I have been doing drywall finishing for years that yellowing is very common on old sheetrock . The sheet rock paper turns brown and when you apply paint or mud the yellow bleeds through, the best remedy is to use oil based primer or Shellac primer the yellow can bleed through latex primer over time. I have seen it worse in a smokers house and rooms that have a wood burning fireplace.
@@austinleblanc8735 It almost always turns brown with age, when your skimming if the sheetrock still feels sturdy, and you can tell when your applying you skim coat. Hey Paul. My dad and I were one of the ones spraying that stuff in the 70s, and in my area it’s pretty prevalent and I removed around 500 popcorn ceilings and re textured them and have never seen that happen unless it was due to a smoker in the room like others are saying. Watched you repair a ceiling hole. That was awesome and fairly easy. I inherited 2 small rental older houses , one is brick and one is wood, a rental mobile and an acre and a half of property. My prior experience was light yard work, and just small repairs, painting, etc. After getting divorced and moving back to the town where these rentals are I have been faced with just about any repair, replace, remodel, yard work you could think of. I learned right off that having quality tools and the correct tools are critical. Armed with You Tube and repair books for every thing I have been slowly getting things done and learning along the way. It seems any job I do there is always some kind of hang up. OMG !! Just found your channel so I'll be spending a lot more time here and on the electrical guys channel. Getting a visual of the process really helps. Yup I think you're 100 percent correct. I did two skim coats on the ceiling I mentioned previously and the ceiling looks exactly like this one in your video. 😉🤦♀
I just had this happen yesterday with a new paint job on a textured ceiling. The flat spots slightly yellowed and the texture areas remained white. There was no yellowing prior to the painting. Thank you! Same issue. Stains started to appear after about 3 weeks. It was done professionally so hoping that the painter will be back to fix with a primer!
I just discovered this same issue on one ceiling in my new house. I've been skim coating walls and ceilings all over and only this ceiling turned yellow. Luckily I only did one small patch spot before I discovered it, so I thought I'd use Kilz before continuing. Hope that works 🤞🤞
Thanks for posting - I think I'm having the same issue in our ~100yr home. I think the yellow may also come from bituminous sealants. I found this gross stuff while pulling some electrical earlier, and it totally gunked up my spade bit. It was all over the header plate/joist, and I think seeped into the ceiling near the edge by the walls.
Possibly nicotine? From the older previous residents who smoked. My dad smoked like a chimney for years and after we painted our old house with white paint it turned yellow. The nicotine soaked through the drywall over the years. Just my experience.

Really enjoyed your videos. I need to first scrape and then lightly sand my unpainted popcorn ceiling in my 1966 house. I planned to let drywall professionals take it from there, but you seem to encourage a slightly ambitious DIY person to give it a try. I'm still a bit chicken so I'll first check how much it would cost. If it's crazy expensive (90% chance it will be as I live in the SF Bay Area... in the hills no less!) then I'll do one of the smaller bedrooms first.

I did the paint roller and 14 inch taping knife and I got some cracking (too thick), and some weird skittering (knife too light maybe?). Not sure what caused it, but it was annoying. Also, if you remove popcorn, police the perimeter of the room to make sure you got ALL the popcorn, lest it drag through your mud and leave trenches.
Just removed asbestos pop corn on my dinning room ceiling . Three days later we moved a light fixture to the center of the ceiling and when I went to patch up the cuts we made. The seams of the new drywall turned yellow. I think your theory may be right. But wanted to know id you have found more info. I got worried at first. Its been two days and seams at joints are still yellow.
I am DYI so what I did was use a small amount of water on a heavy texture ceiling. I testing in 3 area for Asbestos before scraping. I masked up in respirator I left paint under compound alone, some came off with compound but the wetting was what helped keep it from. This yellowing is showing up through as I all skim coating it. I used a little hot mud 20min in on small crack I got prior to it did not show up there. I can run out skim again with 45min. Yet I really just want to roll and put a simple text up. Simple 😊 so what did you end up doing to get stain from nothing coming through. Should I texture, then prime and paint.
Just done a whole house 7 ceilings where I scraped off all the popcorn then replastered… I’m from the U.K. where we us British gypsum plaster …. 2 weeks later all yellowing to a certain degree. Possible either water damage (not likely, water is generally more brown. I’m a restoration worker, water/fire/sewage) but looks chem based, water in the mud brings out the color. Killz or a good primer (probably not water based, since water might be an issue) Id grab killz since you can’t positively identify what the issue is, and killz the spots.
was the previous owners smokers? Ive seen this happen when anything wet comes into contact with paint that was either cleaned or painted over from smoke staining. The color of the cigarette smoke bleeds through.
Willing to bet it was a smokers house.. killz works fantastic as a stain hiding primer. My house was a smokers... Had to do the entire house with it. The oil based stuff is a nightmare for smell as expected but the water based is no different in smell than any latex. I'm no expert by any means, but that's just my experience with stains.

I don’t like my texture ceiling any longer. I do want someone to skim coat and then paint the ceiling. I reside in Md . Do you know someone like you that does that work?
your theory is correct, old drywall turns yellow if left uncoated because gypsum absorbs moisture like crazy and hold it - basically it turns into a huge water stain but not from an active leak in a roof but simply from the moisture in the air. If it was an old popcorn ceiling it would have turned yellow by sucking the moisture out of the popcorn - whoever did the popcorn prolly didnt prime well before texture (one of the many problems that not priming before texture can cause) so then the water in your new texture or if you primed first the water in the primer sucked that stain right through to your finish. Now you have to treat it like its a giant water stain. - fyi 27 years of being a rep at sw, and ppg. I have seen 59 million drywall problems give or take 2 million.
