Tell me about it! The other day, I've got my headphones on, deep in the audio editing, and thinking to myself, "Sheesh ... is this guy going to make it?" :~)
I listen to these like a radio. I'm usually too busy to sit around for a whole hour to actually watch the video, but I play it in the background as I'm working. David's videos are always so calming yet interesting to listen to.
Perhaps the world doesn't know or care that you're here, but we sure as heck do. What a bright spot you and your storytelling and your work are in our lives! Very grateful to still have you around.
I did the same in 2011. My dad had a brain tumor, was operated, but developed some nasty side effects. He spend his last weeks in a hospice and I was there with him. Fed him, washed him and other stuff. That experience even led me to my next job, I am a geriatric nurse for almost 11 years now. Thanks, I always miss the streams due to the time difference. I am a Patreon supporter for a few years now.
I don’t know anyone else who could tell a story like this the way you do. Thank you for being so transparent with your audience, it’s never taken for granted.
Our grandma had the eye treatment lense replacement thing, they had it videotaped and the whole family watched it. So I can understand the excitement about the operation... And the comeback about the stretching was hilarious!
We got two David Bull videos more than an hour long in just a few weeks time?!?! How incredibly lucky are we?! And now is Dave sharing some very personal stuff with us?! We love you David! Everyone here would gladly listen to you talk for hours on end
David I’m sorry you experienced complications but am so glad things resolved. I myself had a similar experience (less the complications) with kidney cancer earlier this year. In fact, just last week I had my first follow-up imaging and it appears the surgery was a success. Here’s to good health for us both!
David, you're so blessed to have had (and still have, in the case of your mother) parents with long lives. Both of mine died in their sixties, and I've been an orphan at 44 for the better part of a decade. You don't realize how much your parents mean to you until they're gone.
Dave is an incredible story teller and his memory of details is not a coincedence, he is present in the moment and contemplates on every aspect of life. I think it's rare for a person to be analytical and at the same time be a do-er. His passion is emphatic and infectious. Thank you Dave for everything.
Just finished the meanings of life and was thinking it would be great if there was another story video to listen to while working. Refreshed my feed and lo and behold, another one. Great coincidence
cool。 I just met Dave in person a day ago, and I can confirm he is as real in person as he appears. a living legend, although having been influenced culturally by living in Japan for decades, he would never ever say about himself
@@denisspengel3785 i also got to meet him this summer. went in expecting to say that thanks and i'm a fan, ended up having a conversation for over an hour about a whole multitude of things. what a wonderful experience
I must say, Ive been watching David now for about 5 years. Every single time a new video comes out, I have to watch it. David keep kicking! With all the things going on in the world right now, we need all the "lights" we can get. You happen to be one of them for me and im sure several others.
Couldn't watch this video Dave. Around the 9 min mark when you said you had a great time helping your dad die I teared up and couldn't end the watch. I'm sure it was a wonderful video, as always, and maybe I'll get back to it in a few weeks, or months. But heavy stuff! Thanks for the video.
Perhaps you won’t see this comment but I’ll say it anyways. We came into the shop in April and you were there. We had a nice conversation before buying prints. Oddly enough we chatted about health testing and cancer as well as art. We didn’t know you had suffered with cancer but now our chat makes more sense to me. We hope you have many more years of print making, family time and teaching your skills to others. Your work is wonderful and you are appreciated
Thank you for sharing this, Dave. Your optimism for life is so inspiring. We are all glad you are healthy! RUclips’s algorithm picked a great video and great artists to promote that day!
Mr Bull, not only will you never be 'the guy with cancer', but you will always be a combination or all of 'the star', 'the coolest guy', 'I learn so much from this guy' and 'What a wise guy' to me!
Hi again Dave. It was such a privilege to meet you today, and one of the highlights of our trip. Thankyou for taking the time to stop and chat, You could not have been more welcoming. Domo arigatou gozaimasu.
Man, can't believe it's already half a decade since I first discovered Dave and Mokuhankan through "Remembering A Carver", and the video itself is 2 years away from reaching its 10th anniversary. A lot of people have said it, but I still feel like Dave's natural skills in storytelling deserve more appreciation. Whether it's an edited essay video of Dave talking about the history and process of making Japanese woodblock prints, or a live stream where he just continuously talks in front of his carving table, I always find his stories endearing to listen to.
