It was an ongoing problem that someone yawned loudly in that class. Yeah, he could’ve approached the situation better but he was disrespected every time he heard that when he was teaching, so I get why it happened.

Nobody pushed him to any point. He needs to calm down. How is a teacher like that supposed to earn respect when he's yelling at a student who only yawned? The outburst was so uncalled for and he needs to have better control over his anger issues. A yawn should not be the reason for you to yell at a student to 'get the hell out'. It wasn’t just a yawn, it was a loud and exaggerated yawn. It’s basically the equivalent of saying “Boring!” in the middle of a lecture. The professor may have overreacted, but the yawning student isn’t any better than he is.

A few days ago, some kid faked a yawn in my chem class and our professor was a bit pissed off by it, but like a professional instructor just called him out, warned him, and went on with the lecture, none of this “my bad side is as bad as my pleasant side” bs. Mind you, I’m at a community college.

During my high school years, we had a teacher like this. She always got super annoyed when someone yawned. Needless to say, i was always feeling on the edge during her lectures
yeah, sleeping in class almost happened to me. I even had a sort of dream where the teacher was talking about some weird things. Then the teacher woke me up and told me its normal and happens to him also sometimes. Looks like they understand sleep deprivation and the fact that since I'm a foreigner studying in Germany, the teacher talks in German all the time, and this can cause me to lose my attention. Still, I'm glad that teachers here are more understanding. If I slept in this college room, I would likely become dead meat.

This actually was one of the first real videos I saw of a college professor, and things like this genuinely scared me for college. Got through my first semester and my professor were the people I would genuinely converse with and treated you with respect instead of blowing up on everyone as soon as something mildly inconvenienced them, wow 💀

I’d understand if this was high school but with the amount of money that this professor gets paid, I’d say he should be able to put up with it. As I’ve said, it is incredibly common to be nervous in your first classes when everything is hyped up to be this insurmountable amount of work with prevalent themes of isolation and hopelessness. That being said this would be a perfect example of how anxiety works as a concept, as I wholeheartedly believe that this is completely normal. I’d like to acknowledge that, of course, the dude who yawned is weird asl for doing that. But reacting like that and throwing a tantrum during a lecture and trying to size himself up showed a real level of insecurity in the professor that is kind of an irredeemable quality for someone who has to be such a powerful public speaker to standout from the general population.
This video always reminds me of the experience I had when I was 18 and fresh out of High School. I went to a university that had a good criminal justice class. And in my first semester I was in the class of this professor who taught criminal law. But the guy was "too advanced" - it just seemed like he was used to dealing with students much farther along in their academic careers- and ONLY that type of student.
The class that I had with him was a mix bag, but mostly recently graduated HS students. There was an FBI agent in our class who went back to school. And a couple of experienced adults.
This guy would give us really arbitrary assignment or ask really vague questions. But one day he snapped. He showed us this video of a news article. Some crime happened- it wasn't like a murder or violent crime or anything. But he just showed us this quick 30 second news clip and then turned it off and asked the class "what are the implications of this video?". And of course, the class stayed silent. We didnt know or understood the question. A professional teacher would readjust the question or rephrase it. But he just kept asking as if that'd make it clearer. So we started explaining we dont understand. Implication in terms of what? The news? The crime itself? was there something between the lines we should have seen. remember, just 6 months prior to that, most of us were in high school raising our hands to go to the bathroom.
He then addresses the class and "you guys got NOTHING from the video?" and a student clarified "we don't understand WHAT part of the video do you want to talk about?".
And the teacher replies "you guys are f'in ridiculous. Come back next week" and dismissed the class. So yea, that was my intro to college lol. I ended up not going back. Not because of that experience. But that experience sure went into the "factors" column as to why I didnt feel I was ready for school.
You didn't do anything wrong. The dude was an asshole and the students were correct. I worked in financial analytics, and if you ask someone at a firm to analyze a company it's give and take, right? If I just sat down and said, "APPLE, APPLE, APPLE. TELL ME ABOUT APPLE," that would get me fired. So, he was just a lunatic. I hope your life went well after that shitty experience.
So you showed that you can't get any information from a source, unless there is an authority chewing out that information and putting that into your mouth.
Hence, you have ZERO critical thinking. Hell, you have negative critical thinking because without said authority, instead of trying to make you brain think, you start searching for the validated opinion from the outside.
And it's criminal justice - the area when having critical thinking literally saves or ruins lives.

Mark Talbert, the professor in this video, passed away on Oct. 19, 2015, at the age of 55. Although many remember him for this one outburst, we should not judge a man based on such singular, rather meaningless, moments. There was much more to his life, more that deserves to be remembered. RIP

My 4th grade tea her did this to me once. I had severe epilepsy and my medication was high dosage, 3 1000mg pills daily, and drowsiness and dizziness was a side effect. She told the class I was making up excuses. As a young adult, I had severe social anxiety and it made college extremely difficult.

i was in band one and someone kept clicking their tongue and the band instructor went off on the student who kept doing it. few seconds later kid did it again. i dont remember exactly what happened then, and i know thats the good part.. probably got his tuba taken away from the band instructor for the day or something.

My teacher either just ignores it or just say 'oh not that yawn' and continued with what they're doing. Last year some random classmate was stretching and *actually* was a overly loud yawn that time. The teacher didnt went angry and only said "what the heck was that?" and starts laughing
I dont blame the man for feeling that way. Probably had to do so for so long. He probably had a bad day. This professor cares about his students education so i can see why he bursted out. Btw he passed away in 2015. May he rest in peace.
