenomenal
Is 1.2 ml of ink .. the same as the amount a cartridge holds or is it much less I just purchased the Realo and haven’t used it yet still in box kinda nervous kinda excited never had a piston Fountain Pen before the Realo will be my 2nd Fountain pen I’m very still very much a Novice when it comes to Fountain Pens
Ink Guy, you think it'll be expensive or time consuming if the piston mechanism ever breaks? I had a TWSBI that only lasted 4 months and was turned off by one ever since. But this is Sailor and their Pro Gear Slim is just quality. Think a Realo will hold up for awhile? I take notes at work daily, as well as journaling about 2-4 times a week.
@@AnInkGuy I had a feeling. I ordered the Realo and hope it lasts for awhile. Nothing lasts forever, so I might as well write a little. Or a lot, you know! haha
Dude - your observations are spot on. The singular gripe I have with this pen (aside from cost) is the length, and that I can't use it for extended periods without posting it. That doesn't stop me, it's a regular writer in regular rotation. Please keep up the outstanding work, enjoy everyone of your vids.
@@taiko7225 I also would love it if the pen was just a but longer so it COULD be used without the need or desire to post it. This is one of the few pens I actually post to write with because of that.

Glad I could help! or is it hurt when looking at pens, lol.
Great content. Thanks for the work. It looks enjoyable.
Glad you enjoy it!

My pleasure! Save money and try to find it on the aftermarket... though I rarely see them for sale.

Glad it was helpful! I would say the cost is why it is so overlooked though.
I just got a Sailor Realo, and although it is expensive, OMG it is my absolute FAVORITE pen ever!
Without a doubt worth every penny! Glad you love yours.

I don't think it is unusual for a little nib tuning to individual preferences. Though I love the feedback from a Sailor nib.

Something which many people don't know about the Realo is that it has a Slip&Seal mechanism which the regular Pro Gear and 1911L don't have.
Very true, but for legal reasons they don't call it slip and seal... but the inner cap liner does a great job on the Realo.

Nice review! I've been wondering how it stacks up to the 823, since both pens are approximately at the same price point. Cheers!
No problem 👍

From what I have found, generally a standard international short hold about 0.7ml of ink.

I figure it would be kind of expensive if I broke the piston mechanism, though I would try to go through Sailor for repair if that happened.