I first learned about your channel on an ASMR playlist where one of your David's Choice videos were curated. I had no idea what woodblock prints were, but in the video you said something to the effect of "people are always so surprised to hear that it's carved," and I actually shouted at the screen: "What!? It's fucking carved!?" I took off to your channel to see further how this process worked and found it very satisfying to watch. I've been hooked ever since.
What an amazing man you are…thank you so much for sharing your story…wishing you good health and happiness from now on…best wishes from Co.Monaghan, Ireland.
I've been watching for some years and am a very proud owner of your version of the Great Wave. Thank you for your story. It made me think of my parents and this crazy succession of experiences that we call life. Like you, most of my parents and grandparents generation were smokers. Despite that some of them lived to their 90s but smoking took its toll. As an aside, I would say (in my experience) a Doctor not being able to find a vein isn't necessarily indicative of his/her surgical skill, but I also know that the quality of medical treatment can vary. I can only imagine the pain you experienced, but having had a kidney stone 30 years ago, I have an inkling of how much fun the kidneys can cause (I got a shot of morphine out of it). I think one of the reasons we're here is to bring order to chaos and you've done that and so much more. You've mastered your art and, it seems, popularised and reinvigorated it. God bless and good health to you
David, thank you for being willing to share the story about your father's passing. I lost my own Dad to cancer a couple years back and I would have given anything to have that time during his last few weeks to spend with him... Unfortunately, it all moved too quickly. This brought me joy to know your own experience was so much better. Thank you for sharing and thank you for doing what you do to preserve this art form. It all means a lot.
Glad you came through everything. I had a worrying diagnosis not long after the death of my mother in law. It turned out to be something that needs monitoring every six months for the rest of my life. I consider myself very lucky my GP ran an additional test when I visited with another issue.
I also saw the plane video…. Perhaps on a flight to or from Poland and US through Germany. It made a huge impact on me. It is one aspect that sent me back on my own journey as an artist. I haven’t seen any of your videos since. This year has been difficult and transformative, and I come across this video today. Thank you for sharing your story.
Very glad to hear you’re doing well and the cancer has been gone. We just had a small scare with my 83-yr-old mother who was found to have colon cancer during a colonoscopy. Thankfully, it was so new that it couldn’t even have been classified as Stage 1, so it was an easy fix when they took the polyp out at that moment. Other than needing to go every year for a colonoscopy for the rest of her life, my mom is doing fine and no issues. Cancer is a scary word and you summed it up so well. The sun was still shining, birds still chirping, but for your personal world, it rocked your foundations. The same for my family.
Thanks for sharing your history, it helped me a lot in a personal way. I have to thank you also for your channel, I appreciate so much viewing all the processes, the prints, all the love you show for your craft, and you speaking so gently from your bench. You can tell any type of history, I'll be gladly here listening. My only regret is to be from the other side of the world (Brazil). In the contrary, I'd visit Mokuhanga easily. Happy you're doing well, take good care of yourself.
interestingly enough, I met Dave just a recently having traveled outside the U.S. for the first time. the reality of visiting Mokuhankan in person exceeded my expectations. Hope you make it there one day!
@@denisspengel3785 Glad to hear about your experience there! Yes, it's far from me, but I have to plan a visit, for sure. Thanks for the encouragement!
I love this personal story of struggle and survival. It touched me deeply, especially since my best friend (who moved from Sweden to Japan years ago since he loved the culture and the country) passed away 4 years ago from cancer. In a strange but beautiful kind of way this story has made the exquisite Mokuhankan prints I bought soon after I had become a fan of your channel (soon after my friend passed away) come “full circle” for me ❤ In a selfish kind of way I’m glad you beat the cancer David 😉💪
I'd absolutely want to hear more of Dave if you're ok with sharing. Videos like this one, remembering a carver, the meaning of life one are really interesting to listen to.
Thank you for sharing your story Dave and taking the time you needed to process it all. I’m so glad you made a full recovery and hope that you continue carving, print making and video creating for many years to come! I’ve been watching your channel since 2013 and been a patreon for many years too and am very happy to see all the successes you’ve made! I hope to visit your shop and meet you in person one day, all the best from the UK! 🙏✨
A wonderfully told story - I am glad you're doing okay today! If it makes you feel any better, even in the USA many surgeons also are bad at placing IVs - the nurses are better! Not necessarily any indicator of surgical quality.
I'm so glad to hear that you fought and won. My father also recently went through bladder cancer. He's still waiting on the all clear but, fingers crossed things look promising.

i love your videos so much david, ive been watching since the month that remembering a carver video came up on my feed. thanks so much for sharing this, it's really enlightening to hear about!
I was actually living in Japan when your Remembering A Carver video popped off in 2017 and like many others discovered your channel and became a fan of your work. To this day I regret not being able to make a trip up to Tokyo to visit your shop happen before I left the country in 2018, although knowing now what I know about what you were going through at the time, perhaps it's best that one less person hassled you in person while you were going through it. Glad you pulled through and here's to many more years of being cancer-free, Dave!
Dear Dave, I don't you as the "guy who has cancer", I see you as the "guy who beat cancer". Also, you are kinda good at making youtube videos and running a business. All in all, pretty badass. Thank you for being the person you are and all the best to you. Lots of love from Germany
Dave, I’m glad to hear you are doing well. Thank you for all you’ve shared and for all the inspiration and enthusiasm for woodblock printing and the Japanese arts in general. You’ve made a difference for a lot of people, including myself. I don’t know about Japan, but in the US medical students and doctors in training (residents) do a lot if IV’s and usually get pretty good at it. After training, however, things like IV’s will frequently be done by nurses and other members of the team and rarely done by the physician so those skills can atrophy. It is not necessarily unusual for a doctor who is very skilled in their area of practice to have less than stellar IV skills. Also, great pronunciation of the medical terminology.
If a doctor is happy about finding cancer, it always means that it’s got caught super early and they can get rid of it with a high success rate. Very funny reaction though XD
There is another aspect to this that I could have included in the retelling. I had met her a week earlier when I first presented at that hospital (when they took blood/urine samples and asked me to come back in a week). In our initial 'interview' she told me that she had studied for a year over in Britain. So I think part of this was that she - being familiar how foreigners feel about these things - knew that I would want 'the straight truth', with no beating around the bush ...
being somewhat familiar with the difference between Asian and American culture, I can confirm there is a way of speaking much more “directly’ in Asian culture. My take on it is that her reaction was her excitement was related to catching it early enough to really do something about it
I'm not sure what to write. As someone who stumbled upon your video, not having ever heard of woodblock printmaking, nor thinking I would ever be interested in the subject, I found myself watching every video you put out because of your energy, and the fun you seem to have doing the thing you love doing. I can't speak for everyone, but the main thing that drew me in, was your ability to speak with such infectious passion about, well, everything. Even this video. I'm so glad you beat cancer. I'm sorry you went through this. I hope that you on producing more videos for years and years to come. Thank you Mr Bull.

Thank you Dave for sharing this story! Your experience was quite the odyssey. I'm glad that things worked out for the better for you and your family.
Thank you for this story. It was uplifting.
It's so nice to see you doing well David!
This is legitimately my favorite channel on RUclips, David.
Watched this while working and I'm very grateful you're okay and uploaded!
My take on it is that her reaction was her excitement was related to catching it early enough to really do something about it
Love your vibe Dave. Great watching people at the top of their craft
Such a lovely story David, thank you for sharing!
Thank you Mr Bull.
well said

Beautiful Tale, I could listen to you for hours!
I was lucky enough to visit Asakusa and Mokuhankan in August with my family. We met Dave and some of the other staff. Really, if you’re in the area, do visit. It’s fantastic
this is amazing. David, you are an incredible person. This supports the old tradition of story telling and how important it is to listen to your elders (don't be offended). Hope always the best to you David.
Great full for your insights into this having had some experience myself with a relative. You’re so right about getting checked out.
